Title: Calling all computer gurus...web hosting question.
Post by: msbuck on June 18, 2012, 11:55:36 AM
Well, I'm not sure if it's web hosting or not.  I'm a relative newbie at web design and maintenance ~ self taught mostly.  I designed and created a website for MotoMark1 (http://www.motomark1.com/).  Mark is going to start doing some radio advertising and we're dealing with the name of the site - using the digit 1 instead of spelling out one and giving that info out over the radio.

So they have suggested we buy the motomarkone.com domain and have that go directly to the correct site, motomark1.com.  I know how to buy the domain name (any suggestions for purchasing this?  He's been using GoDaddy, which I'm not necessarily a fan of, but that was his choice.)  Once I purchase the domain name, do I then need to purchase hosting and then set up a 301 redirect on the motomarkone.com?

I'm really not sure what I'm talking about and I'm sure we have some experts out there that can set me straight!   ::)

One thing about Godaddy.com is that they do make some of this fairly easy - you can go through them to buy and register the other name and have it auto-directed to your "correct" website - only takes a few clicks from your account page.   I have this sort of thing setup for my business site - it has been awhile since I set it up so I'm a little bit fuzzy on some specific details, but can review things and get back to you if necessary.   It was quite straightforward at the time..

Thanks guys.  I THINK I have it figured out, but not quite sure about the details in setting up the auto-direct part.  If I get stumped, I may ask for more guidance.  As long as I don't have to purchase hosting as well as the domain, I should be good to go.

All you have to do is set a DNS entry pointing that URL to the address of the other site...
