Title: Finally got my "dream bike"!
Post by: SCJJR65 on February 11, 2009, 04:57:36 AM
It only took me 5-1/2 years, but yesterday I finally was able to take possession of my "dream bike", my R1200C!  I had located a really primo 1999 R1200C Classic only about 15 miles from where I live, and after exchanging a couple of emails to find out more about it, decided to go over to the guy's house and look at it in person and give it a test ride.  That's all it took, and my wife was able to talk him down $350 while I was out on my test ride!  Do I have a great wife or what?

Anyway, here is my new baby.  Now I have to find some hard bags and engine guards to make her complete.  I guess it's true - Good things come to those who wait!  (And wait, and wait, and wait!)   ;)

John,
Pretty awesome!!
Does your wife get the R65 to ride? I don't see a pillion seat on the 1200 and she deserves some compensation for negotiating the price.
My second bike caused my fiance to ask "You have two bikes now - when do I get to learn how to ride?"  that's why I now have the R65!!

I did buy the R1100R last year -  there is quite a difference between that and the airheads!

Lots of luck with it,
Drew

Good for you, John!!!  :)  I am SO happy for you!

Can I borrow Pattimarie when I go car shopping? ;)

Drew - the backrest folds down, forming a little pillion pad.  I believe there is an additional full size seat that goes on there, as well.

And you are keeping the R65, John?  :-/

What kind of job do you have now?  If I missed the thread, I apolgize.  My congratulations!  New bike, new house... my my...be careful!

JohnBoy gets a new scooter: cool!! 8-)

Now you need to bring that shiny sled up here this Spring and we'll duke it out on the BR Parkway.
Mano e mano, Guzzi vs. Beemer, Italy vs. Germany...

Hmmmm, I wonder if Will knows any Park Rangers we could bribe to look the other way for about 10 minutes?
Or, lacking that, if Aida and Graham would be willing to go our bail after we get popped for racing on Federal land... :P

Yea John!!!  It's beautiful!!!  But, what's that stuff all over your face????

Hope PattiMarie decides to ride with you.  It'd be great to have both of you come up to Willville - and over to TN for the National this year.  Have fun with all the new stuff!!

And a big   CONGRATS!(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi129.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp210%2Fcabcgec%2F36_1_331.gif&hash=357293573cb9ea0c9683ccf4480881ed6f0d02a8)

(Steve,  better yet, I bet Will knows a good road to ride that avoids all those potential problems...hope you don't think we have enough $$ for bail...  :P  )

Congrats John - you have picked up a very nice ride there. I'm sure you'll use it to the max. Are you thinking about getting a seperate pillion pad?

Congratulations!

You've been wanting to get this one for awhile!

But you are keeping the R65, right?   Well, anyway, you are part of this forum now.

Congrats on the bike. Very stylish and comfortable and I'm sure very reliable. Good things come to those who wait!

Congratulations John  [smiley=1drink.gif]

Even though it is bad form to ask about the price, I have to. And I am sure that you have payed less than the cost of an 25 year old delapidated r65 here in Denmark  >:(

May your rides be plenty.

I think I got a pretty good deal, Trolle.  I ended up paying $4250 for the bike, which I think is quite reasonable.  I still have to add bags and engine guards, but I think even after paying for that stuff, I'll still come in a little under what I had originally budgeted for the bike, which was $6,000.

At any rate, I'm a happy camper!!    :D

Excellent, John!  What a deal!

Sweet looking bike.  Congratulations on getting so much for so (relatively) little.

 ;)

You sure did! $6.000 is what an average kept r65 from 1980 will cost here in Denmark. A r1200c from 1998 with 13K on the clock will cost me $22.500!

Hope you have a lot of fun with it, but keep the r65 as you may find the cruiser doesn't satisfy all the "urges" that the r65 might excel at...  I was real close to buying one of the Oilhead RTP bikes a few years ago, I kinda wish I'd done it.  I think they were ex CHP bikes and probably well maintained...

What I've thinking is I probably will want another Airhead again, because it does have that certain charm of a bygone era in motorcyling where it ain't the speed or flash of the ultra-modern bikes, but the "old-school" feel of how motorcycles used to be, kind of like the feel of riding a Royal Enfield Bullet.  The BMW I first lusted after (and still do) was the R65LS, in Henna Red.

I have a strong feeling that I will eventually buy a restored one with low miles on it, and that will be my portal back to a different and simpler feeling of bike riding! ;)

JJ, I've got to admit I've been strugglin' with the thought of taking ol' Britta off your hands, both for myself and The Boy. He's taking a break from school right now and seems a bit adrift, and I can't help but think a few weekends spent riding around the BRP and camping at Willville might do him a world of good. And, I've got to admit I'd still like to have another R65 myself. Question is, where'm I gonna keep it?

Maybe we should kick this around a bit more when I'm down for The Big Show  http://motorcycleshows3-px.rtrk.com/ that's coming up this weekend... :-?

Well, I'm hoping that YOU will be the one to give Britta a good home, Steve!  I'd much rather see her go to someone who understands Airheads in general and the R65 in particular, rather than see her sold to someone who just wants to ride the hell out of her or try to make her into some pseudo Teutonic crotchrocket!  Like all 25 year-old bikes, she needs a little TLC  :-*, but I think she still has at least several more thousand miles in her before anything internal needs to be done on her!
