Title: New member in Sydney, Australia
Post by: MichaelSydney on September 23, 2014, 03:50:40 AM
Hi Guys. I just joined yesterday and today am happy to announce I have bought an R65. 1983 with just 40,000km, not yet "run in" ! It looks very much like that mileage is genuine too.

The previous owner has loved the bike and carefully maintained it. It is fitted with two new Michelin tyres and Koni shocks.  I think I only have to attend to a few cosmetic things. Being semi-retired I have plenty of time for tinkering.

Looking forward to putting a few more clicks on the bike and hopefully meeting up with some fellow riders.

Michael

Welcome from Blighty. Hope you enjoy her - she looks in good order from all the way over here.

Cheers

Welcome to our asylum, Michael.

Very sharp looking '83 model. Looks well cared for. Those mufflers are aftermarket items as both the standard R65 and the LS models had black cans with flat ends so your new ride may be a bit more roarty than stock. I dumped the stock mufflers from both my R65s and installed repop Norton-pattern peashooters.

Your first Hot Tip: The R65 battery covers have a bad habit of detaching themselves while you blissfully motor down the road. Particularly the right side. The lift handle will often catch and hold the left.
So. Run a red zip tie -color match, you know- through the louvers and secure the tie around the frame member. Not so tight that you crack the cast resin cover$... just kinda loosely snug.

Welcome from Cairns Australia also.

I am envious of your rear view mirrors which I think were an Australian only fit due to Australia at the time not liking the convex mirrors fitted standard.

Nice bike and I hope you have a lot of fun on it.

Thank you gentlemen. You will be seing me here a good deal i think as I have a lot to learn and this is clearly the place to do that!

Thanks for the mention of securing the side covers montmil. I will attend to that as a matter of urgency. Can you tell me, should there be a lift out tool tray in that area under the seat, above the battery? On lifting the seat there is currently a clear view of the battery top.

The mufflers are manufactured by a well respected local company http://staintune.com.au/  . Nothing too noisy but a nice note.

This is a long overdue move. 40 years ago I was living and working in Cologne, Germany. My mate had an R60 and I have great memories of that bike. Anyone fancy a quick run down the autobahn for a weekend in Amsterdam? (I was younger then :) )  I figured I had procrastinated long enough so now I have my own airhead.

Yes you should have a tool tray, probably a bit much to expect the factory tools to still be there though. New tool trays can still be had from motobins.co.uk amongst others.

On the topic of Motobins, by the fact that you bought one, you must be planning to do your own maintenance and (at least) minor spannering. You will quickly discover that whilst they are pleasant people, the people who bought Don Wilson's old workshop have a rather expensive view of what their parts are worth. Similarly the only other major BMW airhead workshop, Munich Motors in Perth are equally expensive and use the world's slowest courier service to send stuff to you  (although they charge for a premium service). The BM Workshop in Brisbane is a good place to check for 2nd hand parts, but airhead bits are getting rarer.

So, back to Motobins who have provided a consistent and reasonably priced parts, both genuine and pattern for a very long time, I ahve been buying from them since the middle 80s and they were well established then.

eBay, used cautiously is also a good place for parts (I'll bet you can find a parts tray there today) there are a number of German sellers who provide good prices and DHL provide very reasonable postage rates - for example it cost me only $88 to have a front rim (less tyre and discs) posted to me and it took only 9 days to arrive at my post office, the purchase price was about $AUS80. Compare to the Sydney wrecker who wanted $250 for the rim and $80 to post it to me. By way of comparison, I did in fact buy a broken Tacho from that wrecker and I paid for it the same day as I paid for the rim discussed above - the rim beat the Tacho to Cairns.

Thanks Montmil, red cable ties in place. I picked up the bike today and the side covers were my first job. The previous owner was sad to see her go but has bought a new BM to ease his pain :)

Next job is a massive fuel leak from the left Bing... looks like a stuck needle valve or float... stops immediately when I turn off the fuel tap.

Tony, I will keep an eye out for a tool tray. In the mean time I have a container that will sit in the space for carrying odds and ends.

Check for a bit of trash twix the float needle and the needle seat.

Drop the float bowl and place a pan under the carb. Fuel on and jiggle the float up n' down. Might flush out something. Also, check both bowls for debris in the bottom of the bowls.

An in-line fuel filter is always a good idea,

You may want to pull the fuel tank and drain out any junk or water that often collects on the no-petcock side of the fuel tank. Fluswh with water and let dry for a few days. No sense putting any water back in the tank.  ;)

Welcome aboard!

That is a very nice looking R65 you've got there - and you've come to the best place on the internet for swapping stories and info on these bikes!

The Staintune systems are very highly regarded among the best aftermarket systems for the BMWs - and in a number of ways are better than the factory stuff.   Unless you wanted to try to compete in concours-class bike shows, I wouldn't change 'em!

No problems. A little dirt plus a drop of water in each float bowl. All functioning as it should now. These Bings are so easy to drop the float bowl!

The previous owner has fitted good fuel filters but I will keep an eye on it. A fuel tank clean sounds like a good idea.

Fantastic weather here in Sydney (after the vicious storms of yesterday blew out to sea!).

Oh, forgot to mention, I Joined the Ulysses Club (Grow Old Disgracefully! ) and registered the bike on historic plates. Massive savings on government charges and insurance but limited to club events only and local use for tuning/maintenance. Fortunately the Ulysses is such a big club that there are many club events, almost daily!

I am looking for some bits and pieces for the bike, maybe some Australians here can help? An original tool kit would be nice to find or alternatively information as to what it should include.

I would also like to fit some suitable panniers and racks if I can find some. I think the older style second hand would look better than new.

I am thinking I could make my own tail rack to fit a top box as an interim measure.

Hi Slow
Thanks very much. I am very new to bikes but soaking up all the info I can. This forum is a great place for knowledge and support.

I finally got my licence to ride this week so have been getting on the road whenever possible. Heading out again this morning for a short run up the coast. :)
