Hello there. Padmei here from New Zealand.
Just joined here as I have some 65 questions. I have been a long time oldscool member however I was after a few quick answers or directions from the 65 crew.
I have had a 1991 R80GS for a few years that I have taken apart & rebuilt things & learnt alot about airheads.
I have recently bought a wrecked 1981 R65 twin shocker. I originally bought it for a spare gearbox for the GS however after looking at the engine & starting it up I thought I'd like to get it back running & cafe it or use as a track bike.
Before the purists get upset it was a real wreck & over here they aren't very popular - at least mine will be back on the road!!
Anyway I have bought a cheap still registered R65 mono frame & an old twin shocker subframe which apparently fits (going to look in a few minutes to make sure). Is there an easy to find thread about the shared parts between a 65 & normal mono bike like the GS.
I take it the engine is the same apart from the conrods, pistons, barrel & outwards? The carb looks the same as the R80GS as do the airbox electrics etc.
Is the clutch different?
I am aware of snowbums, duanes & antons sites but thought a paragraph answer may be all is required
Thanks in advance

Hi padmei !!!
Everything up to the drive shaft, should be the same, not real sure about the drive shaft and final drive, as the mono frames and twin shock frames, are different .
Most things across the airhead line, from the '81 model year up to the end of airhead production in 1995 are pretty much interchangeable, the R65 had some model specific parts .
There are a few members here, that have gone the cafe style or off road style, one is in NZ, user name Motu .

You can look on the carbs for a series of numbers - these numbers identify the carb size and jet size (Assuming that they are still as from the factory) BMW tweaked the carb jets sizes and needle clip positions frequently - I'm not sure on the monolever models but during the twin shock R65 era, the difference between the R65 carb and the R80 for some years was simply a clip position and 1 size larger jet.
