I bought this machine for £10 handle would not turn, quick strip clean and lube..... jobs a gud un it will not only sow cloth but also soft leather , canvas etc period correct (1887) and perfect for a re-enactor.
In many ways it reminds me of our R65,s great build quality, parts freely availiable lots of tech help if needed.
Good therapy for my arm too.

We still have an old treadle Singer, although it's electric. My wife and kids still use it as a straight sewer, it only has single drawers each side, but we used to have one with 3 drawers per side.
My younger daughter is a dressmaker, and she has a commercial Singer overlocker from the early '70's. It's a serious machine, with a 1/3hp motor, and the overlocker itself would weigh as much as an Airhead engine....I can hardly lift it. She moves house a lot, and I dread having to do the singer overlocker. In some ways it's not as good as the cheap lightweight modern ones (like ours) as it has curved needles - but like the treadle singer does what it does really well.

The mechanism on the treadle machines is basically the same as this early hand wheel one, i cannot for the life if me figure out how the shuttle thead pick up works though..... and the gearing and cam on the bobbin winder is a work of art.

Not sure I'm liking that blue print dress you got on Lou and the french polish on the nails could be a problem down at Squires, re-inactment gone too far maybe?

A week on Thursday i am running a Poker tournement at our reenactment at Malvern... i will be on the "Ladies table" i do have the legs for it and all for a good cause (H4H) .

I'm pretty sure that BMW Motorrad used the Singer sewing machines as a prototype for their muffler systems. I can seldom tell the difference between the two. ;D
But seriously Lou, there is a website and forum devoted to the old Singer and White treadle operated machines. Can't recall it off hand, but you can probably find a schematic and operating manual. My Singer Featherweight dates back to the '20's and I use it for heavy duty cloth and leather. Good machines.

Just finished my first project with it, a pair of "modesty" screens for the back of the re-enactment tent to hide the portaloo...Diane is hoping to have an outfit finished for next weeks big event.
We are off on our annual round up at "Big Whiskey"(Malvern) a week under canvas Cowboying..... brilliant but obvious concessions for SWMBO ,anything for a quiet life, i will post some pictures (not of the loo) when i get back a week on Monday.

My wife has two old singers like that. One we bought in Florida when we were outfitting our new sail boat. We used it for canvas and sail repair. It worked great the whole 5 years we lived on the boat. An electric machine wasn't strong enough to sew layers of canvas together.

It's said that all sewing machines are actually Singer and that many parts are interchangeable. Because Singer's patents ran out years ago and nobody has ever come up with a better system. Is this true? It reminds me of Westinghouse train brakes, or rather, the Westinghouse "triple valve" which controls them. It goes back to the 1880s and is such a simple and elegant piece of engineering that it is still used today in only slightly modified form.

I think you may be right about Singer. My treadle machine is a New Williams and I always understood it to have been bought out by Singer. Most things seem interchangeable but I do have trouble finding the right bobbins for the shuttle. The bobbins I need have a hole on both ends of the bobbin plus a nipple on each end too to work in the bobbin winder properly. I luckily have the owner's manual. The machine was used by my grandfather in the early 1900's to sew upholstery and maybe coffin linings. He was an undertaker. The machine was out of whack when I was a teen but I spent time on it getting all the tensions right and it has performed well for 50 years now. I flunked sewing class but did sew up a splash cover for our 17 ft Grumman white water canoe. That treadle machine needle went through inner tubing, and about 4 layers of coated nylon with stiffener in it. The needle was bending but if one went really slowly, it did the job!
