Hi all, been looking on here for a couple of weeks. I dont have an r65 but I do have an r45, which will either become an r65 through time or be replaced by an r65 so the 45 can be turned into an r48, i.e an r45 withan 800 engine fitted.
will be picking your collective brains over the months for best mods

I think we only have two other members here with R45's, not a very common bike here in North America .

They are not very common over here either, mine lives alongside a k1200lt and an r1100gs, and its the most used,its pathetically slow BUT I smile every time I ride it. Its just like when you first started to ride, you always wanted more speed.

We've got a member here (username Mick) from Kinghorn, Fife, Scotland, that rode his '81 R65 round the world, (except for the watery areas) .

Welcome Davie ...Kelso Kelso do you go to the Annual Country music bash there? friends of mine keep inviting me up there , to date ive resisted but if theres a Airhead to be visited that may swing it....Barry is your man for the r45,s no doubt he will chip in soon.

Welcome Davie,
Good to see another R45 owner. R45's are identical to R65's in every respect except for cylinder bore size, carb size, final drive ratio and speedo ratio so most spares are interchangeable.

... and how did you know I'd just parked the R45 a few minutes ago after a cold wet ride home from work. I can't say it was much fun and not what was forecast at all but that wasn't the bikes fault.
... and now I'll have to clean it again. :-/

Airhead speedo's like most others are reckoned to be optimistic except the North American 85 MPH version which is supposed to be close to spot on.
Truth is I have never checked mine other than to observe RPM vs MPH at different speeds according to the chart below. On that basis and if the rev counter is accurate (a big IF perhaps) my speedo is not too bad reading 5 mph high at 60 MPH.
Airhead speedos are matched to the final drive ratio fitted to the bike so you might want to check you have the correct one fitted. On the lower part of the speedo face you should see W1441 which is correct for a 3.89:1 final drive ratio. I read somewhere that the W means 'Wegsteckenzahl' ('travel-distance-index-number'), which equals the number of rotations for 1 mile.
BTW I calculated that if you multiply your final drive ratio by 370 it should give you the correct speedo ratio. Can anyone check their speedo and confirm if I am close with that figure.

Hi Barry thanks for the chart , I spent ages looking for one but never found one. Now looking at the revs=speed,my speedo doesnt seem so bad, havind said that a while back the mileage & trip on mine started working again but at a greatly increased rate i.e going to work is 20 miles and the mileage would increase by maybe 60 miles, but as the mileage increases this has lessened,and now looking at your chart at 4000rpm my speedo reads 60mph whereas when I got the bike it was nearer 70 so maybe this has been the problem?

The chart is something I knocked up on an Excel spreadsheet. It's all simple maths with the only potential error being the tyre fitted. I measured the exact rolling circumference of a standard 4.00 X 18

Hi all,
Purchased a 1982 R65 from the original owner who is now 72 years old. Has 9,000 miles and appears to be in pretty good shape. I look forward to learning more about the bike.

Congrats on the new bike! I just purchased mine last week.
Why don't you create a thread when you have a minute, with a few pictures of your bike. I'd love to see a 9,000 mile example!

Hi semper gumby, must say my r45 is not original and definately not clean. Its my winter hack and ride to work bike,just now its parked outside under a foot of snow. mind last winter I didnt go near it for 3 weeks as it was up to the mirror glasses in snow , when the snow melted I drained the float bowls turned the fuel and ignition on and it started first touch of the button, my k1200lt will not do that it needs the battery taken out to stop the immobilizer flattening it, dont you just love modern technology ;)
