The '82 LS project I picked up is starting and running just fine - BUT - after running for 15 - 20 seconds it starts smokin' like a freight train! I'm thinking that after sitting 13 or so years the oil rings are probably "stuck". Being a tightwad, I would just as soon not throw $100 worth of parts at it if this will likely clear up on it's own with a bit of limbering up.
If this was a car I would dump some B12 in the crankcase and let it idle for a while. I had mentioned this technique a few threads down (on boxerworks, trying to bait a response) and since nobody seemed to object (or my comment was totally ignored) I figure I have nothing to loose.
I have never messed with one that had been sitting this long before so I'm not 100% sure what my expectations should be. Thank goodness for NikaSil jugs or I'm sure the rings would have probably been rusted to the bore!

you may as well give your idea a try - I had heard of using another product from several people in this sort of circumstance, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was... must be getting old... I agree that you should try the least expensive methods of treatment first, too and keep my fingers crossed for your that
the rings are just stuck, and it isn't something worse.

Yeah, it'd suck if the cylinders were all gouged up. But, people tell me this plating is almost indestructible...

Try Marvel Mystery Oil to loosen up those rings - 2 oz in the gas (per 5 gallons) 10-12 oz in the engine oil. Make sure there is not a pile of sludge in the bottom of the pan first before you do this (Clean the pan and a fresh filter please). 8-)

It had fresh oil and new filter when I picked it up as the shop had been planning on getting it running and then reselling it.
After this cold snap, it has started smoking immediately after startup so today I warmed it up, pulled the plugs, and squirted a pretty fair amount of PB Blaster in each cylinder. I'll let the rings "marinate" for a couple of days and crank it up and see if it did it any good.
