Title: I got my flashlights!
Post by: montmil on November 14, 2008, 05:22:35 PM
Wow. These rascals are bright. Cool techno-look, too.

Unfortunately, I had to immediately hide them both since one of them is to be a stocking stuffer for my bride's Christmas. That means I can't use mine 'cause she'd get suspicious. So I'm outta light for the next six weeks.

Good job, Justin! I dig 'em.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Got mine, too! Along with a beeeaauuuutiful blue long sleeve t shirt.  Glad I didn't let that one get away.  Graham brought the package to me at work, so he now has already seen his stocking stuffer. I can use mine now.    :P

I got mine too!   [smiley=clap.gif]  The flashlights are really cool.  And what a light!   :o  Bright!  Perfect for looking into the deep recesses of the bike.   ;D  I love them, and so will the recipient of the gift one.   8-)

And I got my new long-sleeved blue t-shirt too.  I love that color.  I will be nice and warm this winter.    [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]  (I haven't seen this smiley used yet.....perfect for here.   ;D  )

Thanks Justin!

Received my light last night and used it to navigate the pitfalls of my back yard while walking the dog.  A great little flashlight that really kicks out a lot of light for being so compact!  A huge improvement to the crumby light it is replacing in my on-board equipment kit.

Thanks once again, Justin for yet another super-cool R65 goody!

All lights and shirts have been shipped so those of you who have not received them yet watch your mailboxes.  I'm glad everybody is pleased with them and they are brighter than any of my other multi-LED flashlights so I'm quite happy.

Aha, Nhmaf, my excuse to visit is in place!! Now the snow just landed here with a vengeance and it's dark at 5:30. Too bad..I could use a light and a warm shirt! Just kidding. While in NH next Spring/summer we/me must see how Mr. Micatech is doing after his run in with the deer.

Yes, I hope that he is doing well, too.    Our wildlife has definitely been more frequently exploring our roadways the past year or so.  Last year, I came VERY close to hitting several (yes, several) deer.  It was raining, dark, wet, and cool, and I was on my concours doing about 50 MPH on a 50 MPH road.  Coming around a corner I saw a female deer standing at the edge of the road on my side, I slowed down but didn't hit the brakes especially hard due to the conditions, I kept my eye on her and my fingers on the brake lever, foot over the rear pedal, in anticipation of her bolting across.   She didn't budge, I started to take a breath just as I noticed movement on the opposite side of the road - 4 more deer were crossing over to her and I was almost on top of them !   I managed to slow down further, sliding the rear tire a bit on the wet road, and ended up miraculously cutting through the gaps in the group of deer while still going about 25MPH before I came to a stop, right side up.  I rode slower and didn't even blink my eyes once for the rest of the 80 mile trip back home !

This year, I've been especially on the lookout for deer, so it was quite surprising to have a bear charge across the road in front of me one evening this summer.
I think that he was more frightened than I was - I've never seen a bear accelerate so quickly after he looked up and saw my headlight dipping toward him.  It wasn't as close of a call as with the deer, but it would have definitely hurt more, I think.  Especially if ol smokey decided that he didn't like my insurance card.
 ;D

Mike, that's something important for everybody to remember - when you see one deer there are more likely than not others close at hand.  I remember my mother got hit by a deer about 50 yards from our driveway.  She saw the first one and came to a complete stop as it ran in front of the car and the other one came across and ran into the left side of the car!  Dumb animal sounds like a good description!

I had the same thing happen to me one winter when I was living in a little "1 general store is all we got" town in Vermont about 10 years ago.   I was driving down our main street at 25 MPH and saw the deer on the side of the road start to run across.    I stopped my car - apparently too quickly for the deer, who ended up skidding all 4 hooves on the snowy road and smacked into the side of my car, leaving a big wet nose print where it nose smacked on my window.   It stood there shaking its head for a few seconds, and then bolted the rest of the way across the road.

How they can be so stupid near our roadways yet so wily and sneaky in the woods when I'm hunting 'em I just don't understand ! :)

Same here, they just seem to disappear come opening morning.  I do remember Ma's car needing to go to the body shop for a dent in the left front fender, though.

Don't have many deer here...but have hit three 'roo's to date - the latest one as I was coming around a bend about a year ago - not more than 2 kms from my home. Man those blighters are sure solid. I was driving my dad's car at the time (oops - sorry dad). Cost me serious money to to rebuild the left side front.

When I lived up north I was travelling down the road at some speed - saw a 'roo at the side of the road bound away - still slowed down though which is just as well because the stupid thing came back out just as I was going past. I hit it a glancing blow at the front of my pride and joy (a 1974 Toyota Celica that I got for my 20th) and it kind of rolled all the way along the side of the car. I stopped only to see it pick itself up and hop away. Meanwhile I had this continuous dent all the way down the side of the car.  >:(

Well here I sit - in my brand spanking new t-shirt. I got home tonight to find a parcel and just dropped everything to get it open - out came the shirt that fits me to a 't' (an amazing event as I seem to have Cro-magnon length arms  :-/) and the torch. Put the batteries in and boy - I concur - that sucker is sure bright! (but just to make sure - I flashed it towards my face (don't ask - but rest assured I'm not always the brightest spark). I saw little stars for the next 30 seconds!

Many thanks Justin - I'll use both with pride.  [smiley=clap.gif]

Cheers
Tim

I think we need to find a place where we can get an R65.org sonic screwdriver !

Sorry, I'm an old Dr. Who fan, of both old and new Dr Who... :D

+1 on the Sonic Screwdriver - Tom Baker rules!

Oh and Justin, you may want to consider - if there is any interest - a Buff. I love my Buff!

