Title: Well, it finally happened
Post by: bananapanties on November 08, 2008, 07:54:10 PM
Well folks, who knew that after only 3 weeks on a bike, I'd be caught in the most common single-vehicle accident ever.

I took my husband's bike out and manages to take a caroner too wide, went right off the opposite shoulder, and broke the vertebrae (c-1. c-2 and l-7, and I bruised up my liver and tore up a lung pretty good.  I also have several bruised ribs.

The bike might be totalled--we don't know yet.  I, however, missed a concrete block the size of Texas and an oncoming train, so I'm feeling pretty dang lucky, although I may be waiting to ride for a while.

Yeah, that part where they tell you about following through with your head, they aren't kidding.  I'm pretty worthless at the moment, only able to sit around like alump and take drugs and eat. :)

Heed the advice!  And enjoy and be thankful for your skills!

Annie

You sound awfully chipper for having all that wrong with you!  One smashed finger and I am crying like a baby!

I hope your wounds heal extra-quick! :D[/size]

Oh God, Annie - I'm so sorry to hear that you've had an accident - and not a small one at that.

I truely hope that you are on the mend and that things are OK.... R&R seems to be about the best medicine I would imagine. Please keep us informed of how you're progressing.

Take care

I think it really will be spring before I get a bike....for right now, if I do get a bike, it'll be a little 250 or something...Tom's thinking of buying my BMW for him.

Thanks for the support.  Can you take away some of the pain for me, too?

:)

Oh Jeez, Annie! What can I say, but "sorry and get well." You seem to have a great sense of humor and that'll doubtlessly be a plus in your recuperation.

First Rob, now Annie ... that saying about "Things often come in 3s" comes to mind. Let's all be careful out there.

I am so sorry to hear of yourr accident , Annie !   :'(  It sounds like it was a pretty bad one - I am so grateful to hear that you're on the mend and have such a positive outlook.    I think that all beginning riders generally have an accident of some sort, but after the first one they manage to avoid having any more - so it seems that you didn't fool around and just got that crash out of the way .  I apologize if I am sounding too flippant about it - just trying to make you smile.   I recall my first bike crash - I hit some oil at an intersection going around a corner and ended up low-siding across the road.  Miraculously the bike only suffered some scratches and a bent shift lever.   I (an immortal teenager without much money) was just wearing blue jeans but did have my leather jacket, gloves, and helmet at least. I tore up my knee pretty badly and lost a chunk of skin on my leg, but otherwise was fine.

Well, we also had Sue have a crash a little before Rob did, so I am hoping that this fulfills the "bad things come in 3s" philosophy - my grandma always used to say that, too.

Keep up your spirits, Annie !   Visit us often here and we'll try to give you an excuse to smile.  We'll try not to make you laugh cause
injured ribs hurt  ;)   When you do get back out on a bike, remember the "all the gear, all the time" philosophy, cause we can just never plan these things !

BananaAnnie, I am extremely sorry to hear of your unfortunate accident. We all wish you a speedy and full recovery so that you might return to school and, eventually, get back in the saddle.

While you're sitting around like that lump and eating... careful you don't start chunking up, girl - visit us her at he asylum. We, too, need your counsel.

Hi there Annie, this is Sue, the no. 1 boo boo in our quest for how bad luck seems to come in threes. Seriously, I am so so sorry to hear of your accident. You have cottoned on to the lesson you have learned pretty darn quick... look where you want to go; not where you don't want to go. Me? I have tried to make up something to learn as well from my accident....sleep more!!!! Avoid Prairies when tired!!!! Drink Gatorade even if it is cold outside! Stop every hour for a break! Get a bike that shuts off when horizontal!

Those ribs and injuries are so painful and what about trying to brush your teeth!! Or get off the toilet!! Yow! There are so many everyday moves we all take for granted until we are hurt. I am concerned about your vertabrae injuries and the lung and liver. What does your doctor say? Do you have permission to take Tylenol 3's? I sure hope you do so you can get some sleep. Sleep equals healing! Can you sleep OK? Do you have to sleep sorta sitting up???
I, just this very moment, got a call from the doctors with my last xray results. The collarbone has really started to get calcified now or in other words has got some bone- growing going on now. I know it sounds like a long time but I'm old (er) so it takes longer. That's my excuse anyway. Annie...you are young and I hope will be able to heal a lot quicker than us old farts!!! What ever you do, don't stop being funny and laughing on the inside at least until your ribs can take it!!!

Please keep us all updated on your progress if it isn't too hard to type.
Cheers and all the best!!
Sue

 :o Yowsers!  :o

Steve Hawkins should be counted in the fray as well, that makes four!  Hope there's not 2 more to come!!!

