Title: Fuel tank purge
Post by: montmil on June 18, 2008, 06:33:58 PM
After running outta gas the other day and barely getting home on reserve, I noticed some crud - that's an actual technical term, you know - in the inline fuel filter. Thought it might be a good idea to clean out the fuel tank and put my worries to rest.

Jury-rigged a fuel drain system where I could both filter and capture the fresh three gallons of petrol I had just poured in the day before. After that was completed, I removed the lower portion of the fuel petcock and expected to find the small filter that is supposed to live in the fuel valve body. Now I know why the PO had installed an in-line filter... nobody home!

Replaced the small in-line filter with a unit that offered more filtering material. Thought that might be a good idea as, for now, it's the only "trap" between the fuel tank and the Bings.

This is all I got out of the fuel tank. A small inspection mirror and a fiber optic light helped me peek into the empty tank's interior. Amazingly clean. I apologize for the poor focus on this pic. Squint and you may see some of the trash still in the filter body.

This is the new filter. Replaced the pricey filtered fuel and was pleased to see no debris in the filter body.

Can you change the filter in this unit,or do you have to replace the whole thing?.

The filter is a sealed unit. Economical enough to simply buy another if/when it looks "dirty".
