Title: Hello
Post by: Doug_McLaren on May 04, 2014, 02:02:49 PM
Yet another new member here. I'm a 58 year old bloke from N/East England. Although I've had bikes since I was 17 I've never owned a BMW, until now that is. I've always had a liking for BMW Airheads and a couple of weeks ago I landed myself a 1980/1981 R65. It would barely run when I got it, but after some minor fettling it's now going quite well. When I get time I'll take a pic or two, busy working on another shaft drive twin right now, can I say the words Moto Guzzi here?

Hi Doug, welcome to the looney bin !!! :D

I have no problem with Moto Guzzi, I have an '87 Lario, just got it on the road a year ago, forgotten bike in the back of the garage scenario .

Welcome to the farm!  Airheads Rule!  And Guzzis count among the airheads, at least as cousins.  Most everything you will need to know to refresh/restore your R65 can be found here.

As promised, here's a couple of pics. It had a funky solo seat on when I got it but I've now changed that to a standard dual seat. The huge Rickman fairing does it's job admirably but it's a bit big for my liking so I reckon that it'll be going the journey soon, there's room behind the screen for a couple of house plants a maybe a family photo or two!

Lots of excess weight to be shifted off it, unless all the other bikes are yours as well in which case you have one for every occasion! The 65 looks in great condition though ;)

Hi Doug my 79 had a similar fairing it was the first thing I ditched, I got a good price for it on eBay and put the funds towards my rebuild.
Which bit of the north east... I bought mine from a guy in Stockton just off the A19.

Hi Lou, I'm in South Shields and I got the bike from a bloke down in Heighington near Newton Aycliffe.

I'll need a couple of original front indicators if I take the fairing off, I know I've got some in my garage, in fact I've found one already but that was just a fluke,  I'm sure that there's a black hole in there as things often disappear only to reappear at a later date.
