Title: What a show!!
Post by: SCJJR65 on March 05, 2008, 06:13:12 AM
For my birthday last month, my wife Pattimarie surprised me by getting us tickets to see the Blue Man Group, who is courrently on their "How to be a Megastar" tour across the US.  I had been woanting to see BMG for years ever since I saw a video of one of their stage shows, but it seemed like they were always playing in Vegas or LA, or NYC.  Well, I got my big chance to see them last night, and I have to say it was perhaps the wildest and most fun "concert" I have ever been to!

They had an eight piece backup band that was as good as any rock band I've heard, but the "percussion" is what it's all about with the BMG.  The things and objects they could "play" and the sounds they got out of them, in perfect rhythm and tune with the music, was nothing short of incredible!  They also had three large screens in back of the stage that showed some really funny and funky videos that accompanied the music generated by BMG.  And they got a great deal of "audience participation" as well!

It was the fastest (and most fun) two hours I think I've spent in the last 10 years!  Folks, if you ever hear of the Blue Man Group appearing anywhere near where you live, I highly recommend dropping the bucks for a ticket and experience these three guys.  Well worth the time and money!

Yes, they are a very entertaining experience !   They have pretty much set up permanent residence at one of the smaller
theaters in Boston, MA and perform there year-round.  My wife and I have gone at least 2X-3X and have also taken my nephews to see the show as well.

If you like interesting, off the wall, percussive music shows like this, I would highly recommend that you go to see the production/show called "STOMP!"
which is very, very entertaining and which usually has a finale of several percussionists swinging from bungee harnesses and playing an entire 4 meter
tall "wall" of percussion instruments, and well, er, "junk"..  "STOMP" is a much more limited engagement sort of thing, but keep your eyes open for it...

Stomp originated in Oz, and my wife and I went to see it about 10 years ago......incredible.
Watching half a dozen people on stage with 9" angle grinders creating at the same time pyrotechnics and rhythm was spellbinding.  And the upside down stomp/tapdance routine suspended in industrial fall restraint harnesses defied gravity. However, the use of everyday objects, dustbin lids etc, to create something great to listen to rather than just a cacophony of noise was amazing.
