Title: My R65LS and the Opera House
Post by: plc on February 22, 2009, 01:46:53 AM
Hi All,

I was on the north side of Sydney Harbour the other day with some spare time so took a few shots of my R65LS with some nice scenery. I hope you like them.  They can be seen here:

Best to all,
Paul

P.S. Still curious about my Rocker Covers, they don't seem original to me. They don't have the horizontal fins, and I can't tell if a silver LS should have black or silver ones.

Sweet ride plc.

We seem to be having a plethora of R65LS's lately. Must be coming out of the woodwork.

Cheers

Can't help you much on the valve covers, but can you post a picture of them?  I couldn't make out what they looked like on your harbor pictures.

The bike looked "smashing".

 ;)

plc,
Nice shots. Makes me think we could almost put out a calendar featuring R65's in well known world locations.
As for the covers, the photo was a bit grainy when I enlarged it to have a look. It almost seems like the fins were shaved and then done in black. My LS, which is a bit older '82 has silver tappet covers. It looks like there has been some paint added to yours. black tappet covers, black under the front nacelle, fender & tank pinstriping but as I said mine is a different year model.
All in all looks like it was a nice day by the harbor.

Great photos, Paul!  My wife, who is often a bit cool to my R65, but a big fan of all things Australian, enjoyed them too.  Interesting how similar your white nose pod is to the roof of the Opera House.

From Yikes: << Interesting how similar your white nose pod is to the roof of the Opera House. >>

+1 On that! Did you compose the shot with that in mind?

Thanks for the Opera and the Harbor Bridge shots. Made me nostalgic. Last time I was in Sydney, the Opera was still under construction, and it was hard to tell which activity was more prevalent, the building or the bitching (about the cost overruns). It was impressive then, and it's much more so now. I had never seen the base of the building because it was obscured then with all kinds of scaffolding and construction stuff. The color contrast is striking.

Every time I walk down the hallway in our house, I see on the wall two Cedric Emanuel sketches that a friend gave me when I departed Sydney. One is "The Rocks," with the Harbor Bridge in the background. The other, titled "A Paddington Terrace," is a cityscape of a block of those hillside Victorian row houses that are 12 feet wide and three stories tall. Reminds me a bit of old San Francisco, but more picturesque. (Note to anyone not familiar with Sydney: "The Rocks" is an area near the harbor that formerly had been extremely disreputable, but by the 1970s was restored, gentrified, and populated with expensive restaurants and clubs.) Don't know if the sketches are worth anything, but I really like them. (I find it prudent not to say much around the house about the provenance of the Emanuels, even though I acquired them long before I ceased being single. For that reason I hope the question of their value, or lack thereof, never arises.)

Incidentally, I heard recently that tourists can climb to the top of the Harbor Bridge. I don't think that was permitted when I was there.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the kind words, I was surprised the iPhone camera was so good.  I think the bright day flattered it too.

I will take a more detailed shot of the rocker covers and post them on my site and then link to them.  I will post that question in the Technical Question section though.  I must be a good user now, I have blotted my copybook big time.

My girlfriend (no great fan of the R65LS) also commented on the similarity of the pod fairing and the Opera House.  I think the two compliment each other nicely.  I think however many architects would not like the comparison.

In fact I think the Opera House is the perfect background for the R65LS, it's fairing maligned by many sits right at home with the famous landmark.

It's funny, up close I see all the flaws in my bike, but shots like that make me realise that for a non-restored 25 year old bike it looks pretty good.

Best to all,
Paul

P.S. Yes Altritter the Harbour Bridge Climb is a big tourist attraction and local event too.  I am yet to do it but everybody who does it says it is a great experience.
