My computer terminal at work, has a plug for a headset .
There isn't one for speakers .
Anyone know if the common powered computer speakers will work on this outlet ?

headphone outlets tend to be lower volume, you don't want to blast your ears with as much as you put out into speakers.
but most powered speakers have a built in amplifier that will compensate for that.
You are not going to damage anything, so i would just plug them in and see how loud you can make it.
you may need to also adjust widows volume control, as well as the speakers volume control (if they have a separate control)

I do have volume control of the outlet .
My work area is 'semi-secure', unfortunately things tend to wander off and never come back, if left out, and not nailed down .
Just wanted something that I can lock up in my tool box .

I tend to subscribe to the theory of having usable but ugly/cheap looking equipment that no one would want to steal at work
- eg take a regular set of perfectly good speakers and drip some paint on them (water based if you want to clean them later. Then apply with a marker pen or similar (can also be cleaned off later if needed) something like "faulty", "reject", "warning" or what ever tickles the fancy.
It's not impossible but it is doubtful any petty theif will want to steal them then.
If you really want to make sure no one knicks them - make em sticky to touch.

At work we used to always have speakers that fitted into a 5.25 drive bay on the computer. (For those not computer literate a CD drive space)
They were screwed in, were powered by the PC, and had a volume control on the front AND cheap. They actually put out quite a loud clear sound.
I found some tonight on ebay at http://cgi.ebay.com/New-PC-Multimedia-Stereo-Case-Speaker-5-25-Drive-Bay-/250619323868?cmd=ViewItem&pt=PCA_Speakers&hash=item3a5a1365dc
with a picture so you can see them fitted to a PC.

Bob, The speakers will work fine. There is no difference between head phone and speaker out sockets on a computer. It's a line level output around 100 mVolts which is OK for headphones but needs amplified speakers.
It's rare for a normal computers (yours maybe a thin client or so called dumb terminal) not have additional standard 3.5 mm jack sockets at the back and the sound out is always coloured green.

I checked all over the case, and only found the jack for headset, and microphone, this computer is a no frills bottom of the line-up Dell .

Hi I am new to the forum and I would apply the same technique to my bike ('83 r65) since I live in Oakland I try to camouflage the appearance of my bike (actually by just never painting it) so it looks less desirable to punks! I would find 2 small cardboard boxes to put awesome speakers in, then cut speaker holes and tape securely to desk.

Bob, like Barry mentioned...the same jack will work w/both your headphones or computer speakers that have an 1/8" plug
