Title: New to me 82 R65 "RT"
Post by: lucky on March 16, 2016, 09:35:39 PM
Hello, dear all !!

I just got my very first R65 today and lucky enough having this R65 with a reasonable price with the condition.

New to the R65 but far from new to the airheads.

Few photos for your entertainment.

In less a hour, she looked much more like a regular R65 than a "hybrid".

ya.. that sear has to go

And she needs a shower,

This number looks right to me with many details of this blue thing.

I thought this R65 only rear rack is pretty cool.

I was told R65 is a very under rated bike so I am very excited about this one and can't wait for taking her out for a spin.

Well, lucky you, Lucky!  Sorry for the lame pun. Couldn't let it go. ;)

I note the "domed" Bings and Brembo calipers which would indicate an '82 or later model year. What birthday does your VIN say? The twin disc brakes were usually found only on the North American imported LS model R65s or some Euro-sold models. The seat's tail piece is also standard fitment on the R65.

I'm sure you will enjoy a lighter weight R65 without the extra load of the fairing and lowers. And that seat... well.

I do see a "peanut" rocker box cover peeking out from under a towel in amongst your collection. Share with us or we may have to sic Nurse Ratched on you.

The R65s (and R80s) are fantastic urban assault vehicles. The shorter wheelbase, lighter weight and quick handling in traffic will impress you; particularly if your primary Airhead experiences have been with their bigger brothers.

The bags and rack are a bonus as is the ride-off stand. Some light touring in your future?

You already know the post-adoption drill with a new-to-you Airhead. Keep us posted on your progress and thanks for the photos. Us asylum inmates live for R65 porn.

I sure would love to have that seat, if it was black.

I wonder if it's possible to dye vinyl and keep it permanent, rainproof, etc?    :-?

Take it to a good shoe repair shop. They can dye material. My 30-year old Tony Lama boots are living proof.

Yes you can. I used a product named SEM on my brown 1979 R65 to make it black. one coat almost 20 years ago and it is still black with no touch up this pic of the seat is within a couple of years ago so its after 15 years anyway. Any time I have to color upholstry I look for the SEM product line................ now wither he'll  part with that seat or not thats another question LOL

I have thought couple options about the seat, but what people usually say, life is full of surprises.

A very good friend of mine happens to "have" a nice almost brand new seat in his spare part department, even with the correct year.

The "  "peanut" rocker box cover peeking out from under a towel in amongst your collections " bike above is a 81 R100 with dustbin fairing which I just put it up this winter.

If you don't plan to keep that RT fairing set, it could be worth some good money to another airhead on ibmwr.org/market, or other places..

Welcome aboard!

I would try to sell/trade your old seat before dying it.  I bet my wife would love that seat on her blue R65!

Thank you for the suggestion.

I am going to keep those two items for awhile until I figure out the whole plan for this bike.
I found always need something that I just sold in the past. However, maybe that's why my "used parts department" is getting messy.

Justin, how tall is your wife?

Think she might be interested in a lowered R65 seat in outstanding condition?

Little update on this R65 project.

I have been working on many airheads, and this is the first one that has all the odd parts which I didn't have any at all. However, this is how "project" all about, enjoying the process of problems solving, and learn from it.

Considering we have been away for almost two weeks, and there were 3 more bikes fall on my lap, I thought I have been doing fairly well on this little BMW.

There are few more parts for the front brake are on the way from MAXBMW. I can't wait to take her out for a dance.

Steve, she's about 5'6", she is trying to work up the nerve to try to ride again after tearing a hamstring that never grew back so she has one leg that might cause her grief.  A lowered seat might help...

3 months and couple bikes later.
She is finally ready for a real ride.
Washed, registered and ready to put some happy miles on her.

She doesn't look too bad next to her brothers.

Ooh, shiny! That's an R65 to be proud of.

That garage looks really new. And is that some sorta sidecar rig on the far right? GoKart maybe?

It took longer and more money than I expect to bring it back to stock form, but I think it will be worth for the long run.

Yes, this is a new 24X32 two storage garage we put in the back yard few months ago. It is always nice to have little more space.

The one of the far right is my wheel horse ... gokart ... if you called it fun
