Probably you read about the Motorcycle Cannonball event held in September of 2010. In that event, 45 people riding motorcycles no newer than 1915 attempted to ride from Kitty Hawk, NC to Santa Monica, CA in a bit over 2 weeks.
The organizer has begun preparations for another Cannonball, to be held September 7-21, 2012. This time the route will be longer: over 3800 miles; and harder: crossing the northern tier and the high Rockies. It will run from Newburgh, NY (just outside of NYC and the site of a new motorcycle museum) to San Francisco in 15 days. The bikes can now be as new as 1929 models.
This is what lets me in. I am rider #52 and will make the attempt on my 1928 BMW R52. So far, I am the only entrant with a BMW.

I wish you lots of luck for a trouble free ride, and I also expect that your BMW will trounce many inferior bikes along the way! The preparation on this is going to be critical, I think. Have you already been through your R52 crank, journals, etc? Does the R52 use the same type of slingers and general oiling system as on the much later /2?
I think that a BMW stands a good chance on these types of 'endurance' races - bikes like a 1929 Henderson would likely take you as far as top speed and HP goes, but I can't think that those inline-4 aircooled engines would like that kind of continuous operation..

I'm not sure how many people will follow along the way. I've got friends who just moved near the start, and probably several friends will follow along the last two days in California. I'm not sure how much support I'm going to get in Sturgis, SD, however.

I will write some more stuff next week, after all the family obligations are over. I need to make plans to overhaul the transmission and the front forks. I need to get serious about buying spares and making a list of tools to bring along. I have to outfit the Sprinter to carry everything. Lots of topics for discussion!

The Sprinter is a Mercedes van. Gaining popularity in the US for it's large increase in headroom. Some bike racers even fit a bunk bed above the front seat area. A couple bike mags reviewed the van in their pubs.

Chase vehicles, and apparently, even ride-alongs are welcomed. The As Monte says, the Sprinter is built by Mercedes. While they were sinking a ton of money into Chrysler, the Sprinters were badged as Dodges here, and that'w what mine is.
Most of the pictures in that link are the newer model, introduced in 2006 I think. Mine's an '05 model high top, with the mid length (148") body. The 2.7l inline 5 turbodiesel motor delivers an amazing 23-24mpg while cruising on the freeway, and a friend who has the long body (170") and travels extensively with it says that it doesn't matter how much you load it up, the mileage stays the same.
As I mentioned in my blog (http://www.vintagebmw.org/v7/cannonball_blog), these are the thing to use for hauling a vintage bike or two to a meet in Europe. I haven't done anything to the inside yet other than throw in a couple of wheel chocks, but it's something I have to start thinking about seriously.

I wish you all the best for all stages involved in this great adventure! The physical end of things sure will be important so lots of exercise this winter?? Gotta keep alert out there. I've just read about a device that is experimental so far but will monitor brain waves for neuron activity and give an alert if the "synapes ain't snapping" like they should. Its called "Body Wave". Will be a godsend for nuclear power plant workers, long distance truckers, aircraft controllers and long dist. motorcyclists (like me!) if it ever hits the marketing stage! Weighs 170 grams and can be strapped anywhere on the body.

Sue, you are a sweetheart. But let's think about this...
Darryl is planning to plop his rather vintage body onto a 12-horsepower very vintage classic BMW and head out a 3800 mile romp. I'm pretty danged sure his "synapes ain't snapping" done stopped sparkin' a l-o-n-g time ago.
Only a crazed, but very confident, fellow would attempt this feat. I've already PM'ed Darryl and shared with him that if he's game for the Cannonball, I'm going to pony up some money to support his efforts. It's an expensive undertaking. We should not allow him to do this "alone". Let's ride with him, vicariously, and share in his winning attitude.

Well, this started a long time ago, but I did FINALLY get my website set up to accept money.
As you may recall from this ancient post, I have entered my 1928 BMW R52, a 500cc sidevalve machine with 12hp, 3 speed transmission and no rear suspension, into the 2012 Motorcycle Cannonball (http://www.motorcyclecannonball.com). This time/speed/distance event will run from Newburgh, NY (outside NYC) to San Francisco over 17 days, from September 7 to 23, with one day off in the middle. Otherwise, the 75 entrants will be averaging about 275 miles/day on their bikes, all of which were built no later than 1929.

