Some of the engine bits lent themselves to grit blasting.  I have access to a cabinet at work, and I actually blasted one of the jugs after sealing the bore and passages very carefully with duct tape.  But I was paranoid about getting all the grit out, so I did most of the rest with wire brush, steel wool, various scrapers, and oven cleaner.  I had a Vermont winter to do the job, so it was more a case of dumb persistence rather than any magic technique.