You can even get it made up with your organisation's logo...

As far as "doo-doo rags" go, if I'd wanted a Milwaukee farm implement, I would have bought one. [smiley=thumbdown.gif]

Quoting my wife, "We're not going to look like trash." Now if you want to toss in a wife-beater T-shirt, butt crack jeans and several tats...  [smiley=2cents.gif]

From montmil: << if I'd wanted a Milwaukee farm implement, I would have bought one. >>

Because of our international membership, I think it appropriate to add the following:

Monte, remember the USAF term for a B-52 bomber — "BUF"? If that's what you were driving at with the references "Buff," then it kinda fits with your comment above.  ;D ;D  For those not familiar with US Air Force slang, the words that the first two letters of the acronym "BUF" represent are "Big Ugly" Fill in the blank as you see fit.

Far as "doo rag" is concerned, I've always seen it written as "do rag," referring to the bandanna sometimes worn on the head of a male to protect his coiffure, or "do," from being mussed by a helmet (football, military, or cycle) or construction hard hat. (There's a form-fitted stretch version now being sold as a "helmet liner.")

At the former Carswell AFB, the dash 52's were referred to as BUFF's. Big Ugly Fat FU**ERS.

Nowdays, bomber hot sticks fly "The BONE". As in B-ONE.

Remember ol' Slim Pickens riding the big nuke going out the bay of a B-52 in the movie "Dr Strangelove"? A classic. I recall the scene of what was supposedly the shadow of a Buff at low alt over the snowy Russian landscape. Quick eyes will spot the unmistakable outline of a B-17. Oh well...

The videos at their web site show a great deal of clever improvision on how the Buff can be used.  Neat product!

I also remember the USAF "BUFF" from my Air Force days in the early - mid - sixties.  What an aircraft!  The ugliness tended to disappear when you got used to them, but they were always big, (somewhat) fat, Fu**ers.

Finally get to use my new R65 dot org flashlight. Got one for my wife as a Christmas present so had to hide mine and not get caught. She unwrapped hers so now I'm all bright 'n shiny, too.

Happy Christmas, Y'all!     Monte

With a daughter in law school and big tuition bills, you're lucky you're not commuting on an air-cooled skateboard!  ;D

From Montmil: <<With a daughter in law school and big tuition bills, you're lucky you're not commuting on an air-cooled skateboard!>>

This time around, it won't be a totally free ride for her. We're essentially paying her rent, food, and local transportation costs (in Boston!), and she's signing her name on the line for tuition & books. (We hope to help her pay off the loans ASAP after graduation, but her undergrad college costs crimped both our cash flow and our net worth rather severely.) Expensive as it was, I think her undergrad college was perfect for her. For reasons largely beyond her control, she had been something of an outsider all through elementary & secondary school. She got into a college renowned for four years of academic hell (not a military school—founded by Quakers, in fact), and she bonded as tightly with fellow students as if they had been Marines. She's been out of college since 2006, and she still finds some college friends to hang with, wherever she is.

I'm an old hand with air-cooled skateboards, having in the late '60s ridden one of the early ones with hard wood-composition wheels and a primitive suspension one or two evolutionary steps removed from nailing a steel-wheel roller skate to the bottom of a length of 1x12 board. No such thing as carving a turn; just leaned it into a hopefully controllable 8-wheel drift & hoped the wheels would get enough bite to keep the board under me. The technique for hills was simple: Just go straight down the fall line, trying to make the straightest line possible through turns twisties, and praying to avoid any pavement chinks, gravel, or cracks. No helmet, pads, or even sleeves & jeans; most of the time in shorts & t-shirt. My career ended with a really bad case of road rash from a flippity-flop wipeout. (My Army boss thought I was nuts. Guess he was right.) Somewhere in my stuff is a 1967/68 in-motion photo that I should find, scan, and use here as an avatar.

And a Happy New Year to all! In case anyone should needs it, I'll enclose a more-or-less direct quote of a radio host's acknowledgment last week of the sponsor of a program on the Richmond, VA, NPR station:

Brought to you by the Henrico [bail] Bonding Company, in business since 1954, freeing the Irish for 54 years! If you did a little too much celebrating during the holidays, remember that we don't care what they say you did. We're there to help you, or your mother. Hell, even your brother-in-law!  ;D (FWIW, half my ancestors were Scots-Irish in the Shenandoah, so I have standing to joke about my heritage.)

I'm glad she found the Quakers.

As much as I don't care for organized religion, that is one group I will heartily recommend!

She might try a local meeting house for fellowship.

Yeah, I like the Quaker attitude, too. But now she's going to the law school of a university founded by The Society of Jesus!! Go figure. (One side of her double major was philosophy, so I'm sure she knew what she is doing. She's not a bit religious, but she seems to have no problem at all with the priests on the faculty. In fact, she really liked the priest she had as a prof. the first semester.) For my part, I never thought I'd see her in a Jesuit university, but I think it's good for her.

The flashlight Christmas present was a hit!   8-)  He loves it.

It will go in his on-bike tool kit as soon as this wet cold weather turns around to something warmer and less wet.  For now it's in his truck.

At least it's not freezing tonight.  But it's wet and drippy out there.  I hate driving at night in the rain.   :P

One more thing about the r65 flashlight:

After having my light for a few weeks and going thru a coupe of night time "incidents" needing light, I found my new r65 flashlight to be the best light I've ever owned for holding in my mouth while I work with my hands.  It's light, it is a comfortable medium diameter, and has that ridge on the end cap that you can really latch your teeth into.  I can just imagine Justin going through all those flashlights giving them the "teeth test" to find just the right one. ;D

With such short days and more night riding, it's REALLY a must to have a good light!
