Title: Chance Meeting
Post by: Bob_Roller on May 01, 2007, 12:22:51 PM
On my way home from work yesterday, and at a traffic light about 1.5 miles from home, a driver in a silver Saturn cage asks me what kind of lights I have on my bike  ('02 R1150R), I tell him PIAA's and drive off. Well it turned out that it was MrRiden 82 R65LS in the cage. What are the odds of this happening!

About 1 in six and a half billion?  Maybe other factors enter in to lower those odds.

How did you know who it was, I mean, he didn't stop to talk to an oil head rider did he?  Are you outing him now?   ;D

[smiley=ROTFLMAO.gif]  I was wondering how you knew who it was too.  But there are only so many Beemer riders you might meet on a given day.  And this one is a known in the area.  It is a small world.

Just a week before last I was answering the question of someone from Tasmania about their R80RT on a British forum (BM Bikes). He mentioned he was coming over to Western Australia for a week (last week). I said we should meet, it was then he said he was coming for a Navy reunion. It was the same Navy reunion my (ex) Father in Law was going to, in fact I'd helped him get some photo's cleaned up on my computer and printed off for a display board he'd set up.
John came over and came round (among his hectic timetable) for coffee, and checked out my stable and project bike (what else do you do!!??). Turns out he served on the same ship as my Father in Law, and the guy he was staying with (who also came round) knew my F in L well but hadn't seen him for years. I think it's called six degrees of separation.
I've met people on these forums and set up friendships with them, as well as those I haven't met face to face (yet!!).

Ah yes.
Well I guess I best step up to the confessional and shamefully admit that It was I who flagged Bob down whilst in a "cage". I don't commute on my bike as I just don't have the Steele to brave all the folks driving P'up trucks while talkin' on cell phones & putting on make-up while swatting the kids in the back seat as they change lanes while putting in a C & W cd and dunking a doughnut in their coffee... ya all get the idea. But Bob, Wow here comes this blazing comet of lights down a desert road outshining the sun itself and I say to myself "gotta have those lights". So at the next light I begin to flail, wave and jabber at him (looky mo-sickle). Coolly (Clint Eastwood like) he acknowledges my manic display and says "PIAA". I later learned he just came off 3 days of double shifts. My hats off to ya Bob. your a tougher nut than I. but I'm now inspired to make the run to werk on the bike, just as soon as I service the rear wheel bearings and do the dreaded spline lube. Someday we need to meet up proper like and have a Cervesa.

The price of gas (and I really don't think it is going to come down like in the past) has me riding more often than ever.

Specially since my Civic bit the dust...:'(

New car looks nice, but sucks gas like mad.

The price of fuel  is a big factor of now I can't park my bike in the motorcycle parking area at work, until the graveyard shift goes home. The price of regular in El Centro, Ca. was $3.60 per gallon last week when I took my transmission to San Diego. I'm on a 4, 10 hour day work week, and riding the bike to work only uses 2 gallons a week. The price here in the Phoenix area is right at $3.00 per gallon. I think you're right Rob I don't think the cost is going to come down much in the future.

I'm self employed, but most of my current clients are over an hour's drive away.
I can't fit all my test equipment into my saddlebags, so I don't take a motorcycle
as often as I'd like to, though at least both our cars manage 30+mpg.   Maybe
it is time to start looking into getting a sidecar for the boxer.....

Yeah, I've been thinking of something really miserly for commuting.  The Honda Ruckus (http://mayhem-chaos.net/photoblog/images/honda_ruckus.jpg) has had my attention for a long time.  I don't know what kind of accessory watts it generates, though.  You see, I was thinking about sticking a 3rd wheel on it for winter...
(here's another pic! shhh!) (http://www.bikez.com/pictures/honda/2004/21025_0_1_2_ruckus_Image%20credits%20-%20Honda.jpg)

As long as it has plug for my vest!

Rob, I'd pay good money to see you on that thing, commuting to work in the dead of winter, chugging along and fully outfitted in your cold weather riding gear!!   ;D

In the state of Indiana, 49cc's does not have to be licensed and can be legally ridden on the street.

Whether you can get insurance or not, is a whole nuther question.

Might want at least 80cc just to keep out of trouble, anyway.

I gotta say I'm seeing more and more of these little scooters around.  I'd be scared, too!  Unless I got one with a little more power...
