Title: Bike is finally ready!
Post by: Melena on May 22, 2010, 12:21:11 AM
Yay!  I just got the call at 5:10 this evening that the bike is finished and ready to ride!  Yahooooooooooooo!    [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

It ended up needing both intake and exhaust valves and valve seats on both sides.  He said when he did the test ride that it ran really smooth.  I'll pick it up in the morning and go for a ride!  Yay!

Now I just have to put lots of miles on twisty roads.  What a job, eh?   ;D  That will be easy.  Tomorrow there is a sidecar event somewhere at Lake Berryessa.  We'll go try to find it.

And then Thursday we leave for the 49er Rally.  No highway miles!  I'll have to be easy on her while I break it in.  Lots of different speeds and no really high revs.  I've never broken in a new engine on any kind of vehicle so this will be new to me.

Hey congrats Melena!  :) It's taken awhile to get it back I believe, so take it easy and enjoy the scenery.

Cool!

Did he put new rings in it too?  If so hopefully he broke them in, before and with his test ride.  I'm glad the incident didn't get gunk all through the engine.

Have fun!

Congratulations Melana and may you put a lot of miles on twisty roads on your odometer.

Nothing is nicer than driving a good bike.

greetings from a sunny and windy north

Yes, Ed.  New rings.  Both sides got completely rebuilt.  He sent the heads to a machinist who put it all together and machined everything so it all fits together perfectly.  New rings, new springs, new pushrod seals, new exhaust valves and valve seats, new intake valves and valve seats, new...................well, on and on.  I've got the list.   If you're really interested I'll get it and post it.

The valve went through the piston, so there was some metal where there shouldn't be.  Luckily it didn't damage anything else.  He cleaned out the oil pan (and yes, there was some metal in there) and flushed oil through everything before he put it all together to clean out all the little nooks and crannies the oil goes through. I was able to get a left side head to replace the broken one. There was a guy right in the area that I'd met that had the parts.  Turned out that my mechanic knows him and had already made the arrangements to get it.  Small world, this BMW motorcycling community.

Now I just have to pack my camping gear and a change of clothes so I can leave Thursday morning for the 49er rally.   8-)  It's going to be very cool and maybe a bit rainy the first day out and then warm up.  Makes it hard to decide which riding jacket to wear.  Do I wear the summer one and layer up with an extra inner jacket and rain gear, feel like the abominable snowman with all those clothes and have a comfortable jacket for later in the weekend?  Or do I wear the winter one with liner and and then be too hot later even with the liner out?  Decisions, decisions.   ;D
