Title: Sorry, but this is HooRoo for now
Post by: Tony Smith on March 21, 2020, 09:53:56 PM
(Hooroo is a polite Australian term for "see ya later")

Firstly, nothing to do with my health, that is good and improving. My stem cell transplant went well and all indications are that I am in remission, hopefully a very long one.

Unfortunately my reason for quitting the group is that for some time I have been unable to log on using Chrome or Firefox, my credentials are accepted and then I get a cryptic message:-

 "bmwr65.org refused to connect"

I have been gaining access by the irksome process of using the Microsoft Edge browser, however this week all my machines have begun receiving a compulsory  "upgrade" to the new Microsoft edge and I have just found that it will not connect either.

If anyone has any bright ideas on a workaround I can be contacted at tony.b.smith@gmail.com.

I will remain active on the R65 Facebook list so I guess I can be contacted there too.

Best Regards to all my bmwr65.org friends

Tony Smith

Tony.....

I have had strange things going on with R65.org myself.

It's been months and months for me where I bring up the site and I land the site but "as a guest". If I click on the BOARD INDEX I will get a mostly blank screen with the directions to OPEN IN A NEW WINDOW. I click on that and a new window pops up and I'm in and signed on. At that point I X out of the original window and go on as it never happened.

Something is not right. I did some investigation and tried a few different things, with no luck. I found that opening the new window worked so I took the easy way out and continued down that path.

I keep waiting for another layer of problem to expose itself but so far so good.

Now that you have raised the question I may open up a few different browsers(I now use Edge) and see what changes occur if any. Don't expect much as my maintenance check list has this line in it...…..."If it continues to leak it still has oil in it"

I just installed Chrome and Firefox and I couldn't sign on to BMWR65.org with either one. I'm back to Edge.

I have noticed almost NO posts lately!

I was wondering about that. everyone bored to death "sheltering in place" the site should light up with so many at home and nothing to do.   I took a copy of the page I get when I land the site as a guest(used to always log me on automatically). After I land the site as a guest, the first thing I click on , index or try yo log in I get this page and when I click on open in another window, it does and everything is normal with me signed on.

I am not sure what is going on as I also have to use Edge to get in.  I don't know if there was a Chrome update that happened but it worked fine one day and not the next.

I am off-grid in the OK mountains for a while hiding from the bug...

I'm using a new browser call Brave which I can highly recommend as it's a lightweight program, very fast and consumes  fewer resources than other browsers. A bid plus is it has a built in ad blocker.  It's based on chromium so most chrome based  extensions will work.  It's fine with R65.org.

That's weird because both Edge and Brave work for me.  This isn't a simple problem then.

Tony and I are on different sides of the world with different equipment and internet suppliers. It's beyond my meager PC skills, so I will continue to get in thru Edge with the opening of a second window

I am working off-grid on a laptop with a Verizon phone as a hot-spot for internet and have the same issue.  I have looked on the YaBB Support Forum but see no other reports so have started a thread asking for some suggestions as to where to start.

I have a temporary solution - I installed an ancient version of Netscape. It whinges constantly about not being able to establish a secure connection to PayPal (the donate button), but otherwise works sort of OK.

I am not interested in using it long term as I have the horrors as to what using such an old browser might expose me to.

I was getting no response when clicking on links a few days ago when logging in, but fine at the moment with Chrome on an IPad.

I'm using a relatively new version of chrome, albeit on Ubuntu 18.04.  Seems to be working fine for me, although when I first visit bmwr65.org I show as guest, after clicking the first link i'm logged in (I suspect a forum bug that doesn't show the logged in user at first)

Firefox is also still an available browser, I've had to use that for some webex stuff recently.

Checking in using Chrome Version 80.0.3987.132 (Official Build) (64-bit) on a Windows 10 computer from Miami Fla using Comcast and having no problems signing in or browsing through the forum. I can see and read posts, posts with images.

