Title: Born again Biker
Post by: daddychubby on March 15, 2009, 04:07:06 PM
Hi I am from the UK and just getting back into Biking. I am 64 and on the small side but reasonably strong. I chose an R65 mono as I always envied the users of BMW.s. My bike was built in Aug 1988 and when I bought it , it was not a goer. The engine would start sometimes but when it did only on the right hand cylinder.  Its nearly all back together now. Any way enough of that next weekend all being well it will be on the road.
My current problem is changing my password on this forum? I just do not seem able to find the right page. Help required please.

Hi and welcome daddychubby who is really on the smallish side!! Nice to hear from someone else at the beginning of the baby boomer generation...I guess you came just a smidgen before me. So many resources and new friends here on this forum that you will thank yourself forever for joining and also for getting your BMW R65 mono!!!

Thanks everyone for being so welcoming. Also for the tip on how to change the password. At my age it gets difficult remembering passwords and the one given did not stand a chance of being recalled from memory.
Well as I said the bike progresses. Got a replacement Carb today that makes a big differance now it starts well and fires on both barrels. Got to wait for the seat though it needed reupholstering so having a proper job done. Will not be ready till next week. Let everyone know when its done and will get the camera out for some pictures. Thanks again.

It's always good to hear of another person  who, like myself, is returning to motorcycling after after many years on four wheels.  It's especially good to hear that you are also bringing another R65 back onto the road that hasn't been running for a while.  Whatever you need to know you can find out here, plus a lot of stuff that you need to know that you didn't even know you needed to know! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
Looking forward to seeing a pic of that bike...

Welcome, daddychubby! (It's best not to use the abbreviation "dc" here in the former Colonies because it generally has another meaning that's not always positive.  ;D  I predict that you'll like this group a great deal more than other BMW owner groups. They know a lot (and *much* more than I do), but they aren't arrogant about it. And they're fun!

When I read your profile, I thought someone had copied mine. Both my bike (built 10/80) and I are slightly earlier vintage, but otherwise the similarities are eerie. I'm compact enough that I shopped for an R65 as the BMW most likely to permit me to flatfoot while mounted, and I'm *still* planning to try shorter shocks to lower the bike. Like you, I didn't ride for many years and returned recently. Thankfully, I found a mechanically and cosmetically exceptional R65 at a BMW dealer and decided that peace of mind and immediate gratification compensated for the relatively high price the dealer asked.

Then fate delayed me — this past June I began a series of eye operations. By the time I recovered, cold weather had commenced, and the bike was on battery-tender life support. Result: I've had to postpone my fun.

Incidentally, you have a bike that's probably rare in the US. I've read that the 1987 mono was the last R65 officially imported and sold through dealer channels, and there were only a few hundred 1987s. (I don't know for certain because I wasn't riding then.)

Best wishes and good luck with your restoration project.

John

Welcome from cloudy but almost sunny Northern California.   Lots of experience here and someone will be able to answer any questions you have or at least point you in the right direction.

And yes, we are a fun group - great folks here.   I have a feeling that there are a lot of us in that same age group.   We're finally getting to where we realize we'd better do the things we want to.

And we do like to hear about your rides and see pics.
 8-)

Welcome aboard from another "Senior".  I bought my "Mono" a little over a year ago when I had just turned 64.  It had been many decades since I was on two wheels.  Glad to hear of another "Mono" being recalled to duty.

Post pictures when you can.

Best,

Ed

Hello from wiltshire.

This is an excellent forum, I lurk here often.

But I have another UK based forum for you to try also.

It is not R65 specifiec, but all BMW's generally - although not affiliated with any club in particular.

They meet up regularly, so when things get moving, you can join them if you want.

http://www.redsoket.com/

Many of us are members of multiple forums - so nobody will mind ;)

Cheers

Welcome aboard.
Do you ride with Ulysses at all, I notice the UK has a chapter.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ulysses-uk/

Here in Darwin they get together to go for a ride every Sunday. I haven't got to one yet, but am intending on going as soon as I manage a Sunday morning free. At 45 I'm only considered a JUNIOR member.

Ulysses is a club for older motorcyclists - whether they've been riding 50 years, can't ride any more, or just starting out - to get together for companionship and mutual support, to show by example that motorcycling can be an enjoyable and practical activity for riders of all ages, and to draw the attention of public and private institutions to the needs and views of older riders.

Any lady or gentleman who is over the age of 40, and who holds or is aiming for a current motorcycle licence, or who is a regular partner of such a person, is eligible to join. Until you reach the grand old age of 50, you will be known as a "junior" member

Maybe in the past — but now the theft action here has moved to Wall Street and our megabanks and insurance behemoths, who have adeptly picked the pols' pockets (and ultimately, all of ours).  >:(

Well its good news folks. I am on the road. The R65 sailed through its MOT inspection last Friday. I only had to tighten 2 nuts on the handle bars and change 2 bulbs in the indicators to the correct wattage. Then it was fully roadworthy. I then Insured it and paid the road Tax and yesterday went for a little ride about 60 miles but it was fun. I will need to take extra care for a while as apart from being off bikes for a few years the R65 is by far the biggest bike I have owned. I will get some pictures taken as soon as I can but I must say its not cosmetically great but it is functional. It needs a little prettying up to make it look better. All in good time though.

Nice!
I do like the Mono shock model. I'd almost trade my LS for one. Looks like you'll maybe be shopping for a new shock unit? Love the LS style pipes and I'm jealous of the left hand switch pod, yours has the headlight switch built in. US models are blanked out there. Looks like it could use some touch up and attention to the wonky directional but all in all a very nice bike. Did I say I really like the Mono?

Very nice, DC!   Thanks for the picture.  If you would like to add the R65 logos to the battery covers, let me know.

Handsome scooters, these "Monos".

Yes you are right Ed I am already looking for another shock absorber. The problem is to make the bike easier for me to handle at slow speeds I want to lower the ride height at the same time.  The indicator light is slightly out but I have a replacement just not a major problem so it takes a low priority. Went out again today and I must say I find the handling great, It just seems so light when on the move and accelerates well also. I am well pleased.

Welcome to our merry, aging band of bikers!

Geez~you guys are making me feel like a youngster!  Thanks!

Welcome daddy-o.  I like the white!  Have you figured out the which shocks to use yet?  I am also vertically challenged and had the dealer put shorter shocks on mine before I even took it home.  Way back then I used Konis.  I've heard good things about the Hagons on this forum, though.  I haven't kept up with what's available these days.

Another thing you can do - oops, you've already had the seat redone, haven't you?  I took a few inches out of the seat - that make the biggest difference for me in reaching the ground.

Glad to hear you're enjoying being back on the road.  I think you've picked the perfect cycle to reenter the exciting world of motocycling!
