Title: newbie from Lincolnshire, England
Post by: morristen on October 24, 2009, 10:14:35 AM
Hi all,

I've been lurkin for some time and now its time to come out of the shadows.

I've just returned to biking after a long lay off. In the 80's I always fancied a BM, but with R65 prices about £1000 more than a CX500 I couldnt afford one.

Fast forward to may of this year and I purchased a nicely restored R65LS.  I've since done about 1200 very enjoyable miles on it, mostly in Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire with Squires at Sherburn becoming a frequent stop.

Any tips on my R65 or biking in general would be appreciated. I've just found V2 sponges and also ear plugs, I wouldnt have dreamt of using ear plugs in my earlier days, but they do make a difference.

Thats all for now.

safe biking to all.

Welcome L. P.

Good looking bike .

If this is your first BMW, there's a few personality quirks that go with them .

First is the charging system doesn't do much charging below 3500 rpm, so if you do a lot of slow, or 'city' type riding, battery charge issues may well develop, the red charge light comes on when the bike is at idle, so don't get concerned about it, unless it doesn't go out .

Noisy valves are another common trait, that seems to cause new owners a bit of concern, if properly set, they make a ticking sound .

The transmission makes a fair amount of noise  in neutral, with the engine running .

Really sharp LS. Have yet to see anything from GB that is less that #1 eye candy. Many of us envy the dual front discs.

Welcome to the asylum  [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif]

Welcome

Thats a nice machice you have there. We like pictures especially when they make Monte jealous.

I presume you know that you have a great parts supplier close by. Motobins are in Linconshire.

Hi all,

thanks for the fantastic welcome. Lou and those near me I hope to meet you soon.

The pics I posted earlier of my bike dont really do it justice, it is actually silver and not the white that it looks.

it shows up a bit better in this pic.

Had another good run out on sunday, about 150 miles in total, Scunthorpe, to Thorne, Goole, Wetwang, Tadcaster, Sherburn then back to Scunthorpe.

That all for now.

Safe Riding to all.

That's also a very interesting auto that you have just behind your LS!  What is the story on that?

Welcome to the club!!

You not only have a very nice looking bike but it sounds like you have a lot of fine countryside to enjoy on it. [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif] I'd like to hear more about the bike's history and details like milage and if you don't mind what it cost you. My 1983 has a black exhaust system but your chrome system looks really sharp.

here goes with some info on the bike.

The bike was 1st registered on the 17th September 1982. It was originally Henna red with white wheels.  The last owner restored the bike but went with the silver colour.  The recorded mileage is just over 15000 miles, I belive theis to be incorrect.

I have an agreed value on the bike with the insurance company of £1900.  I have bills to show that over £2300 pounds have been spent on the bike in the last few years.

I have owned the bike since may of this year, in that time I have covered abot 1500 miles. The bike runs very well.

The dealers and previuos owners are as follows.

Motorcycle City, Farnborough - original dealer

Motorcycle City, Gosport - supplying dealer

Heinrich Schaeffer, HMS Dolphin, Gosport - 1st owner

Richard Charles Burt-Andrews, Aldershot - 2nd owner

Andrew Graham bell - West Drayton - 3rd owner

Simon Ashley bell - Shrewsbury - 4th owner

Andrew Graham Bell, Northwood - 5th owner

Peter Colby, Shrewsbury - 6th owner

Brent Wormold, Barston - 7th owner

Andrew lamb, Birmingham - 8th Owner

Colin Paul Turley, Tamworth - 9th owner

Vincent Andrew Turley, Tamworth - 10th owner

Colin Paul Turley, Tamworth _ 11th Owner

and then purchased by myself.

I also have some pre restoration photos, I shall scan these when i get time then post them.

safe Riding to all.

Thanks for taking the time to write up the impressive pedigree of your R65LS. Hopefully you will keep it for a good long time so that it feels settled in :) I'll have to check out the dollar equivalent for the pound, but it sounds like you paid a respectable price for what you have. The milage is low and the bike is real nice. How much more riding do you Brits have before it's too cold?

Welcome LP! With that many previous owners I would just take a peek at the final drive mushroom-shaped filler cap on the top of the final drive and make sure there is a wee gap that shows it has been raised a slight bit to allow the final drive to breath. Otherwise your nice silver wheel in the rear will get oily streaks if you go for a long and hot ride! And you  may panic thinking something else is wrong when it is a simple fix!
This is my usual advice...easy, quick and quite a personal issue! :-[

Lou, You look so wicked sharp in that red union suit I'd skip the leathers. :) It got up to 61 degrees today but it was very windy. There were a few bikes out today but unfortunately I was not able to free up the time to ride.

I dont mind riding in any conditions except wind, living in sight of the pennines we get allot of bad gusts coming down off the hills. I live 1/2 a mile from Pugneys country park and used to wind surf all the time i once broke 3 ribs on a particularly windy day when i was caught in a spindrift nose dived the board and my harness didnt release fortunately i had  my float aid on and some flares or i would have drowned.Ive had major abdominal surgery so sadly windsurfing had to stop.
