Title: The 18th Gathering of the Clans - 2010
Post by: Rob Valdez 79 R65 on March 25, 2010, 12:05:11 AM
Steve mentioned this to me on Facebook, so I looked at my calendar.
I've already got the "pre"-weekend scheduled off at work, for that weekend.
And it is one-day's ride for me. Two, if I want to take the [really] scenic route.

18th Gathering of the Clans, June 11-13

"No cell phone coverage in the hollar" middle-of-nowhere.

So . . . does this mean you're planning on going?  Inquiring minds want to know.  (And I can't quite tell from your post.  :P )
I might have to consider that one again if you are.

I'll be there, barring something catastrophic (like rain  ;D)

You guys need to start working on SC John as well.
Seems like this should be a mandatory run for highly placed R65.org officials.  ;)

...and Rob, those brand new saddlebags, with no cracks and modern 21st century construction, should make perfect beer coolers...

Rob. You got me all excited. I got the kilt out and had it pressed and ready to go. The Highland Gathering of the Clans is the following month right around the corner at Grandfather Mountain. Don't know if I would chance riding across the rural south of a German motorcycle wearing a kilt. I may never be seen again.  ;D

The Veg (of Boxerworks forum fame (and a MOA something-or-other) lives in Atlanta, sadly no longer rides an airhead :( , but likes to sport a Utilikilt!)  He hopes to make it, to help lessen his sadness of missing the MOA National.

Got tent? (have you ever camped on a bike trip, before?)

Don't mind a fairly steep incline into the campground?

Pack all food & drink you plan to consume, other than the rally-provided meals, of course.
There are places to buy stuff 1/2 hour (+) away (one-way).

They have showers and laundry facilities.

They have a fairly steep incline to get out of the campground! ;)

BTW, Yikes, I added you to...................

Thanks for the info, Rob.  I've done lots of backpacking, so I think I'm fairly well equipped, although my camping gear is even older than my cycle.  The Gathering is just the excuse I've needed to put some real miles under the wheels.  Should be a real nice trip - from Richmond- which you can find on the map, thanks to Rob! I is a'here!!! But unfortunately, I'm leaving for Alaksa on June 9th!! So the Gathering is out this year but next....???!! I had such a grand time in 2008 that it is well worth returning to see all my pals from the forum. You guys did see the new bike when it was in one piece too so that is impt. But LRB could outdo that ol' bike anyway!!

Have fun! Yikes should go for sure. Yikes it's me...suecanada from the Finger lakes Rally..remember??

The weather here is just starting to be rideable weather. What a great winter and Spring so far. Very little flooding and dry underfoot up the river. Only problem may be not enough water into the water table.

Hi to all my buddies!! Tomorrow I ride to get the new centrestand on the Bonnie. LRB sleeps but is twitching!

Wow, Sue..that's a trip!  How long are you going to take.  Although from where you are, it's much shorter than it would be for me...  :P

Which bike are you going to take?  And first and foremost - you're not going ALONE, are you????  Details, details, please.
Title: Re: The 18th Gathering of the Clans - 2010
Post by: suecanada on April 02, 2010, 08:56:24 AM
Well, Aïda and everyone, yup, Alaska starting June 9th. Going with my American MI friend Rich. He lives in MI that is where we always picked up our new gear. David, I and Eric met Rich at 'Huggy Bear Campground' (love that name) on the night before entering the Lima Ohio MOA National in '05. Been fast friends since. Rich went and sold his big BMW r1100RT 1996 to me way back in '06 and that's the bike I rode to Vermont. Anyway he rides a Heritage Softtail Classic Harley so we will NOT be doing any gravel. Forget the Dalton and Dempster and all roads that separate the men from the boys and limbs!!!

We have no time schedule to keep except we plan to be at Redmond OR on the opening of the BMW National on Thursday, July 15th. Tires are always a question...like where will we need them on US Territory so they are cheaper. There is no comparison, even with the dollar approaching parity! We will try to ride some n. CA roads for sure then head east.

I am riding the Bonneville even though LRB has much better gas range but I don't wanna put all those miles on him really and the Bonnie is new and fuel injected so better for hills and mountains 'they' say. LRB is slated for eastern North America!!! Derek and I just may go east to Cape Breton in late August. Derek in the van, Rich, brother and I on bikes. LRB goes then. Rich will be coming here to help celebrate the 50th year our family has owned a wee cottage in the Kawartha lake area of Ontario.

Richard from MI and I plan to camp a few days then motel it for rainy ones and to get a good shower and rest. So a combo plan.  The plan is he will ride up here to Meaford and we leave and go up and around Huron and cross into the USA at the Sault then follow the Upper Peninsula of MI west on that 28 Hwy. Keep going west on Hwy 2 till we reach Glacier NP in N. Montana then cross over just west of there. Up to Banff then Jasper on a really beautiful hwy then ' north to Alaska". Home via Redmond, n. CA highways and Parks. 5 weeks +/_!

