I've been using a product called Torque Seal, comes in a half ounce tube. You squeeze the gel in a line across the fastener and the surrounding area . After about an hour the gel hardens, if the fastener loosens up on it's own, or is tampered with, the material breaks off giving you an indication that you need to check the tightness of the item.

Uh, it's "Ya-picked-a-fine-time-to-leave-ME-loose-wheeeeeel"  Don't you ever listen to ol' Goober Waltrip when he's trying to sing?  ;D

But, seriously, after about 17k I have never had this happen and when I have had occasion to have my rear wheel off they were always super tight.  They have a cone-shaped shoulder and I would think they would have to be pretty loose to start with for them to loosen on their own.  Me thinks Veg either pi$$ed somebody off ar some punks had too much time on their hands...
