Saturday morning, I'll head south to Austin, Texas, to close on my newest R65; a 1983 version. Pics to follow when I get it home. My 1981 model also came from the home of Texas University. It's like some sorta freakin' drug...

So are you gonna high-bar one and low-bar the other?

Monte, Monte.... Way too much time on your hands!
;D

I think monte should look at some of these latest styling concept bikes from BMW for inspiration - here are some pics on the BMWMOA website:
http://www.bmwmoa.org/features/lorider_concept.htm
Some of these chassis styles look like some styles other members have worked on.
While I think it is good that BMW is trying to get some new street cred for making interesting style motorcycles again, I still wish that they'd make one that looked like a "standard" airhead again - I bet a bunch of folks would buy one - if it weren't for the funky economy.

Yea that styling looks familiar, makes me think that someone in BMW has been lookin' over one of our members shoulders. The concept looks nice but there is defiantly something wrong with the styling. Too busy? Awkward? Can't put my finger on it but it all doesn't fit as well as the home brewed custom we've seen built here. Normally I'd say call in the Italians for styling tips but after seeing the new Ducati street fighter I'm not so sure anymore. The Ducati looks more insect than anything else.

Rolled outta Denton at 0530 Saturday morning, headed south to Austin to pick up my new/old 1983 R65. That danged ol' Larry Chabira, aka: SonOfSanford, threw some bait at me and I bit it. You guys ought to see this cat's motorcyle collection... but that's a story for another time. Larry's a pretty cool and laid back guy... But, heh, he lives in Austin, so...
This whole thing started when my wife said, "If I had an R65, we could ride the ranch roads up in Montague County." (That's where we are presently clearing trees to build our retirement home.) Y'all recall that I bought a 50cc scooter for her just last month? Right. But, I gotta appreciate a wife who asks for her own BMW! Larry's call and Lynn's request... Well, it's karma and the planets were aligned.
Mechanically, the bike is 'ab fab'. Needs nothing. After checking fluids and tires pressures - new Dunlops - I ran it up to 80 mph and it was nice. However, after spending some time at Lone Star BMW in Austin, wife Lynn wants the bike repainted in the Azur Blue Metallic she spotted on a 2009 F650GS. The white paint on the new bike is a bit, well, blah and makes the fuel tank look way too big. I need to find the BMW paint codes for the body shop supply guys. A little help here, please?

White ain't right so a euro-look BMW color is the first chore. Also, that re-stitched two-tone seat's gotta go. The visual vibe is so wrong. New front disc rotor is a bonus as are the fresh Dunlops. No lubricant drips anywhere and, yes, I checked... it's not outta lubricants!
I do need to replace the fork seals as one is kinda weepy looking. I'm sure I'll find a few other things that "need" my attention.

Didn't know if I'd like the bar end mirrors but one ride this Sunday morning convinced me. They're staying; I can see something other than my elbows. And the greatest thing is... the center stand has a different geometry than my '81 and it's an easy lift. And this bike shifts so much nicer than the '81.

Well, they do say that white is the most visible/safest color... it certainly seems to stand out in the Texas sun in those photos.
I don't have any paint codes for new bikes, unfortunately, so can't help you there.
At least she didn't ask for it to be Pink !!
;)
Might be the only way to keep you from riding "her" bike ! ;D

How about.... just plain ugly? :-?
Monte - congrats on the new purchase - you've obviously done well and I rather like it in it's 'natural colour' - well apart from the seat....and those white R65 decals on the battery covers are just a tad hard to see.... ;)

Boy, Monte, are things ever working out for you!! I am so pleased that your wife has a new R65. I guess I thought that a scooter was going to be the only choice :-/. I really like that blue on the F650GS too. I got a red one but if and when I get another for a replacement, I might very well choose the blue. LRB might like it better if the new bike doesn't try to compete!

So which bike will be hers and which yours? It looks like this bike has low bars. Is that something the wife will like?
-
Wow, I don't know who did that copper and black paint job on that Beemer pictured in this thread, but i have to say I really like it! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Both are low-bar bikes. I shall endeavor to train her up properly. And until she completes a MSF rider class, she will be confined to her 50cc scooter. See bananpanties tale of woe :'(
Both bikes are great. Guess she'll ride whichever one has more fuel in the tank :D

Interesting to see your wifelings new bike has a set of "LS" pipes. Not easy to come by. That seat has got to go!

My 1981 R65 also has the LS mufflers. I like them a lot... until I see my buddies R100S with the cool, shiny, chrome cans. Hummm... Chrome on one side and black on the other? Naw. Too weird.
The seat will get a color treatment this weekend unless Lynn is correct about possible freezing temps here in North Texas. Justin, bring in your brass monkey!

Despite how it looks, I'll bet that the white saddle is MUCH cooler (temperature wise) to sit on after the bike has been parked all day in the Texas sunshine - it will probably last longer and crack less, too - if that matters at all to you?

All good points. However, the white portion is on the aft area of the seat. I rarely sit that far back unless I'm trouncing some youngster on a rice bike. ;)

Just a comment but my first impression of the white seat from the picture is that the bike looks to have a single seat. This single seat thing is something I really like whether it be done through the addition of cowling, rear luggage racks, a true single seat or sleight of hand!!
-
So you like my seat, eh Sue? ::) ::) ::)
