Title: Is It Just Me ......
Post by: Bob_Roller on February 12, 2008, 06:37:01 PM
Is it just me, or is it getting more difficult to try to repair something these days, instead of having to replace it ?????

I did some maintenance on my pool filter today, and I found a cut o-ring on a bleeder valve on the filter housing.

Now this is a 3/8 th's inch diameter o-ring, not exactly what you would call a low use un-obtainable type part, but after 'visiting' three pool supply stores, I had to go to NAPA auto parts to get a stinking 35 cent o-ring !!!!!!

All of the pool supply stores wanted to sell me a $12 bleeder assembly instead !!!!!

There, I feel better now, that I vented about this !!!!

I'll go take my medication now .

Of course they DON'T want you to repair it.  They might make 15 cents on an O-ring but probably about 8 bucks on the valve..

Yup, that is it exactly - try going to an automotive store now a days and asking for parts for a (name any year) distributor (other than maybe a cap)
or alternator or water pump gasket or any of the 'normal' things that you used to be able to repair yourself - now it is the standard procedure to just pitch the
old one and buy a remanufactured one from them - alot more profit margin and reduces the volume of inventory they have to carry...
