Title: Returning user - 'new' R65LS
Post by: AJB on May 31, 2016, 09:28:02 AM
Hi everyone,  haven't posted for a long time as I had to sell my old R65 to fund something else, but have now returned to the fold with my new (to me) 1982 R65LS that has covered a grand total of 15900 miles.

Picked her up on Saturday and rode her the 50 or so miles home and was beaming from ear to ear, although she does have a LH carb leak and the idle stuck at 3-4000 RPM intermittently.  Small issues that will (I hope) be easily solved.

Another stray rubber cow returns to our happy herd.

Welcome back to the asylum, AJB.

Many thanks - great to be back!  I haven't come across the term 'Rubber Cow' before, so I'll just go and run that through my favourite search engine before I comment further!! ;D

Got it - 'Rubber Cow' (from http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/germanwords.htm):

"Gummikuh:  often seen in conjunction with a description on handling of old BMW airheads...it means rubber cow; as in Airheads feeling like there is a rubber hinge in the middle."

Thanks for the re-welcome guys - I appreciate it.  Have ordered myself a float chamber gasket to sort the carb leak.  Any ideas why the idle sticks at 3-4000 rpm intermittently?  Anything common on these?

Possible sticky bob weights in the bean can. There's an oval-shaped metal plug on the side of the Ignition Trigger Unit (ITU). Remove it and squirt some solvent in there to flush out sticky old oil. Follow up with some spray silicone lube and Bob's your brother.

Also, check throttle cables for smooth operation.

I thought Bob was your uncle.  ;D
At least he was to my ex(English) wife.

I agree with checking the cables, I tend to disagree with the "sticky bob weights" cure proposed by Monte to the following extent.

If after spraying solvent and lube into the bean-can the idle returns to normal, congratulations, you found the problem.

Now remove the bean-can, strip it down and after carefully cleaning and lubricating - put it back together. Do it may way and it will stay fixed for another 30 odd years.

You're correct, Marc. I was thinking of Arkansas peeps. You know, Uncle Dad.

+1 to Tony.  The last one I had do this needed a complete tear-down and "de-rusting" of all the bits, lube, reassemble...

Hi,
I have just noticed your post after an absence of a few months. I also have an R65LS, my second, in red. I bought it last August after a long search for the right bike and covered 2,000 miles since. I hope the issues you had with yours are now sorted out.
Regards,
Will

Hi Will,
Unfortunately the fact that I'm trying to get my R1100S through it's MOT so I can sell it, combined with the almost constant rain (summer, eh?) have meant that the LS has dropped down the list.

I did manage to find 10 minutes to replace the LH float chamber gasket and have a quick look over the linkages, which led to the discovery that the RH choke was stuck open slightly.  This may have been the intermittent high idle issue - but I've not been able to give her a run to find out.

Where-abouts in the UK are you?

Funny - I am just about to post my "new member" post and read this one first as I just bought an '82 R65LS as well - after you described a leaking left carb and a high idle of 3-4K I almost thought we bought the same bike!! I will keep following this for fixes for the issues!

Hopefully not the same bike - mine was still there on Sunday when I last looked!  Carb leak was the float gasket.  Fixed the left and then the right started to leak - noticed on a trip to my local BMW dealer for something else so checked with the parts dept on the price of a float chamber gasket, and they had one on the shelf for £2.41 (from memory).  It's probably the cheapest part I've ever bought from a dealer!

As for the intermittent high idle, the choke mechanism on the right hand carb is slightly sticky - as long as don't use the choke or, if I do, I remember to check it's closed properly with my finger, all is good.
