This just in from John's wife, via Facebook....
------------------------------
Ok, so this is Pattimarie and I just got home from the Greenville Memorial Hospital ER. On his way home from work last nite, John was hit by a Hit & Run driver. He is doing very well... however, he did fracture his right knee cap and his left thumb was dislocated at one joint and shattered. He will be having surgery on his knee this morning (don't know what time yet). He was extremely lucky that there is nothing else wrong.
The car was found a few blocks away from the accident site and we were told at the ER by one of the Highway Patrol Officers that the driver was brought back to the scene by a friend. The guy has been arrested on Felony DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. His bond hearing is this morning at 9:30 - I will be there asking for the highest possible bond available.
I will keep everyone informed of what is going on... I will have the laptop at the hospital when I go back in a couple of hours. So, you can get me via Facebook or email. Plus, my cell # is (xxx) 329-xxxx.
Pattimarie
------------------------------------------
Send me a PM is you're interested in her phone# - don't really want to post it here.

NCSteve has talked to Pattimarie and sent this update....
--------------------------
I've gotten some of your Facebook emails, but the site is blocked here at work, so I haven't been able to respond.
She says John's right knee and left thumb are shattered, and he's already had surgery this morning on the knee. The doctors have said the hand will be trickier, and he will require several pins to get the thumb back together. He also took a hit to the head, but he said other than a few stitches over one eye and a busted lip, he's okay there. Says he never lost consciousness either, and has already asked about his bike, but she hasn't seen it yet to check its' damage. She said one of the 1st things he said when he got out of surgery was, "Guess I won't be getting to Willville for a while, huh?"
So, it sounds like he will be alright, but she was at his job when I called her, working out disability leave and $$$ details, She says he could be out of work for up to 3 months, and will need a good bit of physical therapy. I asked her to call back when she has more details, and hopefully I'll be able to talk to him as well.
More details will follow as they become available, but I wanted to get word out that he's going to be alright. R65.org is also blocked here, so if anyone wants to post there about his accident, please do. Oh, and they did get the guy who hit him and he's being held for felony DWI, hit & run,and a few other charges. Pattimarie said the judge has already set his bond sky high, so looks like he'll be in jail at least until his hearing, probably sometime next week.
See y'all later, and be careful out there!
Steve
----------------------------------------
Ditto on being careful out there, gang!!!

Wishing him the speedest of recoveries from the UK :)

Bet wishes for a speedy recovery ........

