Hello guys I am new to BMW bikes and have purchased a 1980 R65 project. My plan is to work on the bike over the Winter and look forward to a bit of help. I will upload some photos when I get the bike into my garage once I have made some space.

Greetings, and welcome aboard!
We've a number of members in the UK, scattered about - not sure if many are near to Edinburgh, but they will be chiming in here eventually..

Hi Sam
Welcome to the forum
It's a great resource with knowledgable and friendly members, they even let complete idiots like me ask stupid questions ::)
We have a goodly number of UK members with one in Scotland I believe.
Looking forward to seeing some pics...

Good to have you with us, Sam. Quite an international group we are having our R65s in common.
Yessir, we really enjoy seeing photos of member bikes. Do you ride anything else out of your shed?

Welcome Sam,
First thing you need to know is that 78 -80 models are in the minority and there are a surprising number of not so obvious detail differences between the 78-80 models and the 81 -84. some time back I had a go I at documenting them but it's by no means exhaustive.

Thanks for the welcome guys, I do have a few bikes in the shed and they are a bit of a mix the one I am using this summer is a 1200 sportster which is great as I am not getting any younger. An MV Augusta and a couple of smaller Hondas including a 2 stroke make up the rest.
I will read with the interest the model differences between the older and newer 65s

Interestingly, I have the ATE brakes on my 81, otherwise everything else is as per Barry's list

Would not put it past the BMW Motorrad bean counters to instruct the factory to use up existing stocks prior to switching to new model upgrades. Brakes, Bings n' whatever.
I always wondered if some dealer ever uncrated an Airhead with one 'flat top' Bing and one 'domed" carb. ::)
