I'm a new member and a brand new R65 owner. I've been riding my neighbors '81 Honda CM200 for 2 seasons and have around 5000 miles under my belt. I recently (the other day) purchased an 81 R65 which is not even in my possession yet. I'm thoroughly excited to own an airhead and I have been Lusting after one ever since I saw my godfathers r90 when I was a teenager. I could not be happier that there is such an active community of R65 owners and such a wealth of info on this forum, thanks for having me!

Welcome to our own little asylum, Pete. The 81's a good year with the intro of the electronic bean can.
Vermont, you say? You'll have plenty of time over your winter to get your Airhead set up and ready for the Spring thaw.
Some other members up in your area. Hook up with them when you can and again, glad to have you with us.

Hello Pete, Nice R65 you got there, especially the dual disc setup.
Both of our bikes looks almost the same right down to the fairing, side mirror and production year. :)

Welcome! Nice bike

Hi Pete, and welcome!
I'm relatively new here as well, it's a great community. I'm in southern NH, maybe not too far from you?
That's a nice looking bike, mine's still very much a work in process, but as was said earlier the New England winter provides lots of time for wrenching!

Welcome aboard, Pete!
Wherebouts in the Green mountain state are you? (I spent the vast majority of my first 37 years there, and my family and many friends who are still there have me making numerous trips around the state).
-
I'm up in the Burlington area.

It looks like HST backed out of this purchase. She's mine now. Kind of weird seeing this thread after I made the deal. I won't be bringing her back to Maine 'till it warms up some.

So does anyone know anything about the fairing in this bike? It not the LS fairing. Original? Aftermarket?

It might be the one that was available as an optional extra from BMW. You can see it listed in the parts fiche. I would think they are quite rare.

That sure looks like it is the same one. Thanks, Barry. It'll probably be another month until I get the bike back here to Portland, it's driving me crazy that it's so far away. I can't ride anyway, with all this snow, but at least I could be working on it.

It's Called a "Cockpit Cover" and was an original factory accessory from BMW. It's only a R65 and R80ST specific part, so it is hard to come by these days.

Is there a windshield that goes with it?

No. Just what you see in the microfiche picture, and the picture of your bike.

I'm getting really psyched now. I was hoping to pick up the R65 in a month or so but a friend's brother who lives near me was planning on going up to Vermont and offered to bring it down for me. Yes! He met the seller this morning and sent me this pic when she was all loaded up:

Now I just have to wait until Monday when he gets back into town.

You know you're in Maine when you see a BMW airhead loaded into a Series 3 Landrover.
:)

She's home:

She's got a brand new BMW battery and her original toolkit:

I'll change all her fluids and wait for some warm weather.

Congrats, looks like a real nice ride!
Does anyone know what brand of rear rack that is? I'd like something similar.
-
Lokks like the bike is in good condition .
What's all that white stuff, volcanic ash !!! ;D ;D
-
I'm not sure about the rack, Al, but I'll take a closer look for you. Hopefully the strange white stuff will be gone soon, Bob, very soon.
I just started her up for a bit and put her in the garage. I'll change all the fluids and clean her up a bit. The PO bought her in 1986. The odometer reads 10,837 miles. I've got the receipt from two years ago when the carbs and brakes and ignition were totally rebuilt, $1,242 worth of work.
The gas tank is pretty rough, dents on both sides and it's been coated inside.
I'm pretty excited.
