Any of you planning on attending the rally?
I plan to be there.
-
I believe that there are several of our west-coast contingent that plan to be there. I know that I'm not going as I can't take as much time off as I'd want to ride out&back, and that's the only way I want to go to a rally.
I am going to be at the BMW RA rally in Pownal Vermont July 30-Aug 1.
-
I know what you mean - I already rode my K75 out to Los Angeles and plan to flyout a few days before the rally to ride up the CA coastline and then veer east to Central Oregon.
The ride home to MN will take at least 3 days. But I've always had a great experience at the MOA Rally's
-
Yes! I'm going. Finally got pre-registered online last night.
My friend and I will be leaving Sonoma County on Sunday, May 11, and slowly wend our way up the coast to Arcata where we go inland along the Smith River and up the Siskiyous to Grants Pass , then up and over by Crater Lake to Hwy 97. From there I'm not sure yet the best way to bypass the straight and narrow 97. There's got to be some nice side roads around there. We're going to take it slow, make lots of stops and see the sights.
I'd like to get there early Wednesday so we can do some early volunteer work.
I'll have my cell phone. All of us who are going should exchange cell phone numbers so we can get together and have an R65 gathering. I'll have the flag for the requisite photo shoot. 8-) If I have any other ideas of how to meet up I'll post it here.
There are some others from Oregon who will be there. Anyone else from California?
-
I live in MN but rode my K75 to CA, my hometown. I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to ride up the CA coast. Your route to Oregon sound really like a nice way to go.
-
Decided not to go that far this year. Sorry to miss Melena and Ed and Chris BC and Ken. Planning to attend the Pownal BMWRA though on the Civic weekend. Be seeing Mike!!!
Maybe be checking out Micatech then for the Triumph Bonneville hardcases. I know they would probably look way too big but i gotta see. Micatech in Hillsboro NH not really that far from Pownal VT. if you say it fast. And they will be at the RA rally anyway for an initial look see.
Latest news is David my riding bud for the outwest ride in '07 has a final drive problem for the second time on his 2000 R1100RT. So even he will possibly NOT be at Redmond. He has planned the 4 corners of the USA IBR for 2 years now. The final drive stopped him last year after W. Va. BMWRA rally. Discovered lots of metal shards :owhen draining final drive oil in preparation for trip last Sunday. :'(
-
It will be nice to see you in Vermont, Sue !
My cousin Dean might also be there - not sure yet - he has been rather uncommunicative lately. We may have some other east coasters there also - maybe even some folks from down Carolina way?
-
Melena,
Look forward to meeting you and others. My cell is 612 7438681. Please call or text me a place where we can all meet.
We should find a time to meet and talk R65's.
If any of you know Matthew Parkhouse - he writes a regular Airhead column in BMW MOA magazine - he told me he will be having a booth at the swap meet and will also be conducting a workshop on troubleshooting electrical system on Airheads (think I should go (just kidding).
-
Sigh. It's on my calender. I was hoping to have my Triumph done and painted to ride it, but I'm toiling away (on "vacation") to redo the floors of a big part of my house, so I will likely be on the R65.
Oh no! Ride a BMW to the rally?! If I must.
I hope we can all hook up for conversation and photo ops and stuff.
-
I'm planning on attending, although I have not yet registered. My new to me LS is in a gazillion peices however, so I will be riding over on a red Japanese plastic bike, probably Friday evening. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you nutcases and ogling some neat machines. I suspect the cell phone/texting route is the way to go....I nominate Melena as social coordinator. Everybody call her! ;D

