I'm replacing the ancient (ME 33 Laser; made in Germany) Metzlers on my '80 and am considering all options.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

i just put on bridgestone spitfire tires 100/90 front and 110/90 rear on my bike and i love the road holding ability of the tires. and there pretty good with rain grooves in the freeway too. note i have very limited bike tire experience. but I've seen them recommended else where for our older bikes hope this helps

You need to decide for yourself what tire best suits your needs as everybody rides differently and is after different things. If you ask the collective for suggestions you need to describe your riding style and what you expect from a tire.
This is one of the few forums that will tolerate a tire thread (go start a tire thread over at boxerworks and see what happens...), but if they get out of hand I move them to the "Off-Topic" section.

I've had Metzelers on the R65 since '87 or '88, and they are a good tire, but don't feel quite right in wet conditions, but with living in Phoenix that's not much of a problem. The tires need to warm up before you ask too much of them, as I ride all year long, temps in the 30's F. will give you a real 'slick' tire for a couple of miles. Average mileage for the Lasertec's are about 8-9,000 miles for a rear and 12-13,000 miles for a front. At least that has been my experience.

Thanks for the info; I ride 9-10 months a year and live in the northeast.
I avoid rain when I can but it rains alot in the fall and I need to be ready.
Lots of great twisty mountain roads in our area and I'm happy at 65 mph on the parkways.

hey everyone,
I haven't been back to this site in some time, and the link nhmaf gives above doesn't seem to work anymore. I also seem to have trouble finding this information by doing a search on the word "tire". Can anyone else find this forum thread easily?
Also, I'm pondering putting some tube-type tires on my 81 r65, because the last tires (tubeless) I put on were absolutely a bear to get on, and there would be no way for me to fix a flat on the roadside because the bead would be too hard to deal with. Luckily I didn't have a flat with these tires. Am I correct in presuming that the tube-type tires' beads are easier to deal with?

I like Bridgestone BT45 s. Good in the wet and the dry. Getting about 7500k from the rear, high speed mway cruising and abrasive mountain road scratching. Gotta be a 100/90 up front cos the sizes are a bit skinny compared with other manufacturers tyres. If the wheels and tyres are nice and warm they can be fitted more easily. A good lube is very helpful too.

So...I tried the search as well and it looks like the search is only working on the new threads since the upgrade? Yes, I went to advanced search and changed the time frame to all posts instead of just a week. It only returned 9 finds, even with a limit of 15 - all of which were this particular thread.
Must be another glitch with the move?

I've got Kenda - front 90/90 & rear 110/90 but I need a new rear tyre from was put on by previous owner about 1000km ago.
Do I like them? ....... dunno, maybe a new rear will make the bike feel better!

I don't think they make "tube-type" tires for motorcycles, anymore.
We just put tubes in our tubeless tires.
When you are trying to get the last bead over the rim, go to the opposite side of the wheel, grab the tire and squeeze the two beads together and shove them as deep as you can into the channel that runs around the center of the wheel. That will give you a little more room on the other side, where you are trying to get the bead over.

Love the Michelin Macadams. 4.00H18 rear I have a two sizes larger 110/90H18 rear tire on the front (turned around). This tire is NLA from Michelin so watch the date stamp on the side. Avon Roadriders also work well.
