Title: New feature - R65 Wiki
Post by: Justin B. on February 23, 2009, 09:18:11 PM
I installed a Wiki application tab.  Hopefully there will be some Wiki experts around here who can help figure it out.  I figure that might be more useful than a bunch of FAQ threads...

Yikes. I've had ZERO luck getting anyone to use this Wiki:

Hi Justin,

I have done some Wikipedia play so will give it a go. I have been (slowly) working on a Wikipedia page for the R65. Would you mind if I put it here as a trial? May take me a week or two yet.

All the best,
Paul

PLC, knock yourself out.  So far I have not found any instructions on how to actually create a page but plenty of info on formatting the page, etc...

As far as the airheads wiki, I looked at it the other day and it seemed rather sparse so that might be why it doesn't get used much.  Hopefully if we are able to get tons of info into this one it will get some use.  I envision it as a huge repository of maintenance/repair/mod info...

Kewl!!  I'd like to have a go at it myself, as soon as we're moved into the new house and the dust has settled!  Maybe by then, someone can give me some pointers on how to go about using it!   ;)

I added a page on the R65 and R65LS, they are both quite brief. The formatting for this wiki is very different to Media Wiki (Wikipedia) software, and the link system seems more challenging.

I was going to take one of the FAQ and try it in there  as I get more info for the R65 page.

All the best,
Paul

Cool!  Thanks, I've started poking about a bit but I have never dealt with a Wiki so I don't have any preconceived expectations...

Can we get a unique domain for the wiki and make it public? Something like wiki.r65.org or r65.org/wiki? I imagine it's a disincentive, as you pointed out, to update a wiki that will not get much attention. I'm not clear on the reasons for the obscure URL, even for this forum. Since I manage many ISPs, administer web servers, etc, feel free to use me as a resource.

Although what you see in the address line of your browser might seem "obscure" it can be accessed through r65.org which seems pretty straightforward to me.  I would have preferred that DNS point directly to r65.org.  The owner of the domain name has not relinquished ownership of it but was willing to redirect it to the suraklyn.com domain.

As far as everything having it's own dedicated URL that is certainly doable as long as someone is willing to register and pay for whatever domain names are used and I'm not really inclined to...  But, I do appreciate the offer of help on the Wiki as I am not even up to the level of "Wiki Rookie"!   Hmmm, would a "Wiki Rookie" be a "Wookie"?  [smiley=ROTFLMAO.gif]

Even with our "obscure address" I think we pop up about number 4 on the first page of a Google search for "r65".

I have e-mailed Noémi Berry for permission to incorporate the bulk of her often cited FAQ into the Wiki.  We'll see what happens...

Justin Morrison,
I've seen your WIKI before and am also a bit dumbfounded at its lack of use. I do remember a raging battle on that more general BMW mail server over Gurus and their right to parse out information based on whim, subscription, purchase of an index and so on. They also have a rather large bunch of articles on their "Club" site. I get the feeling that the assembled here are a bit less Luddite and I suspect a grand WIKI for our Wee M W's will be created here. I really do like the WIKI format and hope to be a a contributor where I can.

Thanks Paul!  I'll bet Justin's email headaches are all gone, now!  ;D

Justin - do you stay in touch with James, regarding the domain name?

It's been about a year since we last communicated.  I wanted to swing by his place on the way down to Ken's.  (didn't happen)

No, Rob, you always seemed to have better luck getting him to respond than I did...
