Hi all.. I am in the process of purchasing a 86 R65. It is silver and runs like a dream.

I had a beautiful 84 R100CS last year, that a friend had to have. So I sold it. I was too clean for me.. I like to ride them and use them..

I have been riding for years, mostly japanese bikes. I ride a V-Strom 650, Rz350 and VFR800 but I felt that I needed a simple bike, no fairing small light and stylish.. I came across an 86 so decided to pull the trigger... It needs a little attention, but nothing serious. I hope to clean it up and enjoy it.

This is a photo from the ad. I'll post some new pics when I actually have the bike.. should be in a couple of days.

If anyone knows where I can get some headlight ears, fork gaitors and a lower bar let me know.

Hey, Gary,

Welcome, it now seems we have monoshockers coming out of the woodwork!  Nice looking scoot.

You can get gaitors from the usual list of on-line sellers (A&S BMW, Chicago BMW, etc.) and you will need a couple of "locating pins" (anti-rattle pins #4 in pic) and 4 clamps.  These pins locate the tops of the gaitors and also provide a passage for them to "breath" through.  What kind of "ears" do you want?

Hi Gary, Welcome aboard.  Good to have another "Mono" in the fold.

Mine was built 5/86 and titled as a 1987 model.  Same silver as yours, but I have the "Touring" cases.  Not as streamlined as yours.  

Keep us posted on your progress and post pictures when you can.

Justin, I don't understand the "pins" "# 4 in picture"??
How do they work?  It looks like a wave washer.

Crap, sorry, #3.  They drive up into existing holes in the lower tree...  It's a dual-shock front end because the monoshockers do not use these parts.

Hi Gary - welcome from a Newbie...VERY nice CS - I'm most jealous [smiley=thumbsup.gif]! Question though - what are the benefits of gaiters? Never had them before.

It the old way of protecting you fork stantions (chrome plating) from stone chips, bugs and grime etc.  Fit a set in time and you will be forgetting about ever changing your fork seals again.

If you already have corroded or stone chipped stantions, then fit them after you have replaced the stantions.

These days people like to see shiny metal - but it is at a cost.  Normally some years down the line though - when I buy the bike >:(.

They protect the polished fork tubes from stone dings and dirt that can, over time, tear or wear the seals and cause a fluid leak.

The "real" gaiters are bellows tubes. I intend to purchase & install them on my bike, as soon as I get one of those "roundtuits" that everyone seems to lack.  ;D  Meanwhile, I'm using the quick-and-dirty wraparound rubber and velcro quickies that A&S Cycle sells for about $18 per pair, plus shipping (price undoubtedly higher now). They are OK as an interim, but they require frequent adjustment and don't cover the entire tube from bottom to top. (Don't be misled by the photo showing the color of the A&S gaiters as red. This is for illustration only; the real color is black.)

Well.. the wait is over.. I got my 86 R65 today.. took it for a little spin, and she runs like a top.. I think we are going to be really good friends. I need to change the bars, these ones are too high. Feels like a Gold Wing.

oddly enough, i just picked up my own '79 r65 on the weekend.....spent the chilly summer fall days up and down rosedale valley, bayview extension and the likes.

Good to meet ya.. By your sig list you are stuck in the 70's, nice and clean BTW  :o.. I'm in the 80's.. I live in East York and on Sunday I was riding the airhead down the Bayview Ext.. Pottery Rd. etc..



I have a fair amount of minor things to do to my bike, rubber this, bezal that..

We should hook up! I wanna see another 65.

When I first took It for a spin I was surprised how much fun this little motor is.. so smooth and revy.. More fun around town than my old R100CS..

Hi again!

Well the cold weather is coming up here in the Great White North. The leaves are on the ground, the pumpkins are smashed and I am waiting for some OEM parts from BMW Toronto and Max BMW. Rubbers need to be replaced, fluids need changing and mods need to be done. While waiting on parts, I took a side on shot of my bike to plan the winters mods. I plan on refreshing the look somewhat, and giving the little beast some much needed attitude. I have mostly paint (powercoat?) in the works as well as low bars and fork gaiters. I have also been reading the thread about the stickers and that is one area that BMW really did not improve the bike. What were they thinking when they abandoned that beautifully designed R65. I am going back. I traced a logo in Adobe Illustrator so I can provide the vector file to a sign maker. I am going to go with BMW blue with a white drop shadow.

Looks good Gary - especially that pic of the RZ !    That is one of the nicest looking ones I've seen in many years !

I wish that I had a nice heated area to work on my bikes during the winter.   My wife wouldn't appreciate it if I built a ramp to ride in/out of our living room though.    I've got an old wood stove out in our barn, but it isn't hooked up to any kind of chimney yet, and I've yet to re-run electricity back to the barn, too.\ (nothing but junk and some pesky chipmunks live in the barn these days).
