Title: First post, hi everyone
Post by: mikebrisband on July 08, 2011, 07:29:36 PM: Hi eveyone, i have just bought myself my first Beemer and am very excited about getting it back into shape.

I know nothing about working on them, i had Ducati Pantah 600 about 20 years ago which i did up (clean and paint) but nothing mechanical really which was fun.

This one has been sitting around for quite some time so hopefully most of the things to be done are maintenance/restore rather than replacement. It's a one-owner and has done 48000K so hopefully it should last me a while.

If anyone has any advice on where to start, what to watch out for, good suppliers of stuff (eg needs a battery) in Aus that would be much appreciated.

You people all seem very knowledgeable and friendly, i'll keep you posted and no doubt will have more questions.

My best advice if you are looking for parts is to watch e bay as much as possible.
The group here are great and very helpful.
Are you going to restore it to original or are we going to see some creativity?

Plenty of your countrymen on here so local help may be close by.

Purchase a manual from Clymer and / or Haynes. Study the lubrication charts, then change all fluids, oil filter, brake fluid, the works. You will establish a maintenance baseline for future services.

Check valve lash, points condition and gap, spark plugs and tires. If the bike has been laid up for a lengthy period, fresh rubber would be a good idea.

Drop the float bowls and check for water and crud. Perhaps flush the fuel tank and see what washes out.

Other maintenance checks and chores remain but we've filled your dance card for now.

Brisbane! AAAAHHH. Was there a couple of years ago, actually a bit south of there in Tugun. Now I'm stranded in Germany with rain and cloudy skies. future goal is to eventually retire in Australia like my dad has.

Bike looks good. Not sure about the fairing. I had a little cafe style fairing on mine and took it off. Never realized how nice it is to ride in clean undisturbed air. Even as small as the cafe fairing was I had some buffeting and more wind noise. IMO the R65 make the perfect base for a naked cafe style bike.

Seems like I read a post not long ago where someone had a link for a parts supplier in Australia. Thought I had saved the link but it might have been on my work computer. I'll check next week and post you if I find it.

I hate the fairing, it's just butt-ugly, the previous owner's kept all the original lights etc so that will be the first thing to go. Rather get wet than live with that monstrosity, ugh!

Justind, you have done an incredible job on your cafe, it looks great! Certainly something to aspire to.

48K, gezz thats just ran in mate. Yeah iam with you on that fairing its just awful but iam sure the last owner put it on for a reason, each to there own.
