Title: Busted Wing
Post by: Bengt_Phorqs on June 18, 2010, 08:17:45 AM
Just as the really good riding season was in full bloom I went and got bucked off in a low speed high side.  Ended up with a broken collar bone and a cracked rib.  The collar bone doesn't hurt but the rib is a bit aggravating.  Sunday morning I was riding in a state park outside of Monohans, Texas (it's not the end of the world but if you stand on the hood of your car you can see it) when I rode across a patch of loose sand on the roadway.  Before I knew it the front wheel washed out and spit me off, then I landed on my right shoulder.  I was ATTGAT and glad of it.

It will be a few weeks before I'm able to get back on the road again but I just wanted to share this as a reminder to the rest of you to be careful, pay attention to the highway and have fun. ;)

Ouch!!   :o

Sorry to hear about your accident, Mike!  I am relieved to hear your injuries were not life threatening, though!  I sure hope you mend extra-fast and are able to get back out there on the road again during this riding season!

Lemme know if ya need any good pain meds!   ;)

Ouch x2!  Sorry to hear about your injury, Mike!   We all gotta be ever watchful, and ATGATT, too!

I hope it wasn't your 90/6 that you were riding at the time?

I heard today that all it takes 12 lbs to crack a collar bone.  Sorry you got yours in the get off.  Glad you are still among us.

Yikes, Mikes!  Glad it wasn't any worse.  The ribs will be the worst part.  My hubby went through the same thing a few years back and it was the ribs that bothered him the most.

Hope the bike wasn't hurt much - at least you'll have some time to get it back right as well.  It's only gonna get really HOT for the next couple of months anyway.  :P

Gell Well soon!

Oh no!  Bengt Phorgs has a bent wing.  Ouch!! again.  I've had a cracked collar bone (bicycle accident 30 years ago   ::) ) and that was painful enough.  I can't imagine cracked ribs.

I hope you feel better really soon.  It does take awhile for those bones to knit back together.  I'm having sympathy pains right now.  Thinking about this makes my collar bone hurt where it was cracked.

Take it easy on yourselves out there everyone.  I don't want to hear about anymore of this going on.

Ride quickly, ride safely.  Thank goodness for ATGATT!

Sorry to hear about your spill, Mike.  Glad you're going to be OK.  Sounds like ATGATT kept it from being much worse.  Reminds me, again, how dumb these riders are that I see all the time in shorts and tank tops.

Hopefully you'll just be missing the evil hot part of the summer.  Hang in there.

Mike,

Get well soon.  Hope you're comfortable and healing quickly. Things happen quick - don't they?  Relax, get well, GP races on tomorrow morning...be there.

let us know how you're progressing.

Got an email from Mike "Bengt Phorqs" Crenshaw just before Lynn and I hooked out to Austin and Port Aransas. Both in Texas, of course. Lad was looking for some pity strokes after his spill.

And Mike's already requesting home delivery of Shiner Beer and doing the wa-wa-wa that he can't even get much work done on either his Yamaha Trials or BSA 350 shingle. Too many damn bikes in his shop, that boy has!

I have offered his bride, Theresa, our guest bedroom if Mike gets too bitchy. ;D  She's definitely a saint for shagging the truck/trailer and hauling his Beemer home from West Texas. That's a l-o-n-g drive. Bet Mike soothed the pain with a cold Shiner.

Ask him about the Chicken Ranch episode in LaGrange, Texas. I expect he'll claim he don't know nuttin' 'bout nuttin'. Good man.

And Aida; it's only a balmy 98 freakin' degrees at this moment in the DFW Metro Mess. You're right; it will get hot later.

Many thanks for all of the thoughtful words from the good folks on this forum.  Your kind thoughts are all appreciated.  Didn't want or expect any sympathy but I did want to remind everyone that it can happen so fast.  Seems like we've a a lot of road rash going around lately.  Wear your gear and watch the road!

The wing seems to be healing quite nicely although the ribs are my biggest aggravation.  I was thinking of looking into some kind of kevlar vest like football players wear to minimize the effect should it ever happen again.  I guess if I have to be laid up though this is the time to do it.  The weather has been hotter than fish grease the past couple of weeks and no relief in site.  A good time of year to take it easy.

