Starter has begun to make a terrible whine on the disengage.
I have heard this noise before on auto starters when they have dificulty disengaging.
Must I remove the starter to clean & lube it to try and remedy this?

Yeah, I think you'll need to pull it to do anything about it. Here's a link to a good writeup. Give me a call if you need a hand, I'm off all week. I'm half considering riding the R65 to Colorado to visit a friend, but I've still got lots of Audi wrenching to get done before winter so that may not happen.

Hopefully just a thorough clean and lube will have your bendix, err, "bendixing" again.
Somewhere I had found another thread on this sort of repair, but the one from the tractor link is good.