Annie,  you seem to have a wonderful attitude and spirit about all this.  Glad to hear you still talking about getting back up in the saddle.  Sorry you had to learn that lesson about where to look the hard way!  Please keep us up to date on your progress and we'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers as well....(My prayers are getting lengthy these days...)

Starting to think twice about getting back on my bike....

Let me add my best wishes for a speedy recovery. this happened so early in your riding career I hope this does not discourage you.  It really does take time to learn how to ride well.

It seems that in the first year riders make mistakes because they do not know enough and in the second year because they think they do. In my experience the by the third year it does come together. Of course that does not make any excuse for my not turning sharp enough and hitting a concrete mile post with the cylinder of my old R60/2!!!  Now, after taking the MSF course I know about counter-steering and will not let it happen again.

42 years after getting my license I advocate all-the-gear-all-the-time as well as refresher courses in riding technique. I hope to take a track course this spring to improve turning skills.

OK - I'll get off the soapbox and say again - Heal fast and look forward to spring.

When I was learing to ride, my instructor mentioned an interesting statistic.  He said the over 90% of the motorcycle riding accidents happen to people in their first year of riding.  I know that is not much comfort to be part of that statistic, but on the other hand the averages would indicate that you should be good for many years to come.

Hope you heal well and fast, and don't give up riding.

I'm so sorry to hear about your accident and injuries! I can relate to your feelings, for I managed to pin myself under a student bike while taking the MSF Basic Rider Course, and I spent an entire night in the ER, getting X-rays, MRIs and sonograms. I didn't hurt nearly as much as I'm certain you do (from the description of your injuries), but my right leg still looks weird after more than a year, a daily reminder of the mishap. And this was before I even got my license endorsed for motorcycles, and I had not even begun looking for a bike to purchase! (I had ridden scooters and lightweight cycles in high school and college, but had not ridden for several decades until last year.)

You wrote: << for right now, if I do get a bike, it'll be a little 250 or something >>

Hmmm. You didn't mention in your previous postings that your R65 was too tall for you, so I wonder if you would find a 250 to be, otherwise, that much more manageable than an R65. I was considering a 250 when I took the MSF course. Personally, I didn't find the 250 I rode during the course as manageable as my R65. The 250 wasn't that much lighter than my present bike, it wasn't that much slower, it wasn't as stable (IMHO), and it *certainly* wasn't as much fun. First things first: don't fret over this while you're recovering. Decide that you want to ride again, then take your time deciding what to buy.

I wish you a quick recovery.

Best wishes,

John

Annie,

Dawg gone it.  The prayer list keeps getting longer.  As to riding skills and increasing abilities as a rider - I am taking up observed trials riding which involves riding over short obstale courses (usually in the woods) at slow speeds executing tight to impossible turns.  I expect this will improve my handling of street motorcycles.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcycle_trials

Here is a picture of a Montessa 247 that I am probably going to buy-

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.motorbike-search-engine.co.uk%2Fclassic_bikes%2Fmontesa.jpg&hash=781cd5c522afccbfa7e0a4962077a90c7ab6435a)

The one I'm going to get has plastic fenders....

Well, I am impressed Semper !   Most trials riders I recall seeing from my younger days (at least 20 years ago anyhow) were also in their twenties (or younger) and generally quite small in stature.   Certainly if motorcross was on the ticket, the REALLY OLD riders were approaching 28 or so.    Trials riding can certainly be done by the less young, unlike motorcross. I think !

Mike, maybe it's some sort of mid-life crisis thing.  I had given up motorcycles for about 10 years and then all of a sudden had to scratch the itch again.

Annie, it saddens me to hear of your misfortune and I hope you recover fully and quickly.  I usually try to find silver linings in stuff that happens to me (well, when I was younger anyway) so maybe now that you have first-hand knowledge that these things can sneak up and bite you might imbue you with a healthy respect that will keep you alive and in good health until claimed by old age.  My wife had an altercation with a guard rail under circumstances not totally unlike yours the day BEFORE she took her MSF course.  Needless to say she was extremely sore during the training and I got to re-paint her scoot way ahead of schedule!

I remember reading a long time ago (probably when you were just a twinkle...) that most riders had their "crisis" not too long after they convinced themselves they had it all figured out and were the master of the beast.  This quite often happens at high speed with often fatal results.  My crisis only resulted in bent parts and picking gravel out of my thigh and arse for a couple of days and I remember being really sore when I sobered up.

Get up, dust yourself off, and get back on the beast!  At least you don't have good "friends" coming over with all of the funny jokes they can scrounge up in an attempt to make you laugh.  I remember how much that hurts...

