Title: Things to do in California
Post by: Lucky_Lou on July 23, 2009, 04:38:06 PM
My son in-law is going to be working in Palmdale for a couple of months on a defence contract i would tell you who he works for but then i would have to kill you.....apart from a scenic tour of area 51 is there anything of interest in the area. He,s not a biker but will have transport and directions to any good golf courses would probably be appreciated ....ta

Let me take a wild guess, Lockheed 'Skunkworks" .

Last time I was out there I did a tour of Death Valley.

Cant remember which 'area' I was visiting, but one bombing range is just like another.

Hey, TwoGun... Perhaps you might suggest he "knock up" Paris Hilton. She seems to know all the local A-list hangouts in LaLa Land.    Monte ;)

Since California is technically bankrupt advise him that local law enforcement will likely be in "revenue generation mode" and he should behave himself!  ;)

I've only been to CA twice (Southern CA) and my laid-back semi-redneck style didn't seem to fit in very well so I just hung out at the various "nerd stores" around Irvine...  There are/were a lot of extremely neat electronic surplus joints in the area - too bad I was flying commercial...  :-/

Bob roller is on the money, is there a golf course in death valley?......ill warn him about the revenue gatherers.....Monte i don't think my daughter would appreciate it if i told him Paris Hilton's phone number i rang her myself but got some guy called Howard Johnson?? sounds like it will be all work and no play but i can tell you there's no expense being spared on this trip so god only knows what he,s working on this time.

I get it, Lou!  California... Arnold "The Governator"... True Lies... Harrier... and let's not forget Jamie Lee Curtis!

You do know what's going to happen, Lou, what with the California economy being in the crapper. Your son will bring home a Hollywood Cowboy souvenir just for you... in the form of an IOU ;D

I wonder if they'll allow tickets to be paid with IOUs?

Interesting note... On CraigsList, some peeps are offering to buy the IOU's given to Californians; at a deep discount off face value. Sorta reminds me of the bastids that do a similar business from cheap strip malls just outside the main gate of most military installations. Somebody get a rope!

There is a resort in Furnace Creek,CA, that's within the Death Valley National Park,  with a golf course, lowest golf course in the world, -214 ft. elevation .

http://furnacecreekresort.com/

I've stayed there a few times in the cooler fall time frame .

The project probably has an association with Project Aurora, rumored to be the next 'Black Project' to come out of the Lockheed Skunkworks .

There's been a few sightings of a 'rope with knots' type of 'contrail' (condensation trail, from jet exhaust) here in the southwestern US in the last 10 years or so, most reports, is that it is a hypersonic aircraft with an unconventional jet power-plant loosely based on a pulse jet engine .

If he does happen to visit the Death Valley area in the next month or two, I can't over emphasize that the heat is a killer in that area, it takes no prisoners, right now it's averaging 120-125 F. (49-52 C.) for daytime highs .

During his first tour of scenic Sadr City in 2004, son Zach had a small thermometer clipped to his combat harness. He told me that during patrols in alley-sized streets during the summer months, he saw temps as you mentioned. Harsh, as the troops were dressed in full battle rattle.

Now, out of respect for our Soldiers, I no longer complain about the heat. I just want them home safely after their tours.

Monte

PS: Might try Bonneville. It's a short hop and should have balmy temps by comparison.  ::)

Bonneville salt flats in Utah are about 620 miles from Palmdale,CA., and about 430 miles from Death Valley,CA., a bit of a drive .

The annual 'speed week' there, should be getting underway in about a week or two .

Anything of interest in Palmdale???  LOL!!!  Being as I lived up the street in California City, I can tell ya, there ain't much. I don't know squat didly about golfing, but there is a course in Cal City and a couple in Tehachapi. Might even be a couple in Palmdale/Lancaster.

There is nature stuff at the Poppy reserve.  They aren't in bloom this time of year, but its still open:

http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=627

If he's into airplanes he can take a glider ride or go parachuting Cal City and Tehachapi and Mojave.  Burt Rutan's shop is at Mojave and there is also the aircraft 'Boneyard' there as well.

There are numerous places to go hiking: Red Rock Canyon SP, about an hour north and Devils Punchbowl, just south east.

http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=631
http://www.devils-punchbowl.com/

Death Valley is nice, but its gonna be miserable hot this time of year, as someone has already pointed out.

There is Six Flags Magic Mountain over in Valencia (take Hwy 14 east to I-5 then north a few miles)

Nice scenic drive over Angeles Forest Highway towards Pasadena, where he can take in the Norton Simon and a couple of other neato museums and a boatload of nice restaurants.  Then take Angeles Crest Highway to Wrightwood and then the Pearblossom Hwy back to Palmdale.

Speaking of black projects, I was relaxing in my backyard one night and noticed a set of lights moving at a high rate of speed north-eastbound from Edwards AFB.  All of a sudden the lights just stopped, and then went 'up' 90 degrees from the direction they were headed in.  Next day I asked a couple of AF pilots I knew, they wanted to know why I was outside at 3 am.  Hmmm..never told them what time I was out there.   :-X

Contact established.

Melena is just back from the Autumn Beemer Bash in Quincy Calif.  She says it was "another adventure". Her partner's ride (an 1980 R100???) died en-route in 100'f weather with a possible seized cylinder.  Her R65 was running flawlessly. So they had to get larger bike hauled off.  Apparently they put both bikes in a U-haul and went to the rally anyway.

She says she will post up when she gets some rest from the weekend.  So all is (phew) well in California.

Oh no I didn't realize I'd made you guys worry.  I'll be better.  Just been a busy "summer" (if you can call it that).

Thanks for the call Bill.  I sure appreciated it.  You got my story spot on.   :D  What a weekend!    [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

I'll tell more later.  It's been a busy day and I'm still trying to catch up with myself from a long weekend.