Not good news to say the least .
Hopefully John's recovery will be quick .
Just another stark reminder, of the constant hazards that are around us, when we choose to get on two wheels .
-
+1 Bob.I have been there two times.the good thing is that he is alive.
I wish him a speedy recovery
-
Aida, thanks a lot for getting this info out. I've just gotten an email from PattiMarie that says.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
John has had surgery on his right knee and is resting semi-comfortably. He's been moved to room 2418 @ Greenville Memorial Hospital. His right leg needs to stay immobile for the time being. Not sure how long he will have to stay in the hospital.... but I'm thinking that he won't be released any time soon. He's sleeping off the anesthesia and keeps drifting in and out. Thank you everyone for all the well wishes and love being sent out to him. We love you all bunches!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone, please keep them both in your thoughts and prayers.
-
Well, now Pattimarie is on the other end. How long ago was it that the tables were turned and John was taking care of her after her major accident? Just a couple of years, I think. I just hope this doesn't put an end to his/her riding. Although, I would certainly understand if Pattimarie wasn't too thrilled with the idea anymore.
We're keeping both of them in our thoughts and prayers. Thanks for the update, Steve. And keep 'em coming.
-
Will do, although I'm heading to Willville in the morning. I had hoped to get away late this afternoon, but have got a taillight problem I'm trying to fix. For the next couple of days I'll probably stay in touch with them via cell.
Beyond tonight, can I call you with any more details if I get them, and let you post 'em up here? If so, do you still have the same # that begins with 919 and ends with ..48? If not, PM or email me, OK?
And PS: I could be wrong, but I doubt this will put John off riding. He loves it, lives and breathes bikes, been riding all his life, and I can't see him walking away. Or even PM trying to push him: she knows how much it means to him. Hell, he hasn't even owned a car in years!
-
Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery with as little discomfort and pain as humanly possible. DUI's, never ceases to amaze me. Embrace and make the most of every minute of every day folks. It can be taken from us in a split second by no fault of our own.
These people need to start paying for their stupid irresponsible behavior "before" they kill or destroy innocent people and thier families. I'm totally sick of this BS.
That is all.
-
Dang! Hopefully he heals quickly and "gets back on the horse"... I hope they throw the book at the slimeball...
-
Oh my, my, this is very bad news! John is just so much fun and full of enthusiasm when I met him in TN that I am pretty sure this energy will go a long way towards a quick healing timeframe. But dang, it isn't going to be easy. All my blessings to John and Pattimarie. Sure wish I was closer. Please be assured that I am thinking of you both very much!
-
Dang !!!
Our prayers and best wishes for a speedy and full recovery to my buddy John. I also met him finally in person at the Johnsonville TN rally and he is a wonderful, friendly and funny guy in person, as well as on the'net. I hope that PattiMarie hangs in there and doesn't suffer bad memories from this. They are good folks!
-
I was able to talk to John for a few minutes earlier, and other that a scratchy throat, and being obviously drugged up [smiley=Norton.gif], he sounded not too bad. Said he was in the ER until 6:00 this morning before anyone would admit him, and had no rest last night at all. Of course, the 1st thing he wanted to ask about was his bike, and I told him to not worry about it for now, insurance will take care of all that.
He says he'll call back tomorrow, and may try to get on here to do some pecking, so we may hear a few words from the old boy Friday after all. Keep them in your thoughts. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
-
Like Mike, I met John in Johnson City at the National. Hope they lock up the farking bastidge and toss the keys for a long time. All the best for a speedy recovery John. We'll be thinking of you!
-
OMG! :o John! I'm at a loss for words here. All I can say is I wish you a very speedy recovery! I'm so glad your injuries weren't worse. ATGATT for sure and I'm sure that helped you.
Aïda and NC Steve, Thank you so much for getting that information to us.
I haven't actually met John, but we did talk on the phone once. I think it was during the Lima, OH, rally. I couldn't make it out there from California, and he had to work, so I gave him a call and we had our own little phone rally! ;D We had a great talk and laughed alot.
John, we'll be looking forward to hearing from you when you are up to it. Take care buddy!
-
Oh no.... Best wishes for a fast recovery John, though a shattered knee sounds bad.
-
Gosh, thanks SO much for all the good vibes and well wishes from all of you! I really appreciate it more than you know!
I know I have a long road of rehab ahead of me. I just had my first go at using a walker a little while ago, and that was some ordeal! I will have a lot of "challenges" to overcome, but I know I can do it. Riding season may be over for me for this year, but 2011 ain't that far off! ;)
Again, thanks all, for the warm and fuzzies! This is just one reason why this forum is one of the best in motorcycling! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
-
Hang tough John! Keep us informed on your rehab and progress. If you ever visit San Diego, you'll always have a bike to ride.
-
I am very impressed with your spirit...I wish you a great 2011 riding season!!!! Hope they hang the sob.
-
Another set of good wishes from the UK. It happens here too. But our kind hearted judges usually bail them to appear in court later....and often they don't.
-
Hey John!
So glad to hear from you. You're sounding good. The attitude makes the difference, and you do have that. ;) So they have you up already, eh? Good. They do that these days. We grumble, but we do it.
I'm sure we'll hear plenty from you now. You don't have anything else to do, right?. ;D
-
Prayers on the way for John and Pattimarie.
(darn darn darn...)
-
I came looking here this morning for a word about John and I GET John!!!! Woo Hoo..on a walker to boot but I am sure that hurt like....a lot!!!! We are cheering here for you and Pattimarie to get through this ordeal. I only wish you didn't have to get through any of this again.
-
Was very sorry to read the news. I wish you both the best.
Regards,
John
-
I'm so happy to hear from you John and that they've already started you on the walking regimen - that is good news !
Maybe we should make up another flag or something to put on your walker..
-
So sorry to hear about the accident, John, but relieved that you are doing OK and already on the road to recovery. Walkers have two wheels, right? Well you're already on your way!
Hang in there and take it slow and steady. I was looking forward to meeting up with you and NC Steve at Willville this summer, but will move that to next year's schedule. Take care of yourself and keep checking from time to time to let us know how you're progressing. Our thoughts are with you.
John McC