I've been blogging on and off about things over here (http://vintagebmw.org/v7/cannonball_blog), so if you want more detail, that's the place to go.
I have been through the transmission, new bearings and shimmed out correctly, but it still whines some in 3rd (top) gear -- I will just chalk that up to straight cut teeth. While out testing, I lost my kickstart lever, and it turned out to be difficult to source a replacement, but I hope to get it in the next week or two from Germany.
The final drive has also been rebuilt, and I stepped down a tooth on the pinion, which cuts my top speed a bit but gives the bike more oomph when climbing a grade.
I have a second complete set of cylinders/pistons/valves that is currently being finished, just in case. I'm also waiting for my spare magneto, which was rebuilt in Germany, to arrive. I was over in der Vaterland last month and also got a complete set of gaskets for the engine/trans/final drive and a spare clutch plate.
The front end of the bike is apart at the moment. I had never been through that, but was waiting until I returned from Germany with a set of tapered roller bearings for the steering head. Sure enough, the original loose ball bearings were in the steering head (26 little balls in each bearing, just waiting to jump out!), but then that required a spacer. I got that done, but decided the front wheel needed new bearings, which I'm picking up this morning.
I've been working hard on getting my Sprinter outfitted for the trip. It needs to not only be able to carry the bike, but act as a workshop. I've laid heavy, waterproof vinyl flooring, built a fold out worktable and installed an overhead flourescent light.
Tomorrow UPS is supposed to deliver a big 1500 watt inverter, and I will have to tear apart the cab to install it. That should easily be able to drive the lighting, a small pancake compressor and any electrical tools we might need. I will have power strips on either side of the van to make it easy to use a drop light.
I have had a couple of wheel chocks in the van, but they have been loose; I'm going to mount them so that they are fixed when I need them and can be removed when not.
I need to get the bike back together and do some riding! I'm leaving CA for NY on 8/31. My 5 person team will assemble at the house of some friends of mine in Amenia, NY, not too far away from the start in Newburgh.
I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous!

I've been following your blog. It's impressive how many friends and contacts you have in the BMW fatherland. Sounds as if they'll be riding with you, in spirit, as will all of us who are pulling for you here in the R65 asylum.

As everyone here knows, when you have a noncurrent bike, you have to start building a network of people who can supply the parts and do the work you need for the bike. It seems like that network changes almost completely for each different generation of BMWs.
While I was in Berlin, I met Torsten Tausch (http://www.torsten-tausch.de). He is focused on the Stecktank (hanging tank) Rohrrahmen (tube frame) bikes, like my R52. He had about 8 of these bikes in various stages of assembly in his workshop. He had split case motors lying around like cord wood. I wish I had access to all his parts!

I've been off the forum for awhile and just saw your post here. That will be an amazing trip for sure.
And here it is the middle of August now, so it's coming up soon. Don't forget to breathe! ;) That will definitely help. But once you get on the road the nervousness will disappear really fast, I'm sure.

Well, it's getting down to it. I've ordered all the magnetic signs with peoples' and companies' names; they should be in two days before I set sail for NY. I'm still waiting for some parts to trickle in from der Vaterland. I'm pretty sure at least a couple will have to be sent to meet me somewhere along the route, like a carb float. Mostly I have to get my tools and loose parts together and organize them in the van.
BTW, none of this is getting rid of the butterflies. :o

Yesterday was a very wet and long ride for Darryl and Team Boxer Rebellion -finishing late due to a couple cagers wadding up their cars on the wet roads and stalling traffic.
Support from the Team 52 crew are taking care of the usual and, thankfully, small issues on the bike.

I'll do that Monty. I've actually met him. Once was at the BMW MOA rally in Redmond Oregon. We also met up at the Autumn Beemer Bash in Quincy, CA. So if I see him I will surely give him the R65 salute! ;D (now just to figure out what that might be :D )

Looking at the daily Stage results of the Cannonball, I note there are thirty riders "tied" in points for first place. I've read the limited amout of rules posted on the Rally web site and nothing explains how the rankings of 1st through 30th are determined.
Also note that our man Darryl is riding in Class One. His nearest Class One competitor is in 33rd place riding a 1926 Sunbeam.

