Hi, gang. Newby here, with an '84. Black, 69,000 on the clock. I picked it up two years ago. I find that now that I have some grey hair (okay, a lot of grey. SO WHAT?!?), I don't need 120 HP and 0-60 in .7 nanoseconds, so the R65 suited my new and less-rushed mood. Last year, didn't have much chance to ride it last year, but been using it to commute 3 days a week lately.

I'm not new to bikes, or things mechanical. I know my way around an engine compartment well enough to swap out the cam belts in my SUV without extra parts left over, or breaking non-broken parts. In fact, restoring a CB400F and a '74 Porsche 911 Carrera right now. (Yeah, like I have time for either of those. They sit in the garage glaring at me...)

Anyway, I just picked up a new OEM disk for the R65, and find that I have bought what I am told is a "Shallow Dish" disk, and the bike has on it a "Deep Dish" disk.

Can anyone shed some light on why there are two dishes, and what years they were for? Or were they different models?? I looked on the microfiches available on line and the part number seemed to be right, but apparently something (either me, the microfishe or my understanding) was wrong.

Greasy Marcus,  Who told you it was the wrong disc? BMW tech or neighborhood know-it-all? Does the new disc match what you have on the '84? What fiche were you looking at? We may need some additional info to assist you.  Pics?

In the meantime, here's a front end photo of my 1981 R65.

I just went back and figured out I bought the wrong disk even though it was advertised as the correct one.

My mistake.

Did you maybe get the "wrong side" rotor?  I've never looked at them that closely...

No, the part numbers are wrong according to Real OEM. They list the dual setups too, and those use the same part # as the single. Of which my new one isn't.

Grease, my parts book shows part number 34 11 1 236 005.  Which part number did you get?

Twin shock R65s have a deep disc, whilst the rest of the range of the period (R100, R80, RS, RT, etc) have shallow discs.  The exception to the rules are the ST and GS bikes.

The R65/45, R**GS and R**ST all have a front hub that is slimmer than that fitted to the other bikes in the range - even with brembos fitted.  

This is why it is difficult to get spoked wheels to fit an R65 - you have to often have to source a front hub from either the GS or ST to do it.

Although you could specify spoked wheels for an R65 in most countries, very few people did - certainly in Europe and North America.  This makes R65 with spoke wheels very rare indeed.  You need to count the ribs on the front hub of a spoked wheel. Or compare the thickness of the 18 and 19 inch front snowflake.

Confused?

I believe when the Mono's came along everyone when to the shallow dish variety, except the GS of course.  I believe the ST had been discontinued by then.

The twin shock R65s had the deep disk - most other airheads had the shallow ones so you will be limited to R65 disks. I actually bought an entire front wheel off ebay to get the propper carrier. (price was right)
BTW - left and right side disks are identical.
There are vendors who will mount new disks on your carrier. It does not seem possible to grind the OEM disk - not enough thickness. Beware if you buy a used disk.
Look at the casting number on the inside of the disk carrier - sometimes that is better than going with the listed stock number.
Also - if you are fitting a second Brembo, I found that there is a Ducati caliper that is a perfect match. Unfortunately I don't have model numbers - I took a risk and bought it off ebay based upon the spacing of the bolt holes which matched. (of course I also bought one where the spacing matched but was threaded for the bolts rather than straight through)

HI Greasespot,

I assume you have Brembo calipers.  You can get better quality pads from www.cyclebrakes.com.  I like the Kevlar pads from Galferas [sic].  They work well dry and don't fad and don't wear out the discs as quickly as the HH sintered pads do.

You can get really good stopping rotors from EBC but the carriers wear out and the rotors rattle A LOT!  EBC doesn't make larger plugs to account for the increased clearence.  Too bad because at 40,000 miles the rotors have not even worn a bit!!   >:(

The last three digits are different. Mine is 566. I don't know how I made that mistake; the Real OEM fiche lists only the 005. Oh well. Luckily, lots of airheads take this disk, so I ought to be able to move it...

OK, it appears to be for a /7 (like R100/7 and maybe a /6).