Great to hear John you are up & about & on the road to recovery, great news.
Hope the scumbag gets the full force of the law thrown at him.
As you said mate 2011 is just around the corner & you'll be back in the saddle doing what makes you smile.
John have a speedy speedy recovery.
-
Hi John! You sound so positive! Thank goodness.
I was in surgery for hernia repair when you posted that on Friday. I am just now getting to where I can sit at the computer for more than a few minutes.
This is a crazy business, life, eh?
-
I was sorry to hear about your accident, John, and glad to see that you are optimistic.
I wish you a speedy recovery.
greetings from a sunny north
-
I'm very sorry to hear about the accident. <Shakes head> I know it may be a part and parcel of riding but Hell, it sure doesn't make it any easier. I'm glad that you are up and about.
I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery and I hope they throw the book at the *^$#. [smiley=behead.gif]ing is just too good for the driver.
-
Well, John, at least you have some good drugs to look forward to! Hey, always gotta look for the silver lining...
I hope your knee heals properly and that you are able to get back on two before too long.
-
Got a surprising message from Pattimarie.
Considering how sick SC JJ was yesterday, now she writes:
John is home from the hospital and moving surprisingly well; however, the hallway has gotten much longer to him! He still needs to go see the hand doctor this week and it will be an adjustment on how we do things @ home for awhile but it's good that's he's home! Steve and Allen would you please repost on your pages so that his friends that I don't have will know how he's doing? Thanks much!! Love you all bunches!
Guess he's gonna make it, huh? [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
-
Steve, do you have John's address? I'd like to send him a card. I had his old address, but not the new once since he moved.
If anyone has it, maybe you could PM me so it doesn't get posted online.
Thanks!
-
Yep, Melena, check your PMs. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
-
John what was the set up or circumstances in your collision ?
Was it the usual opposite direction traffic making a left turn in front of you ?
-
Yeah, Bob, that was pretty much the scenario. I was proceeding through the intersection at 35 mph, in the right lane. The idiot was in the left turn lane coming the opposite direction, and just turned in front of me at the last second. I never got to hit my brakes, but tried to swerve. I struck his front bumper and was thrown over the hood of his Mustang, and landed in the road about 15 ft. from the impact. The idiot then drove off, with his front bumper still lodged in my rear fender.
-
That is awful, John, but good for you on being able to swerve and end up going over the hood of the car - I'd rather take my chances on hitting the asphalt than trying to batter my way through the car's sheet metal and glass, even if it is thinner these days.
How is your hand doing? Surgery on that soon?
-
Well, Mike, I had four pins inserted into the thumb Thursday morning, in an effort to piece back together the bone that shattered and resulted in the compound fracture. The doc said he should have a pretty good idea if the procedure is a success in 4-6 weeks after the fracture has had a chance to mend properly.
I just hope I will be able to work a clutch again! ;)
-
NC Steve thought you folks might get a grin out of this pic that my wife took of me this past weekend to post on my facebook page for my relatives to see. Physical therapy started yesterday!
-
John, got any kind of farkles that you can put on that "airhead" you're using? Maybe one of those bicycle bells to excercise your thumb and to let the nurses know to clear the hallway?
All humor aside, do take care and hope that you make a very speedy recovery.
-
Poor John!
You and Patti Marie sure are lucky to have each other!
I was surprised how easily my clutch control came back after my hand injury, and I quit therapy before I should have!
I would say with self-determination and a positive attitude, a fine partner at your side, and the wonderful therapists they have now days,
your chances are very good. [smiley=thumbup.gif]
;)
-
I can see the pain in your face, good buddy. When we met you John in TN there was a mass of smiles and twinkling eyes! They will be back. If they can put Rob and I back together and there is a question if either of us were built to plan (right Rob??!!) hee, hee :D...you got a great chance John!!!
-
I like the way you think, Sue!!! ;D
-
Hey John! I've been on the road the last week so I'm just catching up here. Glad to see you can stand up now. ;)
I was going to get you a post card from Mariposa but I didn't even see any. I'll find one somewhere.
-
Waiting for the weekly John update.... :-/

Waiting for the weekly John update.... :-/
As are all of us...
I'm reminded of the Black Knight sword fight scene in Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail... "Come back. It's merely a flesh wound."
Wishing you a speedy and full recovery, John.

How are you John? Doing better, I hope.

Hey all....
Well, on Monday I had my visit to the hand specialist to check on how my thumb is healing. I got my first look at the thumb, with the three pins sticking out here and there (wild looking, too). He was pleased with the x-rays, and said he will probably take the pins out in 6 weeks so I can begin doing some rehab exercises on it.
Yesterday, I saw the orthopedic surgeon who operated on my knee. I saw the x-rays that showed hollowed out screws inserted in the patella that had wire going through them and pulling the three parts together. (Weird looking, too!) He said the open wound from the "road rash" was healing up nicely, with no skin grafts likely needed in the future. He also wrote orders for my leg brace to have a 40 degree range of motion set when I begin doing bending exercises three times a day, starting on Thursday. (Now, the fun begins!) The best news was hearing that I can begin taking showers! Woo-Hoo!!!! ;D
-
The best news was hearing that I can begin taking showers!
Heh, I bet your better half is even more pumped about that! ;)
Glad you are progressing nicely in your healing process.
-
I agree...Pattimarie is the one for the woo hoo!!! Boy, good to hear the news John. It will be a long process too i guess. So what would have saved the road rash part??
-
Talked to John for a good while earlier. It sounds like he's rehabbing well so far, but he also seems to be a bit housebound, even though he's able to get out, with limitations. Frustrated might be a better term, even though he's in his usual high spirits. It's hard to keep Our Boy down for long!
I'm sure he'd appreciate any PMs and emails from the group here, to brighten up the days [smiley=thumbsup.gif] a bit.