I will say since the CORVID-19 virus and people being told to stay home, I have been occasional having issues with the general slowness of my home and Cell internet. My Amazon Fire TV has been buffering more lately and I have seen reports that some providers are cutting streaming quality (HD) to preserve bandwidth. At this point in time, as some others here have also commented on, things seem to be working OK.

So if I, " Move to Miami and use Chrome Version 80.0.3987.132 (Official Build) (64-bit) on a Windows 10 computer", All will be fine?

I just tried to log in with Edge and it came up as a visitor and when I went to log on it said "open in new window" I did and was in. I tried Chrome and i came up as a visitor and when I went to log on it took me to a blank page with no way out.

None of this stuff just started so please,  no corporate China Virus song.

You're the techie were the users with issues, some of us get on fine from around the globe and some of don't and it's been here awhile we have just lived with it or found a work around.

If there are any tests or information that we can help you with please let us know, were glad to duplicate our problems from any browser or platform from around the globe.

Thank you for that. If I had not provided the info and only said it works fine for me, I'd have been asked what I use, what ISP I have, etc. The software works, its working all other the place on many forums.

This is not a recent problem with forums. The "refused connection" problem is usually the host. I was asked by the ADMIN to check this forum, and I did. I have signed out, signed back in many times with no problem at this time. I am not a programmer but have run a yabb forum for many years in the past, and I now help out as a Global Mod on the developer's forum. My apologies that I have not been of more help to some of you.

I have been using both Chrome and Firefox. I refuse to use MS Edge. I just downloaded Brave that Barry suggested. On all three browsers if I try to go to bmwR65.org I get some sort of error, either can't open in this window or connection refused. If I try typing in r65.org on the address bar, I get a momentary message saying it is directing to the main site and when it connects everything is working and I am logged in.

I just tried that and it worked.  This is even stranger than the original problem!

Hi Tony,

Sorry to hear about your health problems. Hope it all works out for you. I just log on on with my Chrome browser without problem.

I note that many of you using auto log on seem to be having the problem. I open the page and THEN log on if I have something to say. Perhaps the auto log on scripts have been corrupted? Just my 2 cents.

I also noted a fall off in traffic on the site. I guess people are too preoccupied with other things at the moment. I have a small issue that I may post as a thread sometime soon.

Hello to all. Stay well and ride safe.

Now I've discovered  that I'm having trouble accessing  the  site. I usually use my phone, which can be problematic, but that is working for now.  I also use a Samsung tablet and that is doing strange things.  I can get to the main page but when I click on any of the category or thread links, it goes to a plain white, blank screen.  I went to Google, did a search for the site, and got on that way, but what I am seeing looks like it's from the 1980's. Very stripped down, no background  colors, different font. And things are jumbled up on the page.

Oddly enough, chrome browser on my phone is perfectly happy. Latest Firefox on pc. Not so much.  I suspect it has something to do with credentials or ssl protocol settings, but havent dug dug into it yet

I'm also getting the screwy user interface that looks like the internet from 20 years ago.  Logging out and signing back in on Chrome made it functional (most of the links weren't working before), but the interface still sucks.

Just tried it on Microsoft Edge  [smiley=puke2.gif] and everything works and looks as it should

I am at a total loss.  Works fine for some but not for others.  All of the YaBB folks have disappeared except for the dude that looked at it initially but he is not a developer.

I've been having problems for weeks, with screens like BPT has provided above. I've also had the "frames" messages others have had.

I'm using it fine at the moment, but on Firefox and I've told it to disable protection.

At the bottom of this page is "Powered by YaBB 2.6.12!".

At http://www.yabbforum.com/community/YaBB.pl?action=help we have "News: YaBBforum.com is up to date with the New YaBB 2.6.11 release!"

So, we're a release ahead of the YaBB forum. Is our software some sort of pre-release/beta?

For some reason a while back I could not log on as my unchanged security settings started rejecting the site, at least two years ago.  I am using Chrome V7(?) which is no longer supported.

After not recognising my user name I was able to request a password reset and here I am with a couple of hundred posts to the same name.
