Title: Windshields to be or not to be?
Post by: fishntxflats on May 19, 2007, 09:07:10 PM
I have always been against the look of a windshield on a motorcycle
I have been fighting the Gulf coast winds down in south Texas for a while
now.  It averages 10 to 30 knots making your ride almost a circuit experience,
knee dragging on the interstate and highways...  O.K. well maybe that's a little
exaggerated but it's dog gone windy...so I broke down and decided to go against
the total sport/stock look, and went on a MAD internet/ebay hunt...WHOA those
pilschers y'all have are expeennnnsssivee!!!!
Had to go a little more economical and I'm happy to say that Parabellum
(I know cheap advertising :P ) makes a wind shield that fits over the R65LS fairing...
and to boot I don't have to drill any holes depreciating the value ...I digress...
I got it in the mail yesterday, put it on, my daughter says Dad, It looks O.K. I gotta go
(I think teens must say that a lot), my son said "Cool!!! can I go for a ride with you Dad?
My wife said it looks like a cop motorcycle... Me I said cool bring on the wind and get
on boy let's go for a short ride around the block.
You may ask why did he post it here...I am mechanically inclined enough I usually don't
read the instructions...Let me tell you, that thing rattled like a big dog with a collar, I forgot
tighten the side bolts, which I would have known if I had read the instructions first... ;D

I don't think windshields/fairings do anything for the looks of my bike(s), which is one of the main reasons why the Bimbo lost the Plischler she had on when I bought her, (there was also the matter of of me stuffing her at 60mph) but I've got to say that having got used to hiding behind a big barn door of a fairing on the Bimbo's replacement, it is rather nice place to be when its pissing down!

Working' on the pics thing. :o, The ride is awesome I can cruise with out the hang on affect, I
really am becoming accustomed to the look, no burble affect behind a semi, had to test that
out.   When passing on a 2 lane you get a little push, but that's normal. I ordered the 18 inch one,
the 24 just looked too big. My helmet is out with the 18, recommend the 24 If you want total
coverage, but It's solid since I tightened the screws...Lots of Laughs.  I like the econ way
you went MrRidin, did you make yours?

Ouch indeed, Rich! JC Whitey brought me a windshield just like yours today, on the recommendation of our Moderator SCJohn J. I do believe this is the same Maier shield that's on Moderator Rob's '79 too, so there must be something to 'em.
I hope to have joined the well-shielded myself by tomorrow morning... [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Bugs! Bloody bugs!
Thank god my RT's black because its got a good load of ex-bugs all over it, and if they stood out enough to notice I'd have to clean it :)

Ps... an old joke but brings a smile to my face

I like mine O.K....  It seems to generate a lot of wind noise.  I may try mounting it at a more inclined angle next time I put it on (if there is a next time).
I DID have to make home-made supports for my windshield, because of my low bars.
I also had to buy a 2nd dash panel so I could cut it up and allow clearance to the bars for the clamps.

There are a few more pictures on the link.

i need to try one with a large windsheild. i tried that givi on my kz this spring. it looked nice and keep alot of the wind off me, but the wind noise! i took it off because it i was really thinking about wearing ear plugs because it was so loud from wind noise. maybe when the dealer has a tour type there for me to try i can see why you all like windsheilds. right now i say i dont like windsheilds.

thang funny about the bug joke. hit a dragon fly this last saturday that snapped my head back when it hit me in the chin. glad i was wearing my full face helmet.

Jon - I wear earplugs everytime I get on the bike.  I'm saving my hearing for music!

My only regret is that I didn't start wearing them when I began riding.

Take a look at my latest thought about how to control the loud buffeting caused by a windshield...Wunderlich on the F650GS. the idea came from the eye shields on bench grinders except my shields move back and forth like a door amd swing on the mirror stalks. When they are pulled back facing me and are directing the most wind to my chest, the sound is the quietest...possibly a venturi effect on the wind makes it smoother and thus quieter. So far I am pleased and my MI friend with the hannigan says it's the quietest bike he has ridden yet. He has a 90/6.  It is my opinion that the closer the windshield the better and quieter it is..thus the Parabellum is like a barndoor and works great except you hit your helmet on it as it sits pretty close to one's head.

Can't get a pic to work sorry.

My experiment started when I attached wool tufts to my new windshield to see what was going on with the wind as it was very noisy. The top wind tufts blew back and tucked in behind the windshield and never moved from there.  The side tufts blew all over the place and indicated great turbulence.  So if I placed my hand upright near the mirror stalks I noticed a decrease in buffeting noise. The Parabellum came to mind as it sits close to the rider. The partial wind wings seem an ideal compromise and have the added bomus of being able to direct wind right at the rider to keep cool but keep things fairly quiet or close off the rider from rain by creating a protective box into which I can crouch and "hide".

Make sure that you can stand up on the pegs without smacking the windshield with your (hopefully!) face shield.  With my quiet Windjammer it's a near miss, and I'm not very comfortable doing it.
