Title: Site Performance
Post by: suraklyn on May 02, 2009, 08:06:29 PM
I haven't really heard anything about the site's performance since we moved to the new host.  I'd just like to get an idea of how its working out compared to being on the old host.

The site seems to be working great from my perspective, only one extremely minor problem that I notice is that on occasion the page will move down to the bottom of the page for some strange reason.

+1 on this. It's a minor inconvenience but a bit of a pain when you go to the top two or three times and it keeps getting dragged to the bottom.

'Course, if I actually let it load properly first it doesn't do this... ::)

+1 on page jumping but usually only in pages displaying photos. A bit trickier to link to a specific thread but got it figured. Improved over all is my onion.

If it is on heavily pictured pages it's probably because it can't figure out where it's supposed to be while the pix are still loading in.

Can't really coment as I've only really used the new site.

Work fine for me.

Much better!  On the other host it would frequently have an error and I would not be able to even get on.  Have not had that problem at all.  So far everything has been working great.

I've never had any problem like the others are saying.  Although I did just have something strange happen when I clicked on a picture.  I know you can do that to see the picture better (new with the new software).  This time I accidentally clicked on a picture that was mine.  I couldn't get it to close and it showed some kind of error.  I do have the new MS Browser and it seemed to have something to do with that, I think.

Hi,

I load from China, the old site was possibly a bit slower, but certainly this site loads well here.

At home in Brisbane, both sites loaded very fast.

and, thanks for a great place on BM's too, very much appreciated.

I agree with the others, generally it is better.  The old site's pages would load a bit slower, but you wouldn't get the 'sliding to the bottom' behavior that this one does on the longer threads.   Overall it is more available, too - have only had 1 case where I tried repeatedly to connect and it was unavailable, where the old site would be unavailable more often.

I have noticed the jumping around thing too, now that it was mentioned.  I always felt it was a browser issue as (now that I am more observant) I have noticed this on other sites as well.  I dunno...

Works great, no issues of any kind.

Only one thing I miss from the old site - when the threads became long enough for multiple pages, you had a choice for each page or ALL.  No ALL choice here.  If I miss a day or two, I never know which page I need to start with.  With the ALL option - no worries!

I like the extra additions - Gallery, Wiki (although I'm still figuring that one out!)

And I haven't noticed the jumping to the bottom.  I have seen it adjust itself because of pictures, but I'm usually expecting that.

Great work, guys!  THANKS for keeping us up and running so smoothly!   [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

Aïda - if you just click on the title after you have gone through the General Category, you will get all of the pages starting from page 1...is this what you mean? Just note: this won't work if you just click on the topic heading if on the home page...

OK, OK - I said I was a tad impatient... :-[

Oh - and I'm yet to say a very big thank you for all the time and effort that has been put into making this new site a great visiting experience!

Cheers

Seems cool to me.  Thanks!

And yes, the page jumping around is due to photos loading in, I am almost certain of it, in my amateur ignorance.

Ok Justin...This fluke happened to me again today.  It's only happened maybe 3 or 4 times total, so it's very sporatic...  I know, I know, just like a mechanic, if you can't reproduce it, you can't fix it. ....

Anyway,  I came on the board today and ALL the 'lights' were flashing at me.  It thinks I haven't read ANY of the posts anymore...It's really weird.  Not a problem, but just thought I'd let you know about it.  I simply go into each category and click the link at the bottom that says 'Mark all as read." and I'm ok again for another good long while.   :-?

Figure that one out for me.   :P

That has happened to me a couple of time, as well.

It does that to me as well, except usually just one board/category.  I haven't the foggiest idea but next time I'm on the YaBB Support Forum site I'll see if I can find a reported bug that sounds familiar...

Hey Justin...

I just noticed something that doesn't make much sense to me - it's not a problem...

I have this site bookmarked as http://www.bmwr65.org/ and this never changes in the address bar as I move around the site.  So when I want to link to a particular thread, my address bar doesn't have the info for the particular thread.  Also the title in the header is still the old "The Unofficial and Purposely ..."   (When you look at the source code, it only has the noframes code?  Weird.)

I noticed someone's link that has all the thread info and the home page header looks different.  Using http://www.bmwr65.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl the title header now reads "The Hopefully New and Improved..." and when I go to the threads, all the link information is now in my address bar.   (Also much more source code here!)

Just thought it was interesting.  Why is that?  Check it out.

****DUH!!!****
I just figured it out.   The first link is a frames page that links you to the second....
