I've been thinking about this for a while now..
We need to have some kind of a rally so we can get together, Ride, Wrench, Drink responsibly, Swap lies, And Drink responsibly.. Oops, did I say that twice ?
So I was thinking maybe S.E. Oklahoma, in the Broken Bow area.
Do the Talimena drive and both sides. That sounds like fun...
Looking for some input and ideas. I'm thinking a ride is in order..
Maybe the Queen Whilimena Lodge for a weekend ?

I in for this also.

I could definitely do this. Could be fun. I'll even toss ol' Bengt Phorqs name in the hat.
But be advised, the Queen Whilimena Lodge is closed for extensive and lengthy renovations. The camp grounds are open but they ain't air conditioned.
Mena, Arkansas, anchors one end of the Talimena Skyway and is a pretty cool town. Very biker friendly. Talihina, Oklahoma, on the other end, is a small village but does have Pam's Hateful Hussy Diner. A fine eatery with great pies... unless Bengt gets there first.
Might be other locations, I dunno.
See what you can figure out, John.

Broken Bow has a lot of cabins and that kind of stuff..
I'm going to look at the hotel situation there as well..
The only thing I don't like about Mena is it's in a dry county.

Good thoughts, John.
Southeastern Oklahoma does have some pretty country around Broken Bow and Beavers Bend.

I've stayed in Broken Bow before at Microtel - nice rooms and reasonable. The 'Trail is great, not in the same league as the Dragon but still a nice ride that will keep the blood flowing without wearing you out.
-
Definitely something to think about. Of course it depends on the dates that are selected. Should be some decent campgrounds around in that area. I actually prefer the Talamena to the Dragon. There are no scenic views or pull offs on the dragon. Oh, and did I mention my avatar was taken on the Talamena Skyway by Mrs. Phorqs?

I game for meeting a some camp grounds. But lets not limit to this. Some do not like to camp so I have no problem with a motel.

Motel No-Tells usually have ice machines! Keeps the beverages properly chilled. 8-)

Let's look for a Cabins / Campground type of thing then... I'm not really big on camping myself these days... I hurt too much when I try to sleep on the ground....
If we can keep the price reasonable then we'd probably get better attendance as well...
As for the date.. That'll need some thought as well, I'd like for it to be a reasonable riding temp....
8-)
Bring on the ideas.. I just started this thing...

Just pick a date and let see what happens. Where I work we do 4 10 hour days so I have a 3 day weekend. It normally is not a problem on getting away.

I hope I can make it up there. Its quite a drive there but I'll try to convince ALL the rest of the R65 owners in town to go with me, if you don't mind hearing some mexican tall stories.

Vying to become the World's Next Most Interesting Man? Ah, I love a good Dos Equis! "His French never needs to be pardoned." We haven't heard any dates yet, but if you're passing through the MetroMess I'm sure we could meet up and get a head start on some of the tales from the Rio Grande. Lord knows Monte has his share of whoppers. 8-)

Monte, Bengt: Ill try to convince Don Julio to come ride with us. He can provide some inspiration regarding tales, tall or short. I don't usually drink but when I do I drink Bohemia. http://www.bmwr65.org/htdocs/yabbfiles/Smilies/bmw_smiley.gif

Did this idea die a natural death?

Did this idea die a natural death?
I think it's a dynamite idea, I'm just a lil too far west to make a plan. From Southern Ca to OK is 1350 miles of nothing but nothing.( I drove it in a car 3 times last year, I recognize nothing when I see it!).
I would be up for it, but the stars would have to align to make it work so that make me a a real weak maybe. Not much to count on toward a plan.
-
Hope the idea remains alive and riding.
-
No, The idea hasn't died.. Just brewing....
An exploratory ride to the area might be in order...
Wedding anniversary this weekend.. Friends wedding next weekend kind of puts me a few weeks off a a little side trip...
I'm thinking of some kind of early fall gathering.. Before it gets cold..
Maybe about the time the leaves are turning.. That would give everyone who wants to come plenty of prep time...
I'm looking for ideas... Got any ?

I've been looking over some cabins and campgrounds... All I can say is $150 per night for a two person cabin is a little steep...And that was the cheapest one... Somebody's makin' some cash down there...
For that kind of money we might as well try to find an open weekend at the Talimena Lodge...

As mentioned before, the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge is closed for extensive remodeling and upgrades. Campground remains open.

I ain't sleepin' on the ground!!! Hopefully I'll have enough vacation saved up to make this as my company made me burn all my sick-days and vacation before my STD kicked in. I also have to burn a few days in September for wife.gov's family reunion. It would really rock if the two events could be in the same week as Broken Bow is about a third of the way to the reunion...

I've been wanting to make a trip to the Talimena. I was born in Mena, Ark and have family there still. Haven't been back there in TOO many years! I'd love to have a reason to put it on my schedule this year.