And no, I know nothing about LaGrange or the Chicken Ranch and I can't even drink any Shiner as long as I'm taking these pretty good meds (although that's about over with).   Yes Monte, the lovely Mrs. Phorqs did yeoman's duty in bringing me back home and considering she had a flat tire on her R1100R on the way back she did a fantastic job.  Can't say enough good things about that woman.

So if any of ya'll are passing through Texas give us a call and stop by for a visit.  We'd love to see you.

Mike!  If you need any help give me a yell.  I've had cracked ribs before and the pain is beyond describable when you sneeze or if somebody sits there and trys to make you laugh...

Damn Mike sorry to hear about your crash......do hope that beautiful R90 of yours wasn’t the one that went down. I am one of those who rarely does the all the gear all the time. I am starting to rethink that! In my small town I tend not to wear a helmet on a grocery run .....but wear one on the highway.... often guilty of wearing shorts in town too. Anyway I know it must hurt like Hell. So... so sorry ya went down.

The R90/6 was resting up in the garage.  I was on the 1993 R100GS.  Only damage to the bike was the right front turn signal broke.  Already have the replacement parts ordered and should be in this week.  That's an easy fix.

I seldom ride the GS as was thinking about selling it but wanted one more run on it.  I've decided that after I replace the turn signal I'll put it on the market.  Runs like a champ and I need to thin the herd anyhow.  I've wanted to put a lift in the garage for some time now and need the extra room.  Probably give the R65 forum first shot at it when it's ready to go.

So sorry to read about your misfortune. Best wishes for your quick recovery.

The description of your spill got my attention. I wasn't riding during the years that I lived in El Paso and Southern New Mexico, but I remember the sand that's everywhere in that area. (Used to think that sand is the garnish for the land in that entire part of the country, particularly in the spring sandstorm season.) In retrospect, I'm almost relieved that I didn't have to cope with those conditions. When I bicycled the roads in New Mexico, I used to worry about drifted sand.

The most extreme example of your kind of spill I have observed was at the notorious Delaware Toll station of I-295. Spouse and I were waiting in our car, almost at the southbound toll booths, on a hot day, just after a rain. A guy on a bike in the adjacent lane was standing still, with at least one boot on the ground. ( I think he was double-footing, but I'm not certain.) I wasn't paying particularly close attention until I saw the bike suddenly slide laterally and go down. The rider escaped being pinned under it, though I suspect he was so embarrassed that he wished he had been. I had read about how slippery the pavement is at toll booths, but I never realized the severity of the hazard until then.

Anyway, I'm sorry you're hurt, but relieved that it's all repairable. Hope to hear you're ready to ride again, soon.

John

I hope that your ribs are a little less sore now and that you will be on a bike soon.

On my first longer ride on the WH8LA2 I stopped for gas. After I had filled her up I moved the bike a few yards to park. Stepping off the bike my left foot slid on a bit of spilled oil on the pavement and the bike went down. Very embarrissing! Some kind people helped me rise the toploaded bike and I went to pay for the gasoline.

Guess what happened when I returned and mounted the bike: Yes my foot slipped on the same patch of oil and down went the bike again. Now this was embarrasing!

greetings from a clouded north where summer is due in the next few days

My goodness Mike, I go away to a vintage bike national rally here and come back to find that you and the GS bike fell down!! I am so sorry! Gee, what's with it being the GS bike that slips on sand? I assume all the road bikes would have really fallen down faster then????  :-/

So you have joined the broken collarbone fraternity! Gonna get your requisite lump?? I did find my pretty painful and it did stop me from lifting my right arm up very high...making it very, very difficult to drink in the scenery from that side ;)  If you by chance have arm lifting problems after the pain and ribs are not an issue, try "walking" up the wall with your fingers (itty bitty spider-like) and do it daily...do not go beyond your pain threshold though at any time. It'll get vertical again, I promise!!!  Well, almost!

The ribs are a pain to say the least but I have no aftermath problems from them at all. 6 weeks and all better there although there may be a dent.
So even a perfectly vertical and perpendicular approach angle to the sand patch won't save us???  Just a hope and a prayer situation?

Hope that everyday, you feel better!!

All the best,
Sue