Thanks! ::)
Okay. I'll go for it. :) All who want to meet, PM me your cell phone number and I'll PM you mine. I'm starting a list to enter into my cell phone. (how do I get myself into these things? ;D ) If you want, I can then PM everyone's cell phone numbers to all the others.
Ken, I have yours.
-
I have three numbers in my cell phone that start with 'R65'!
Sue, NotsofastEd, and Semper Gumby! :)
-
Pleased to be counted amongst your friends, Rob!!
Maybe we easteners can make a flag occasion at the RA then? Nice trip excuse for our Carolinians to ride north on the VA. part of the Blue Ridge Pkwy!!!
-
Whew! The time is closing in fast! Just a week from now I leave for Redmond! Woo Hoo! We'll figure out who to get the flag to next after the MOA Rally.
Sorry I'll miss meeting you there Sue. Sounds like you've made a good decision though. The RA Rally sounds like fun too. Maybe those of us at Redmond can try to hook up by cell phone with some of you on the East Coast at some point while we are there. I've got some of your cell phone numbers. ;)
-
I will be in Redmond next week as well. I just PM'd Melena with my contact info. Leaving Saturday morning. I won't be on the R65, it will have to nap in the garage until I get back. It's younger brother GS gets the call on the long trips anymore - it has longer legs. Everyone have a safe trip!
Neal
-
Melena, I will be working at the Vintage Display (in the Beef Barn). That might be a good place to meet.
My cell # is 831-359-8178 (if you want to exchange numbers, just text me something and I'll save your number).
I'm leaving on Tuesday, but I'm driving up in my little pickup so I can bring a couple old bikes... alas, the R65 will not be among them, not enough room.
-
Ever had cabin fever in the summer time? Man, this being grounded and not being able to ride has got me feeling like a hunting dog in a pen. I'm glad you folks are able to go to the rally. Ya'll better take lots of pix and post them so we can see what we're missing.

Oh, Mike... Waa, waa, waa :'(
I know for a fact you've been chillin' in your pool, plus several Shiner Bock beers are MIA at the crib. And there's work being done on your herd.
Life is good, pardner. Heal up and meet me on the Three Sisters in August. We'll make up for your down time.

Great idea Darryl! I just may be camping over that way.

Poor Mr. Phorqs. I don't mean to be redundant, but..........[smiley=nopity.gif]
Wait a minute! A pool and beer? And you're trying to get us to feel sorry for you? [smiley=rolleyes.gif]
Well, I'm sure you'll make it up later. But it is too bad you guys from Texas can't ride out to the West and visit our wide open spaces. [smiley=Oscar.gif]
Really, though, I'm just getting excited about actually leaving on Sunday. I'm all packed and ready except for the little things that I forget about and have to go find to put on the pile.
And now I can't find my little R65 LED flaslight that Justin was so good to find for us. Darn. My favorite flashlight too. I haven't seen it since I got back from the 49er Rally. :(

Safe Journeys to the Redmond Rally & Looking Fwd. To Meeting You!
-
It looks like I'll head over on Friday. After all, it's only about a 3 hour ride.
I'm paranoid though, as yesterday I stopped on the way home, and the R65 wouldn't turn over. I was able to push start it, but it still wouldn't start when I got home. Then this afternoon I tried it and it worked fine. It's hard to trouble shoot a problem when it's not manifesting the problem. I'll go over connections tomorrow but I hope I can find a spare starter relay too.
-
Ed, I'll be looking forward to meeting up with you. Darn about the starting problems. If you make it to the rally and it doesn't start, there will be lots of people there who can help fix it. ;) But it's hard to start a trip with a problem like that. If, and it's a big if, you can't get it fixed, come on over in your car. It's okay to do that if your bike isn't working. We won't tell. ;)
I am headed out in the morning. It's a bit more than a 3 hour ride for me - More like 12 or 14 hours depending on traffic. I've been so busy getting things together so I can leave that I'm really looking forward to getting out of here and getting on the road. It will definitely be more restful. ;D
-
I am a bit apprehensive about riding the 45 down (the 'what ifs' keep popping into my head), but hey, isn't that what AAA if for?
But I took the bike on a nice, 60 mile ride today, and she ran like a champ. So, no more excuses, I'm packing up tonight and will head out early on Thursday.
~6 hour ride for me.
;D
-
Y'all have fun! I'm trying to decide on riding to Cape Code on a BSA. Looks hot the next week or so. I heard there was Snow in Canada?
(yikes)
-
It would be nice but i'm not confident that the r65 would make it that far, nor do I have the vacation time to dedicate to it.
I wish there were more airhead events in the AZ area.
-
I haven't heard of any snow..some golf ball sized hail stones which I guess if glued together would be sorta like snow. Maybe the high Arctic near the north pole has some but not for long. We've been in the 80's for sometime around Georgian Bay, ON. Lots of heat waves for us anyway all over the country except a lot of rain in Sask, my favourite province ;)