I got this back from the "Cannonball" folks. answers some questions but certainly not all.
"Hi Joe,
The riders are given the rules with registration and they are posted on the "Rules" page of the website, but that doesn't explain the scoring. Scoring is a bit complicated since it includes a combination of many factors, including accumulated miles ridden, Class, and Year of bike. Points are subtracted for a variety of infractions.
Class is determined by: Class I-bikes with displacement of 749cc or less, Class II- bikes with 750cc-1000cc displacement-Class III-bikes with 1001cc or more displacement). Rider age only facors in case of a tie.

Darn - that sounds like bad luck. I read on his blog about all the toasted head-gaskets.. I cannot imagine how that could be unless he does indeed have warped heads. I hope that he can get back in the game soon, but it sounds like some very touchy machining is going to be needed to true it up if they can do it without removing too much metal.

What can be causing Daryl's head gasket problems. Isn't that normally an indication of excessive heat or possibly carbon build up on the top of the piston? I've never had that problem before myself.

This is really getting exciting for me. ;D I love following the Cannonball Run when there's someone riding it that I know. That makes it all the more interesting. Plus there is the bit of mystery to it all.

I think the Cannonballers get a day's rest in Sturgis. Me thinks Darryl and Team 52 with be sawing out some 0.060 copper head gaskets for the R52.

I've been trying to figure out the route they will be taking from Fortuna to Cotati to make the 240 miles. There are a few different ways they could go and they are very different routes for sure. So I guess I'll just have to meet up with them in Cotati rather than trying to ride a ways with them.
Hopefully Darryl will have his piston problems fixed in Burns, OR, and be able to ride the rest of the way. It's sad that he's had these problems with the bike. But he's meeting great people and getting in some great riding anyway.

Yesterday didn't go quite as planned for me and not at all for Darryl.
My friend and I were going to ride out to see if we could find the Cannonball Run, but his bike was having trouble on the way to my place and he ended up taking it to our mechanic. They worked for an hour trying to figure out why it was missing, but it wasn't to be. So, I picked him up in my car and we took off to Hwy 1 to see if we could find them.
It was a fantastically beautiful day, but no sign of any vintage bikes. I guess they went a different way to go inland. Darn. So we headed back and went to Cotati to Michael's Harle- Davidson where they were finishing up the day. They had it set up great with all the vintage bikes right at the front. We made our way to the back where the cars were parked and actually found a place to park. Lots of people everywhere.
There were all these wonderful vintage bikes that made it all the way from New York. Henderson, BSA, BMW, Harley-Davidson, Indian, and some I wasn't sure of. I've got pictures.
But I was only seeing 2 BMW's. And neither were Darryl's. We were talking with one of the Cannonball Riders and I mentioned that we were looking for him. He said "He crashed. Up on the Avenue of the Giants." At that point I was hardly hearing what he said, except that he's okay except for a broken ankle. Seems that he was leaned over in a curve and caught the foot board which sent the bike down a hill. He stayed up on the top but the bike went down and was caught by a tree. :o :(
OMG!!! I was completely caught by surprise with this news. He said that he was scraping his foot boards (I'm not sure if this is the right term) too and decided to slow down a bit and talked with others who did the same.
Now, this is all hearsay. Until Darryl actually posts his story we won't know for sure what happened. I'm sure this is true though as these guys would definitely keep each other updated if anything happened to any of them. And I did check the stats for the Cannonball Run this morning. It shows Darryl having completed 79 miles. That would be just about right.
On a more upbeat note, I did get a bunch of pictures. I will get them posted after I get them downloaded from the camera.
I'll be thinking of Darryl and wishing the best for him until we hear from him.

I've been following the story on the MOA website. Really a shame. Darryl overcame a lot of adversity and just kept trying to keep his bike going.

Heal up and don't over-do things too quickly, Darryl! Even though you weren't able to ride the bike to the finish line, you're still a winner to us, and we've all immensely enjoyed going along for your grand adventure.