I'm not game to read out the forum stories to my wife anymore with al the accidents we've been having lately, (I say we because I share a small part of your pain every time I read about one of you)

I've been off bikes for about 10 years and when I get my speedo back from the instrument shop I'll be on the road again.

Been riding bikes on and off since I was 9 ( I'm now 43) but this will be my first roadbike.
(allright 2nd my first roadbike was a 1966 Kawasaki 90SS I used to ride as a 12-15 year old but it was only ever on dirt)

But anyway what I was going to says is
"We need this run of accidents to stop here and no more please."

I agree Darwin!! My friend Stewart has offered me a chance to ride as often as I want on his TL125 Honda Trials bike on his 50 acre bush property. I think I will be taking him up on it in the Spring as the bike is small; I can go as slow as I want; it will let me know how my balance is coming along; there's no one to impress or watch; LRB won't be shaking in his boots;  it's a bike I have had an interest in for sometime...another friend has one for sale $850.00. I was actually thinking of buying it and this was BEFORE the incident. I have always loved trials. The older bikes suit me as does the style or technical requirements of Trials. But trials has surely changed to the "impossible" with the new Trials bike designs. They pogo over anything!! :oOne I always loved the looks of was the Ossa Mick Andrews Replica..wasn't called that in 1970 though.

I guess all 4 of us have to encourage each other for sure to get back on that horse, pony, donkey.....mini horse.... hmmm.  Like Participaction says "Just do it!"

+1 midlife crisis.  It is red isn't it?   :o

Hi Sue.

I'm not going to pogo over much.  I am doing AHRMA trials which is considerably more sedate than the AMA trials series (which is for the brave and fit young.)  Steep runs into gullies give me the willies (stand on rear brake and try not to plow the front wheel into something.)  I like the OSSAs as well.  I hear they are easy to ride.  The Montessa however is close by and the price is right and it is RED.

Hi Annie,

How is the recovery going?  (Well I trust).

It sounded like she would be riding a 250 next spring.  She wasn't here very long, and if they didn't buy the R65 back from the insurance company, then they may not return.

I have been wondering as well where Annie has gone and how she is recuperating. I was sorta hoping she would get back on that horse with all of us along cheering! Sure hope she is healing well! I think she has an age advantage over some of us here which bodes well for getting back on sooner than later!

You're not 65 Ed!!??? You sure don't look it at all!!! My B'day is coming soon too. Anyway, I am progressing really well, Thanks. The ribs and the clavicle are not a concern unless the snow is heavy and wet. The clavicle started to grow new bone only in the last month or so! I shovel very very carefully! The body sure heals slowly as we age! The brain is clearing but lots of emotional seesaws. I have no patience and get overwhelmed easily. Sometimes I forget things too :( But all in all the fog is lifting as I plan on what bike to get next! I guess there really is a Post Concussive Syndrome...Yuk, another syndrome >:(

But, I do worry about Annie, Rob, Steve and even Chris BC our mechanical wizard from Salmon Arm B.C. broke his ankle in Monument Valley,Mexico and he didn't even know it..until later...what a guy! And to top it all off sadly, we lost Airhead. I sure hope 2009 is better.

Glad to hear that your healing continues, Sue.  But sad to realize that it's taking so long to recover.

I'd pretty much forgotten how much the job of shoveling intruded into our daily lives in the land of the white stuff.  After the boys all grew up and moved away, I remember my Mom deciding to move into the city because of it.  She couldn't put up with the massive drifts and paying someone to plow her driveway.

Keep making progress, and we'll all be looking forward to a GREAT 2009!

Best,

Ed

Took a stab at an email to Annie.

I sent:
All of us are hoping your recovery is going well
We would love to hear from you
Troy

She responded and here is her reply:
Thank you so much for asking!

I'm great, actually, final appointment with the ortho surgeon Monday to make sure the bones healed correctly, and then final two physical therapy appointments next week just to get my own toys to play with at home.  I'm pretty excited, except I have to have hip surgery later in the year.

I appreciate you writing and I'll try to log on to do a general post tonight.

Thanks, Troy, for your efforts in checking up on Annie. Good to know her recovery is going well. Looking forward to hearing from her.

Let's all resolve to redouble our defensive riding skills this coming year. Our village suffered a motorcycle/pickup truck fatality this week... cage driver didn't see the bike.

ood news to hear from Annie. Don't worry, I for one have made changes to my riding thinking...rest, drink, take time completely off riding, get GPS, no need to rush, ride with a friend I like and suits my style as much as possible. I have yet to devise a method for checking personally that I am very alert...maybe a beep sound or a poem to recite? Its never happened before so I don't think it'll happen again IF I follow the above?!