Am I the first one back???
I missed the Boxerworks meeting at the gate, but amazingly (for phoneless me) I did find Melena and she told me we were all meeting at 7:30 Sat. night, and we did! I met Melena, R65lust, Dee (and her R45) and somebody else with an R45, some guy (don't know if he's on the forum) with an R65 that he had converted to a GS, and probably others that didn't register. It was fun. When Melena gets home there will be pictures, and if my eyes are wet in the pictures it's just because we were staring into the setting sun.
I signed the flag (Why isn't Justin on it???) next to my cousin Monte's sig, and also signed the one Melena crocheted to send to our southern hemishere friends.
Sunday morning I had a chance to talk with Terry V., who is on this forum, and he told me some interesting things he's found on his newly acquired R65 (...or should it be R85?) but I'll let him share when he feels like it. He missed seeing the others.
I got to go to an airhead tech session on Saturday being offered by Mat Parkhouse and Joe Michaud (I'm not sure about how to spell his last name.) that tried to focus on electrics, especially relays. It was good. Basically I had a good time at the Rally, and good riding to and from it. Oh, and be ready to hug Melena when you meet her! :D
-
Great to meet (almost) everybody and see some cool bikes, even if it was only for a short time. Fun!
I made to the rally late Friday after everything closed, and planned to show up Saturday after a 200+mile ride and see the sights, but my Honda's fuel injection system had a short and it took all afternoon to figure it out. I showed up again after everything closed again, but I at least made the R65 meeting! Ride safely!
-
Howdy,Howdy,
Got back from Redmond yesterday afternoon and back at work (bummer). Had a good time at the rally and put more weight on. Was nice meeting some of the R65 group there. Some people just don't know what to think of my bike (Junior) as it is highly modified. :o They had a GS Anti concours event there and I won first place in the Airhead section in the "Most distracted" class". :D Meaning someone is really distracted when they see it. The world famous round the world GS rider/writer Helge Peterson presented me the big bronze medal and other memorabelia on the podium (plywood on top of barrells). So I was a happy camper. Prior to the Redmond rally I was putting the old R65 to work on the trails between Burns Or. and Redmond while I was on the Nez Perce Dual sport rally with about 40 others. Saw lots of pretty sights and got just as many mosquito bites! >:( Here is a shot of Helge standing in back of Junior.
-
Sounds like all the members that attended, had a great time !
Did the weather cooperate, the temps there on the east side of the Cascade mountains, can get quite hot this time of year !
-
Beautiful weather, lots and lots of bikes, met a bunch of great people, had too much Belgian Ale on Friday night (thanks to my friend Rolf, the Rok Strap guy) went to lots of cool seminars (learned four different ways to pick up a bike, learned how to use my GS-911 diagnostic tool, learned more than I ever wanted to know about oil and got to see a 1920's era BMW get fired up woo hoo!!!) discovered that the 45 is burning a half liter of oil every 100 miles (ugh!!!), but that she'll do 75 mph on the flats and even passed a semi truck going up hill!! ;D
I had a SUCH a great time, and meeting all the 65 folks was just icing on the cake. We really need to do this more often.
I took a boat load of pics, and hopefully the video stuff came out OK.
Bummed out because I didn't win anything. I was looking forward to a European riding trip. ::)
Now I get to clean the bike up and start reading up on engine rebuilds. Oh well.
-
Hey, DeeG, did we meet at all? Because I drank a fair amount of Rolf's beer as well, and I'm the one who gave the demonstration on starting a 1920s era BMW -- my 1928 R52. The old bikes were my excuse for not having the R65 there; I drove up in my pickup with the R52 and a 1953 R51/3 in the back.
I also ran into Melena in the beer garden a couple times and we had a very nice chat!

