Title: Photo Gallery Comments Thread
Post by: Rob Valdez 79 R65 on February 17, 2011, 12:50:19 AM
Apparently Justin wanted to make his announcement about the improvements to the Coppermine photo gallery locked, which is fine with me, but now I have a need to have a place to ask questions and hopefully get answers.
I also stuck his thread in the stickies so it wouldn't get lost.

I'll start the discussion in the next post....

I just got a request for registration by a username "jibbonpoint".
Looks suspicious to me, but not the usual gibberish the average spammer puts in his Coppermine profile.
For instance:

Username         jibbonpoint
Joined       Feb 17, 2011
Location       Sydney, Australia
Interests       Mtorcycles
Occupation       engineering manager

Please respond here or in a PM, and tell me your forum username.  I am NOT going to authorize this user until I get a response.

Thank you.

I got Graeme's PM, and he is now registered. :)
Things are going smoothly!

I have filtered out 3 new spammers, so far! :D

Rob, I don't envy you the job.  These guys are such a PITA.  I get them over at the Vintage club's website and on the slash2 email list, too.  All they want to do is drop their links so that Google will find them and think that this valuable community is recommending their site, to boost their traffic.  They are pathetic leeches.

I have a new request, but I don't recognize the name.

Username       PeterPanon
Joined       Feb 17, 2011
Location       Nacogdoches
Interests       Mobile phones PDA
Occupation       M1A2 Tank Driver
Biography       Grandpa X2

Nacogdoches, Texas?
Since his interests only include "Mobile phones PDA", and his occupation is driving a military vehicle, I have to assume this has a 80% probability of being spam.

Nacodoches, Texas is in eastern Texas .

It's considered the oldest city or town in Texas .

M1A2 is the military designation for the Abrams tank .

Yes Bob, Google told me all of that.

I suppose a grandfather of two could still be driving tanks for the armed services...

I don't know if an e-mail is sent to a user of the photo gallery when I delete them in the approval process, so if you are a genuine forum member, and you are having trouble getting registered, let me know - I may be seeing you as a spammer.
I just killed 6 usernames that tried to register in the last 5 hours.

Good golly, Rob, when do you sleep?

Thanks for the extra hours on our behalf. [smiley=beer.gif]

Well, I didn't delete them 6 different times, I have begun saving them up until there are several to do at once - maybe once  a day.  My e-mail (Gmail) shows what time the requests come in, which is where I got the 5-hour figure.

I just killed another batch of about 7 - it took less than a minute!

My skills are great for the free stuff - but when it comes to something that people will PAY me for, I'm afraid I have none that are marketable.  :'(

My mainframe career is coming to and end, soon, and I will be forced to look for work in an entirely new industry (http://www.arbys.com/index.php).

OK - I created a dummy logon, and then deleted it from the queue.
I did not get ANY emails before or after the delete, so if anyone wonders why they are not getting registered, they will need to contact me, as I am pretty much deleting all of the new applicants unless I recognize their name and they have reasonable information in their profile.

I see that you have registered, and your account is active.  You registered on 2 Sept, 2009; and last visited 17 Feb, 2011.

If you would like, I can delete you and you can re-register, to see if that helps.  I see you have no images posted, yet, so no harm would be done.

Well, lets see.

1) Logon
2) Look for the link at the top-right that says "Upload File".  Click on it.
3) To load from your hard drive, click on one of the "Browse" buttons.
4) Find the picture you want to upload and click on it.
5) Click on "Continue" at the bottom.
6) It will tell you if your upload was successful or not.  If it was, click on "Continue" again.
7) It will ask you which album you want to put the photo in.  But now I am stuck.  I don't see an option for creating a new album!  I only have one, and I dump everything in there.  Some people have several, and are organized with them.

I will have to create a new user name and figure this out.  >:(

OK...I am seeing something on my test logon that I DON'T see with my regular one!
(Yes, Justin - I am leaving Admin mode, and I still don't see these buttons!)

Near the top are four grey buttons.  The important one is "Create/order my albums".
You have to have an album created before you can upload a picture.

These are the buttons I am talking about:

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pbase.com%2Ftomfarr%2Fimage%2F132826153%2Fmedium.jpg&hash=2ecbe9d97b9a850425b3192d751a09adfe8dcb11) (http://www.pbase.com/tomfarr/image/132826153/original)
click for larger

After you have created an album, when you upload a picture it will ask you which album you want to put it in.  Select your album and click "Continue".  It should work.

It's a bit of a hassle, keeping the gallery spammer-free, but it is a lot easier to do them as they try to register than it is to clean them out after they have crapped all over the place.

And getting those e-mails in my in box makes me feel wanted!  ;D

I have a new user request from someone named "andy", but we have several forum members with that name.
Please verify that you have put in a request "andy" and I will activate your Coppermine account.

If you get deleted or have any other questions, either PM me or communicate here.

Thank you.

It has to be said though, when you look at some of these photo's the comments often attached to them have no meaning whatsoever to the photo in question.

It seems to me that there is a lot of garbage being added.......

As I have been deleting spammers on there lately, I see that a lot of them have made comments.
I just did a clean-up, and I realized I have not been deleting their comments.

I'll spend some time tonight and see if I can't find them and delete them.

Thanks for the heads-up Steve.  Valuable feedback.

I have reset the configuration so that new registrants have to be approved by me before they can upload or comment.
Just more email for me.  I can live with it.

I just did a purge of the user database so our membership is now much smaller...  I whacked everybody that had never logged in after registration and those who had no posts and not logged in for 6 months or more.

You would be referring to the Forum user database, not the Coppermine - correct?
