Title: Sneak preview of £20 paint job
Post by: steve hawkins on January 07, 2009, 04:40:03 AM
Okay,

As a man of my word, I have painted my R100 with the old rustoleum, using a paint brush.  Here is a picture of my progress.  It not completely finished yet as it still needs a bit more buffing rubbing down.  I was just trying the tank for size last night.

I could be riding the bike this weekend - weather permitting.

Brief Report on the £20 paint job:

So there you have it.  I am not going to say it is a perfect job - I would say it currently passes the 6 inch test, but that is only because I am lazy - Monte would do a better job of the finishing, I am sure.

As I still have some work to do, and will probably go back to the 1200 grit, one lazy afternoon in the spring/summer, before polishing up again.  That way I will be able let the paint harden further - although it does not really seem that soft.

Oh, and I was quoted £400 for this paint job - so that £380 in the bank for me and I still have enough paint to do it again another 2 or 3 times! ;)

Paint colours are limited - forget metalics.  Some colours will take more effort to get that perfect finish than others.  Gloss black comes to mind.  But it is attainable with a little effort.

I would not recommend this for you concours R90S, but I would recomend this for your daily rider/hack if you are happy with the non-mettallic issue.  You, can of course, mix the paints, so if the available colours are not quite right, just mix...

Hope this helps

Steve H

Hey hey Steve - looking good my man! You deserve a bit of R&R now  [smiley=1drink.gif]

Seriously - you've done a great job - well done and for 20 quid - well that can't be beaten. And if passes the 6 inch test (and let's face it many men would not.... ;)) then it's a damned sight better than a lot of machines out there.

Oh - and to do it in that small space without having to be a contortionist is also something to be proud of!!

<As Jon Valdez indicated, change direction of the brush stroke on every coat so as not to accentuate brush marks on previous coats.  A good thick layer of paint to allow for the final rubbing down process.> Is this Rob's twin brother?

Well, I did take the bits off first......And I had to wheel out the R65 on occasion so I could get to work on it.

In my dreams I dream of a double garage......and a pool......and some sun!

Thanks for the post Steve.  Your results look very presentable in the photo.

I never would have thought that a brush paint job would be appropriate,  but you have changed my mind.  I'm bookmarking this post, and will be perhaps giving the brush job a try this spring.

Very nice, Steve.

I've always liked a bright color to wake up the cage drivers.

Enjoy!

I guess Rob and I are slow as I didn't see the twin brother thing before it was fixed either, Steve! Anyway, boy, am I impressed with your work! Never did I figure that a brush could do such a great job to pass a 6 inch test...wow! It's that wet colour sanding that must be the trick...I never trust myself to not sand through the coats. Practise, practise!  I have a second R65LS front cowling in a black paint that I got a few years ago. I am thinking of getting it painted to the henna red and having a perfect cowling then take the other one off the bike and getting it painted too. The old one is pretty sandblasted from grime and dust after 88,000 miles. Trouble is getting henna red paint colour.