I do recall seeing you at Rolfs as I was wandering around. The spouse and I were there on Friday evening. Left the R45 at his place that night, his Belgian Ale ....yikes.....
And when you fired up the R52, it left me speechless. What a BEAUTIFUL bike!!! And I was thinking the same think as one of the other observers...how the heck to you find time to look up while your riding? I'd probably run into something.
We were camped just behind Melena and Larry.
-
Maybe somebody with pictures (Dee? Melena?) could start a thread in the ride reports section.
One of my sometimes riding friends, John, won one of the European tours. He went from being woke up by sprinklers on his tent that morning to winning a tour that evening, all in one day. I think he got tired out. I was camped by him but he didn't ride with us this trip.
-

You're right, the controls do keep you busy, and when I first started riding it, I spent a lot of time looking down at them.
Look at my hands in the photo above. Both are manipulating those thumb levers while I'm also doing the usual riding stuff. I rode the bike a fair amount on quiet roads around here before I dared to go out into any real traffic. The most difficult moments were when I had to go get gas -- I had to deal with a block's worth of traffic to get there.
I hung out at Rolf's Sprinter Friday afternoon, trying to stay out of the sun for a while. I was camped immediately next to the Vintage Display, where I spent most of my time. I barely got to see any of the vendors (which is probably a good thing).
I did win a Spot on Wednesday at the "Leadership Summit" for club leaders. That's probably the best thing I've ever won in a raffle.
-
Hey, Melena! I hear you met some friends of mine who were riding down here from Seattle at a rest stop. It's a small world out there!
-
Hi - the Rallly was great for me - Matthew Parkhouse did a Q&A session on the Airheads. Lots of good stuff and lots of airhead enthusiasts in attendance. I got to meet Melena, which was great but did not stick around Saturday - I bugged out on my K75 and took a detour through Glacier National Park in Montana - didn't get back home to MN until Wednesday afternoon but took time my time enjoying the sights.
Saw a bunch of R65's at rally including a real beater that had been up and back from Alaska and down into Costa Rica and back. This showed me why so many people are hot on the BMW brand - reliability, longevity, quality.
-

;D Yeah! I did. That kind of thing happened to me all weekend. We were just chatting about things and they said you were going down to Santa Cruz to see you. I about fell over when he said your name. What a small world indeed!
I hope they had a good time with you at MotoGP!!. I'm sure they did.

I think they did. I led them a merry chase around the Santa Cruz Mountains on Saturday. I rode the R65 and they had a hard time keeping up. I took them up to Alice's Restaurant and out to Pescadero and Bonny Doon.
Funny thing, though: one guy kept worrying about the oil level in his Kwacker and my friend on the GS, who is a BMW tech, looked and said it was fine, but he was still concerned. In the evening after the ride, this came up, and it turned out that everyone was concerned about their oil, because they could smell it occasionally during the ride. Well, my free bike weeps oil out of the cylinder bases and the pushrod tube seals, and it can be a bit ... aromatic ... when it gets warmed up.
I guess I will have to do a top end job on that bike sooner rather than later. But I'm having too much fun with it right now. :D
-

I have pictures from the rally, Rob. I'll be posting them later today in the ride report section.

Here's a shot at the top of Steens Mountain in South Central Or. just before the national. 9500 ft.!

Thank you, professor. I really like your tank panniers (brand?). If I weren't so enamored with my Krauser leg shields, I would have a set. I really like yours!
-
I really like your tank panniers (brand?).
I made em. Along with most everything else on it.
-
So, are those aftermarket frame braces beneath them, or are they part of the support structure?
The exoskeletons - did you weld them up and dip in plastic?
(BTW, a big [smiley=thumbup.gif])

That is a skeleton aluminum tube welded frame that holds the extra gas tanks with alluminum sheet metal covering. It's pretty light.
-
Ah - fuel tanks! I must have missed that thread. Again, impressive!
(I "buddied" you on ADV - though I rarely go there.)
Are there more pictures of your bike there or somewhere else? (here? ::) ) :)
-
Cool pictures! Great thread!
I miss being in the west!
(waaaaaaaaaaggh) :'(
