Any of our European members see any evidence of the ash cloud from the volcano in Iceland ?

I was wondering that too. I've heard you can't see much from Great Britain, but what about Trolle in Denmark? It seems like it's going right through that area.

If by chance you are wondering why it's such a hazard to operate commercial aircraft is these conditions, the first is erosion of the cockpit windows, to where it is difficult to see out of them .
Second, is the volcanic ash has a high silica content, when the ash gets into the 'hot' section, or combustion area of the engine, the silica melts, and then a deposit of 'glass' gets on the parts and destroys the efficiency of the engine .
All of the rotating parts downstream of the combustion area, are airfoil shaped , and any deposits on them greatly reduce their capability to do their job .
Worst case scenario, the engine quits running, and in most cases, can't be re-started .
After a turbine engine ingests volcanic ash, it needs to be completely torn down, and all parts with a glass coating, must be replaced .

It's 10 am here in south east England. Beautiful blue sky. The north wind (coming from Iceland) has stopped after blowing for a week or so. Probably means the ash cloud is stopped overhead now! Some ash has fallen to ground in Shetland Islands, far to the north, off Scotland. It's a very fine grey powder. Nothing here though. Of interest: news report that German and Netherlands airlines have both run experimental flights through the ash cloud. No results yet but obviously they did not crash! Maybe taking the engines apart?

Someone must be flying... My Motobins order just arrived via Royal Air Mail. No volcanic ash noted on the package or in the new wheel bearings. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
I did notice the faint scent of Earl Grey.

Any of our European members see any evidence of the ash cloud from the volcano in Iceland ?
We were going by plane to see our daughters and GRANDSON in Copenhagen Thursday evening through Sunday but due to the ash cloud we had to go by car instead.
Planes have been grounded since Thursday afternoon and are still grounded here in Denmark. The operators are getting quite restless demanding the airban to be lifted immidately as there is no real evidence that the cloud is a danger to airtraffic.

It seems weird no planes in the sky i live near the flight paths for Manchester and Leeds.We have been treated to some spectacular sunsets though.
There were some pictures of a military jet engine on the news tonight that was full of "Glass" the pilot was lucky to get it down safely after his test flight.

I have had a my cousin as a house guest for the last week from Paris. Just today she got Airfrance to fly her to Barcelona Spain. Tomorrow she is hoping on a connecting flight but has a back up plan to take the train.
On day one I tried to get her a seat on a ship across the Atlantic but she nixed it as her expense account wasn't that strong.
Amazing what God can do with ONE little volcano....
BTW - the Georgia riding weather this last week or so has been fabulous!!!!!

Got up this morning and the windows are covered with fine grey ash...told the wife im not cleaning them untill the eruption is over...(any excuse)

Lou, after this ash episode is over, you need to take a look at the air filters on any vehicle that was operated during that time .
They can get clogged quite fast, even with a small amount of ash present in the air .
I worked with a mechanic, that lived about 100 miles (160 km) downwind from Mt St Helens, during it's eruption in 1980, air filters, and excessive brake wear were the two biggest problems he had at that time .
Looks like the ash plume is making it's way towards Greenland, and the Atlantic provinces of Canada .

Why is it that "the Icelandic volcano" is referred to as such by the BBC, CNN etc. Why don't they call it by it's name? - Perhaps Trolle could help them with the pronunciation?

I've heard many BBC reporters tripping over their tongues on it - virtually no one whose primary language is english seems capable of it, it seems.
I know that I can't pronounce it correctly!

Icelandic is a very tricky language unless you were born to it. My brother and his wife had an icelandic girl stay with them through the student exchange program. They even went there to visit once and met her family. No way they could even say their names, so they had to use nicknames. :o
I heard one radio announcer say the volcano name right. It didn't stick in my brain though.

The Icelanders have a strange combination of front tongue 'r' and a soft 'd' sounding almost but not quite like the English 'th' sound. This combination is very difficult to pronounce for a Dane who uses back tongue 'r' and a hard 'd' and I think that English speaking people experiences the same difficulties. But the name means something like "the vulcan beneath the glacier"
