Title: Culling The Herd
Post by: Bob_Roller on October 05, 2016, 07:15:58 PM
I want to ask an opinion of the active members on this site .

I've looked at our present membership ranks and found members that have have joined and have never been back online, or made any posts, some in excess of 900 days .

My outlook, is if you have not made a posting, or been online within a year of joining, that you really were not serious about this site from the beginning ,

In the past, this has caused severe heartburn with members that were effected by this .

Your input is requested !!!

"Machete" Bob !!! :o

A blanket email to those without a visit in a year. Let them know to sign on to continue membership. Give them a week and then "let the heads roll".

There are lots of places I have been to and signed up and then forgot about them and after that I forgot where they were. We might pick up a few active members that just forgot about us....... it happens

900+ days? Time to use your machete, cut the deadwood and offer Malox for the heartburn.

As to a "blanket email", unless these non-participants share the same email address, that's going to entail many hours of work for the admins. Justin, Bob, Mike... How much free time can you guys spare?

when I first was appointed a moderator here, I sent out around 800 emails to members that were in this position, not one response, the only member that made a posting, but has not been online in over 5 years ago and has not been back online since .

No emails this time !!

Behold the Lord High Executioner
A personage of noble rank and title —
A dignified and potent officer
Whose functions are particularly vital!
Defer, defer
To the Lord High Executioner!
Defer, defer
To the noble Lord, to the noble Lord
To the Lord High Executioner!

I think I'll send an email to all members, stating that if you have joined and have not made a posting in 1 year, you will be deleted .

Also, if you have made postings and not been online in 3 years, you will be deleted .

A big problem, is that a lot of members do not want to be contacted by email, that would require me to send a personalized email to these members, not worth my time or effort with this .

So, don't be surprised to see an email regarding this in the next few weeks or so .

Anyone have any additional viewpoints on this ??

I 'll wait until the admin of this site Justin has his say in this, as he has to answer to upset members that have been deleted, when they want to re-register .

It's prudent to trim the deadwood from time to time.  I seldom post but do check the site from time to time for technical information and see what's going on.  But unless I think I have specific knowledge of a technical issue I don't post as there are so many more experienced wrenches.  I wonder if others do the same?

Just do the cutting.... if they are serious they will come back.... if they haven't posted in a year why worry.

Yeah, I'm all for getting rid of the "deadwood" but unfortunately I have to put up with the whiners (sometimes abusive) when they want to know what happened to their account.

The global e-mail sounds good.  Maybe sign it, Bob "The Hangin' Judge" Roller...

I would say that if somebody's account is 6 mo, or older, and they have never logged in - whack 'em!

If they haven't posted after a year, but it's obvious they log in and "lurk" - leave 'em alone.

If somebody's never posted AND has not logged in for a year or more - whack 'em!

If they have posts then give 'em the 3 year grace period - then make 'em walk the plank!

OK, like I have stated earlier, created a profile here, and have never logged, or made a posting within a year, they are deleted, if a posting has been made and three years has lapsed since the last login, you will be deleted .

This email will be made shortly . ;D

Bob, I think if someone logs in but doesn't post that shouldn't bring the axe down on 'em.  Not everybody is a post-whore like Monte!   [smiley=ROTFLMAO.gif]

My intent, was, that if you have made at least one post and have logged in within 3 years, that they would not be deleted .

Doesn't look like I didn't made that clear .

From the looks of it, I messed up sending the email, I didn't select who got the email before I hit send .

Bob, if somebody logs in periodically but has never posted I don't feel they should be whacked.  There are at least two forums that I can think of that I have belonged to for several years that I have NEVER made a post on.  Given your criteria I would be history on them...  The rest of your specifics I agree with.

I don't think I got that email....

If somebody hasn't even logged in for years I don't know how they would know their account had been closed.

Ed, when I sent the email, I forgot to select which members got the email, so it didn't get sent .

I did this about 5 years ago and one member that was removed, came back and was quite upset about this, I had to remove his posts and ban him from the site, he also sent an email to Justin, Justin was comfortable with what I did, except for not saving the posts that I deleted .

Trying to prevent this from happening again .

I've got a few coworkers that are moderators on some automotive forums and they said that when they clean house every 4-5 years, the same thing happens a few ex-members get quite vocal about being removed and end up getting banned for their behavior .

Here's my new plan, If you have joined the site and have not been logged in when online for 1 year, you will be removed, all other members, if you have not been logged in and online in 3 years you will be removed .

I'll wait a few days and see what other members here have to say about this .

I'll send the email and give members 4 weeks to visit the site while logged in, before they will be removed .

I'lll send the email on Nov. 01 and start removing members on Dec. 01 .

Bob, sounds reasonable.  The "not logged on" trigger is the key.

I ran this across the coworkers that are moderators and the first thing  they made comment about, was being logged in .

Showing up as a ' guest ' as this is how it works on this site if you are not logged in,  won't show up on the profile  as having visited the forum .

If you can't take the time to even log in, why should you be kept active as a member. JMHO

Did anyone receive an email from me ??

I got a couple AND 38 separate mail failure messages due to e-mail addresses no longer being any good.  I'm thinking they went out...

I think I may have been disconnected when I tried to send the messages, I tried 3 or 4 times and never got a message that they were successfully sent , that may explain the multiple emails that you may receive .

I was just allowed back online here since around 1120 AM, about 2 and a half hours ago .

Alright, thanks for the replies .

Thanks for the warning email.

I'll put my hand up as one of those who lurk about these forums.  If I jump online regularly, my browser will log me in, but every now and again it forgets me, so I appear as a guest when visiting.  Mostly, I don't even notice as I just skim recent posts and don't have much to contribute.  There have been a few projects ahead of the old R65.  This will now change as I have set a deadline for the next DSG ride.

Cheers guys, and I'll try to be more active.

I deleted a few members (15 or so ) the last few days, that were beyond the time frame that I stated back in November .

Joined never made a post or logged in while here for 365 days since joining.

Made at least one posting and have not logged in for 1095 days, three years .

I may be the cause of a few of them as well . ::)
