Hey guys, time for a new mod! I bought this rear subframe a while back that i totally got gyped on. the guy said it was in fine order and everything, recieved it in the mail and its totally bent like it had been wrecked, tabs were broken off, a real case. anyway i kept it because i didn't want to sell anyone else a botched product. now i was looking at to the other day and i noticed that it was bent fom the end, to th eshock mounts. Long story short, i swapped framed to see if it fit and what it would look like and what do you know, "LIGHTBULB"! I figured that i could chop from the shock mounts to the back completely off, get taller shocks (yes i know, handling and all that, thank you) to make it sit higher or even weld up for a higher angle seat. Chop a fender to reach a little past the shocks and leave the whole rear exposed. i was even thinking about a monoshock conversion. What is the purpose of installing taller shocks?  As far as converting to a monoshock that would be a pretty tall order without a welder and good fabrication skills - in other words it sounds like a whole mess-o-work!  ;)  Jon P. built a single shock rear end on his previous project, maybe review it to see what was involved.

Wow!i like the look of that,how much taller are you thinking with the new shocks fitted?

the taller shocks would be to make the rear end look taller. and how tall depends on how far i can go without comprimising total safety and/or as far as the driveshaft will allow.

I'm gonna make a sound like that goat on the AFLAC commercial and loudly say Naah, Naah, Naah. Heres what you might consider. forgetabout the taller shocks. Nevermind the handling and such, they'll be too expensive. Heres where ya go. Get yourself down to the local motorcycle wrecking yard and search out the tail piece and seat body work from one of the modern super bikes. Haul your find home and now what ya can do is modify that boat anchor of a sub frame to fit a nicely up-swept modern tail piece. You'll probably need to do some heating, bending, welding and add a few tabs but for now just picture it. I think adding an up-swept rear section will give you the modern look your hunting for.

That almost sounds like a fairly rational and doable idea, Rich! :o  It's dangerous looking at something and picturing in your mind what it will look like finished!  That's how I wind up with all of these junkers I have to totally refurb!  ::)

@#!&!!!! i'm gonna have to put this one off for a month or two... I just picked up my friend's R100RS from Chicago on Sunday and I'm doing a few jobs on that, plus I'm working on this guy's RT up the street. Apparently people get impressed by the looks of my bike and assume i'm some sorta super mechanic, which i don't deny but..... I got a lot of things to learn how to do properly in a really short time.

SO! first things first, does anyone know how to change steering head bearings? I think i need a torch or heat gun or something to heat up the race right? Then onto wheel bearings, all seals, all fluids, filters, spline lube...i just feel bad for my friend, cuz i'm damn sure not doin it for free.
