FYI -
on the recommendation of Justin B. of the R65 forum  (see Important Topics) i picked up a new battery from Staab

AND it works SO much better than my 4 or 5 y.o dying wet battery.

haha!

...definitely a fair price, and it fit no problem.
  
i actually added about 1/2" of foam on the front side of the battery to make the fit a little more snug in the battery box.

I've got three of them, the oldest is two years old, spent six months in the '81 R65, last eighteen months in the oilhead, no issues with them so far .
