Title: Anyone fitted handguards?
Post by: trips on January 01, 2013, 04:46:04 PM
Looking for something to break the wind for cold weather riding. I looked at Barkbusters, it looks like the master cylinder would interfere with the handlebar mount system.

Haven't put them on my R65 but I did put a set on my K75 and they are just what is needed to give your hands a break from the cold. What you need are the hand guards from a BMW GS. They are designed to fit around the m/c. This is the Real OEM page for the R80 GS. You need part #5 and they are available.

Thanks much, can't figure out what that part #12 is, do you know if it's part of the kit? It looks like what the right one fastens to.

I believe Rob has put GS guards on maybe he'll chime in...

Part #12 is part of the kit. It is a cover that goes over the top of the m/c. These guards mount in one place, the mirror. You remove the mirror from the perch, then with the guard in place you replace the mirror, through the guard and perch together. The mirror stem is what holds the guard in place. Part #12 is them placed over the top of the m/c and held in place with screws through the guard.

Here is the parts page from Max BMW for the R100GS.

Anyone in UK could look at the Nauticalia catalog. (www.nauticalia.com). I have a pair of their "activity gloves" they are really waterproof and keep fingers at least non-frozen. Also they have soft leather palm and finger grip which is good on a motorcycle. Cost here is £40. I also have a pair of ski gloves I bought in Switzerland. They are about as warm but maybe not as waterproof, I haven't tried them in the rain. However they are bright red which makes them super-visible to sleepy car drivers!

Hmm, seems quite a bit of the right handguard needs to be ground/cut out...

I don't understand what needs to be cut out. The handguards that I purchased fit without any modification. Just remove the mirror, slide the handguard in place and insert the mirror back in place to hold it. The only thing else needed is the top cover for the mc, which is optional.

I have the round MC, which I seem to remember someone mentioning, when I posted my first pics of the bike, may not be stock to that year. Really just a little notching around the MC. Cool beans, got my dual front discs fitted, fork seals replaced, dual sport tires mounted (hard size to find, I wanted knobbies, but these I can maybe leave on all year), heated gear plug-in installed, and hand guards fitted, I should be good down to 0 degrees F now. :D Pics to follow, I have to get my wife to give me a ride to my buddy's, where we worked on it. My BMW owners of WNY Club party is Wednesday, I may ride to it. The predicted high temp is 18, if I do, bet I'm the only one who does.

I bought a set of the guards from Max's and they went on without a problem.

Trips.  Could you post up some pics.

What dual sport tires did you install?  (Size and brand)

Thanks in advance... [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

I bought the r80 gs guards linked above, they work fine, the MC cover thing probably stiffens the attachment, but the left one doesn't have it, so... I punched a small hole in each near the bar and ziptied both to the bars, firm and solid. with Hippo Hands installed, they keep blowback from pressing against the brake and clutch levers. Off for a ride today.

Like Semper, I am also very interested in your tire choice, Trips??!

Shinko 244 Dual Sport, 3.50-18 front and 4.10-18 rear. Really hard to find dual sport for these, knobbies are nonexistent. Kind of glad I didn't find knobbies, don't need them, really, the dual sports are fine, I can run around in my yard in 6-8 inches of snow effortlessly, and they are quiet enough on the road I can probably leave them on all year. Odd thing is the front looks wider than the back, mounted on the bike, must be an illusion, though I haven't gotten a tape measure out.

I can't say enough about the Hippo Hands, I did about 100 miles today in 14-16 F temps, heated gear was totally unnecessary, between my Firstgear one piece thermo suit and the Hippo Hands, rode the last 20 miles home with the gear off, never got cold. Probably a good thing, I killed the battery trying to start it today, probably because I used the gear last ride and didn't put it on the tender. It fired twice, but didn't quite catch, it stalled. I jumped it and figured it would charge riding. I used the gear sparingly on the way out, at only 25% after leaving it off for the first 10 miles, and ran it a gear lower when riding through towns, but when I stalled it out after 40 or 50 miles, it needed a jump again, so I'm thinking the charging system may not be as robust as I thought, though I used it twice before with no problems? Unless it never recovered from starting out dead, nights have been 0-5 degrees F, it hasn't run in a week, asking it to start at 15 F may have been expecting too much from the old girl.

Boy, it's a ghost town around here in the winter. A couple pics of the Shinkos, good in snow, not so good uphill in mud, LOL.