No, Ed, I am not adding people until they request it.  I could not see the Frapper map, so I could not see who to add from that.  I mentioned this request thing on the map thread, I think.

June is so up in the air at the moment.  Chance are pretty good but I'm not confirming yet.

Nathan (Boxerworks-Service) is still chuckling about the last time we were all up there.  It would be nice to get up there and douse him with 10 gals Blue Gatorade when he is not looking!

Here is hoping.

Please don't look for me at the Gathering...

I am having surgery on May 21 to repair a couple of troublesome inguinal hernias.
I am lucky I have the whole next week plus Memorial weekend to rest up to get back to work.

I don't think I will even want to drive the car all that way just a week later. :(

Sorry for getting you folks all worked up about this.

Thanks for the well-wishes.

This thing has been bothering me for a few years now.  One surgeon chased me out a couple of years ago, making me feel like a whiny-boy.  It had really been bothering me lately (I even took a Vicodin for the pain, one night!), so I figured I should have it taken care of while I still have decent insurance.
This time, both my physician and the surgeon said it needed attention ASAP.  (The surgeon looks young enough to have kids in college....  ;) )

Today I bought myself a fancy remote-controlled fan for my bedroom, and I plan to get caught up on my reading since I don't have a couch, nor a 2nd TV in the bedroom.  I'm looking forward to it!  Sort of.

Good luck with the surgery, Rob!
Fortunately, the surgery now is generally an even quic!ker recovery than the procedure was even just ~15 years ago - they often now just"patch" you up with a kevlar type patch versus the more invasive & uncomortable procedure I had back in the 80s.  A friend of mine just had the surgery last Christmas and he was walking around town (though slowly) the next day.

Hopefull you'll soon be on a bike soon!

My "nurse" (my nephew's on/off girlfriend) convinced me to try taking two of my pain-killers as suggested on the label.  I had been trying to get by on one.  It really made a difference, but my head is shwimmin' a bit!  These are nice, kick-ass hydrocodone: 7.5-325!  With two of those fresh in me, I can get up and sit down feeling normal, pain-wise.

I hope John is doing O.K.  I'll find his thread as soon as I post this.

Does anyone have the information about this Gathering? It looks like I will be able to wangle a few days off and I want to try and make it. The link to the High Country Motorcycle Camp no longer works. I still have a general idea where it is but I'm sure it would be easy to miss it in those hills.

Yeah Marcmax, just go to the campground's website, and it'll give you pretty much all the details.
And even though it's basically 1 turn off of US 421, it can be a bit of a problem to find. Just follow the Roundel signs.
Once you know you're on the right road though, just keep going; it's a ways out in the boonies!

And checking their website, I see the domain has expired! I've seen this before, it's still on though.
Here's a general map to the place.

Tonight is my first night back at work!  It feels GREAT!

I was SO bored for 10 days (O.K., maybe 8) just sitting around the house waiting to get better.

But, I think it was an overall success.  I feel no pain where I did before surgery, and the pain from the operation gets less & less everyday.  I am taking maybe 1 pain pill a day.

So, who IS going to this one?  We haven't firmed up our plans for this weekend just yet.  NCSteve?  marcmax?  Yikes? Is that all? How about not-so-fast ed?

No Rob, No Bill, No John, No Sue ...  :'(

Me. Fritz & Ed from TVR, probably a few more from that group: you seen Fritz' R80ST? Joe and Pat. That's so far, anyway.

SC John was supposed to go, but wussed out... ::)

When I came back to work a week ago after being off 6 working days for my surgery (healing well, thank you - I already feel stronger.), I felt bad about taking off again this week, when I didn't have the motorcycle, the funds or even the energy to make the trip in the car, so I canceled my time-off, as we are really short-staffed here, and me working nights, am the least-loved to be covered...

I should see a shrink about this guilt-complex...

Sorry to report that I am not going to make it this year.  Just too many family obligations for me to check out for the whole weekend.  :'(

But for the first time since I've had my R65 - 'round 2-1/2 years - I am confident that the bike could do the trip with no worries.

I'd still like to do a trip to Willville sometime this summer.

Leaving in the morning, hope to hook up with the Roanoke boys and be established by noon or so.
Anyone still on the fence needs to get packed up and ready to ride!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Did anyone from here make it to The Gathering? I spoke to a couple of riders there that came on R65's but they didn't even know about this forum so we may pick up a couple of new members. I was camped down on the end farthest away from the showers but tried to meet as many people as I could. Not knowing what anyone looks like I may have walked right past and didn't even know it.

My R65LS made the trip without a hitch but I will say one thing. The cafe styling I did may look nice and be fun around town but its going to take a week to get the aches to disappear. Oh my aching _________ . You fill in the blank because no matter what you put in, it is sore.  :)

Looking forward to reading about it......maybe next year we all can get there again. Maybe we could get enough of us there to need a wide angle lense on our group/flag portrait!! :o

I was there, and counted at least 7 R65s, only talked to one owner who had heard of the board here. Met a guy named Billy who was excited about signing up here. And I ran into Just Gus too, he was there in '08 for our group shot.

Was that your beautiful gray custom LS down in the bottom land? Gorgeous!
I'll have pics of the rally up in a couple of days.

I just wanted to say that this was a very enjoyable event. Being my first BMW rally I don't have anything to compare it to but I will definitely do it again.

While I enjoyed the entire weekend the high point for me was when I was leaving on Sunday morning. I wanted to get an early start since I had decided to bypass the interstate and just travel secondary roads. That would turn a 6 hour trip into a 8-9 hour trip.

I packed everything Sat nigh except my sleeping bag and just spread out on a picnic table. Sunday morning when I woke you could hear the quiet sounds of people breaking camp and preparing to ride. Nothing like some other events I have attended with a lot of loud noise and engine revving.

It was something I will never forget. The sun was just starting to light up the valley and the mist was rising from the meadow. As I looked across the field I heard the soft pop-pop-pop of BMW exhaust and saw a string of about six headlights as a group of riders made their way out of the valley and on their way home. I just stopped and watched until they disappeared.

That is great imagery, Marc, and very glad you had a good time, but sorry we never caught up. Still hope you can get by Willville sometime this summer too.

Here's a few pics I took, including a few of (I hope) Marc's absolutely stunning LS. It's so nice I'm not sure I'd even ride this thing, just keep it under a soft cover at look at it on occasion.

Marc,
Great description of the early morning.  Makes me want to go to a rally.   ;D    Glad you had a great time.  That looks like a really beautiful place.  Nice pic of Airhead Central!

NC Steve,
Thanks for the pics.  Some very nice R65's there.

Thanks all for the nice comments on my LS but NC Steve it was meant to be ridden. I would feel awful if I just had it sitting there and looked at it every now and then. It is actually a treat to ride it and the more I ride it, the more I like it. This my first airhead.

I have been a "brick rider" for several years. My K75S is still my go-to bike if i know I am going long and fast. It is also my daily commuter. With a huge Shoei top case and BMW saddlebags painted to match the bike and the S fairing it is a pleasure to ride. I even do my weekly grocery shopping on it. I always love to see the look on peoples face when they see me pushing a loaded shopping cart to the K bike. They usually wait to watch and are amazed when I get it all loaded. Its all a matter of prior planning, even to the point of buying one brand over the other based on the shape of their package.

That LS is beautiful Marcmax..possibly the best LS I  have ever seen :o So tell me how did you packed all the camping gear etc??? Without obvious bags and mounts? My LS always looks like a baggage car on steriods!!!

Sorry to forget but what is the manufacturer of that 'S' fairing??? It looks high enough to actually shed the wind and yet very stylish!!

hard to say enough about the looks of your bike!!!

Hi Suecanada. The fairing is a Piranha from Firth Design Group and was made in the 70's. It was a lucky find and has been sitting on a shelf in the garage for the last five years waiting for the right bike. They still pop up every once in a while on fleabay.

As for the camping gear I am a long time back packer so I have learned to pack light. Behind the LS is my hammock hanging between the trees. Also behind the LS you can see the soft bags I use hanging in the tree. Between the soft bags and a magnetic tank bag I can pack enough to last a week on the road.

Thank you to everyone for all the nice comments on the LS but I need to make one thing known. I have more time and money invested in this bike than I could ever hope to recover. I had an image in my head of how I wanted it to look and over the last few years it slowly took shape. It all started as a project to spend time with my young son to teach him the how's and why's of working on a machine. I am only the caretaker of this bike. It becomes his when he is old enough.

How do you ensure that those soft bags don't rub the paint running along under the seat or interfere with the rear wheel? Also, I wonder how do you ensure that the over-the-seat rear strap doesn't contact the rear cowl paint, especially since the seat slopes down rearward? I guess the hump actually is to your advantage there.

What do you use when there are no trees for the hammock??? Bugs?

Inquiring minds, that want a light bike, need to know!! Love to hear about new approaches.

Cheers,
Sue

Hi Sue,

The bags do contact the painted surfaces but there are neoprene pads on the inside surfaces of the bags and all of the straps. Very soft and they help stop the bags from moving around as they don't slide around on the painted surfaces. Just have to check them thoroughly before putting them on and make sure there is no grit on the pads. Also the bags have a stiff back on the wheel side. The brand is Cortech. If they have they at a local bike shop they are worth looking into. They are designed to fit a sport bike and are the smallest of three sizes.

As for the hammock, with a little imagination there is always two points to tie it to. I have even strung it between a sign post  and a picnic table. All else fails just lay it on the ground as a ground cloth and plop the sleeping bag on top.
