Hey, all....
My wife will be going in the hospital on Monday moring for a heart catheterization, in order to check for arterial blockage around her heart. She has been having some difficulty catching her breath recently and saw a cardiologist, who recommended that she take a stress test last week. The results indicated that she does have some artierial blockage around her heart, so they are going to take a look at the arteries around her heart and maybe put in a stent or two to relieve the blockage, which the doctor said she make her feel a lot better. He said this procedure is pretty routine nowaday and that that big a deal anymore, but we're still a little worried anyway. She should only have to stay in the hospital overnight.
I'll let everyone know the outcome sometime on Tuesday. Thanks! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Absolutely, John, we'll be thinking of you both and wishing PM the best.
The doctors are right, this is fairly routine, but that still doesn't make it any easier when it's you or a loved one having the procedure done.
Wondered where you'd been, and now I guess we know...
-
Absolutely Absolutely ! ;)
I am sure that things will go smoothly, but we'll be sending you best wishes and have you in our thoughts anyways !!
Pattimarie has already shown everyone that she is a tough cookie after proving that not even a truck running her over
on her bike can keep her down ! You have a good woman, John - take good care of her !
-
John, I know Pattiemarie will be just fine. Lots of thoughts and prayers headed her way, and yours too.
Take it easy and don't forget to breathe!
-

Your medicine man is telling the truth, John. That may not put your wife's mind, and yours, completely at ease but should help. Yes, it is still an operation involving the heart's function. Been through this with my mother-in-law plus a guy who's good close friend. Both are back up to max rpm.
Will keep a good thought for you and your wife. With her soon-to-be renewed energy, you can be sure she will have many additional chores for you! That's how it works... ;) Monte

It's a scary time ANY time you or a loved one has to have surgery at all. We'll have you on our prayer list. Keep the faith and I know things will turn out just great. Give PattiMarie our best.
-
Hey, dudes and dude-ettes...
Crap.... :-/
Well, I'm here at Greenville Mem. Hospital with my lovely wife, and as it turns out, it's going to be a little more complicated than we both thought. Her cardiologist told us she needs bypass surgery, so she's going to have it done on Thursday morning, or maybe sooner. He says it looks like it will be triple bypass, but thinks that he should be able to take care of all of the blockage. Pattimarie was a little freaked out at first when we got the news (me, too, be be honest) but she's calmed down now.
I'll keep you all posted on what happens from here on, since we have the good fortune of having wi-fi in her hospital room. Sorry I haven't been able to get online before now. It should be easier from here on out, though!
I'll catch ya later. I'm going to steal some of Pattimarie's ginger ale while she's in the restroom. ;)

It's probably laced with a diuretic! Stay strong and supportive for your wife and she'll be the better for it. God bless. Monte

Be strong, and stay optimistic ! Bypass surgeries are very scary-seeming, but there are many, many performed every single day.
I recall when my mother went in for a bypass surgery, they initially told us it would be a 5 hour operation, and that they were going to
do a double bypass. One of the OR nurses came out to me in the waiting room after 3 hours in surgery, and I felt my heart stop, fearing the worst... She said that they were all done and were finishing closing her up and that they had actually performed 4 bypasses ! My mom
was 62 at the time and was otherwise quite healthy. She came back stronger than ever. Do expect her to be feeling miserable for a few days, but she'll grow stronger every day. The scary part is that they'll have her standing up and walking the hallways within 24 hours of the surgery !
We'll be praying for you both.
Mike
-
Bummer! I'd be freaked out, too!
But they do so many of these operations these days and from everyone I've known (no one close to me) that went through it, they felt 100% better after it was all over and done with. Keep smilin' and hang in there. Graham sends his best as I do - and here's a big 'ol hug for you and PatttiMarie...

We'll keep on prayin' for you!

She will be in our prayers. I'm thinking of not reading the forum for a while, waay too much bad news lately... :-/

I talked to JJ a little while ago, and he said PM was "resting uncomfortably", as is to be expected when in the hospital. I think he was enjoying her laptop and the hospital's Wi-Fi internet service! ::)
Anyway, he said her bypass surgery had been moved up to Wednesday now, and that he'd call Wednesday evening after it's all over with an update. I'll report back whatever I hear from him, unless he's posting on his own by then.
So again, even though the surgery is fairly routine these days, it is still serious, so everyone please keep them both in your thoughts, okay? [smiley=thumbup.gif] [smiley=thumbup.gif] [smiley=thumbup.gif]

Thanks for the update Steve. They are in my thoughts always these days.

I'll be thinking of you

Best wishes for a speedy recovery !!
This procedure is getting to be relatively commonplace, but it sure doesn't reduce your anxiety level at all, while it's being done.
My father had double by-pass surgery in 1992, procedure lasted 6 hours, in 2004 he had two valves replaced, and another bypass, only took 3 hours, and they had him up and walking around 36 hours after the surgery, and he was 82 at the time.
Keep us updated on PM's progess !!
-
Thanks, all, for your good vibes and wishes for Pattimarie's speedy recovery! She is going in for the prep process tomorrow at 6:30am, with the operation set to begin around 8:00 or so. We're told that the average time for the operation is about 6 hours, so I hope she'll be out of the OR and in recovery by 2:00pm or so. We both are smart enough to know that the recovery process will be a long and painful one, but we're determined to do it together! Whatever it takes!!
I'll let everyone know how things went by tomorrow evening, OK? Again, thanks! You guys are the best! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
-
Wish her luck from all of us. I'm sure she'll pull through with flying colors, if the past is any indication of her "grit".
-
My prayers and best wishes for a successful procedure and quick recovery for Pattimarie. Be concerned but just to echo the opinion of others it is commonplace today to have bypass. Both my Father and Brother have had it and have gone on to to be curmudgeons for a long time. I guess in all reality I'm just watin' my turn. For now tho I'll go enjoy that pastrami on rye...with kraut..oh swiss and thousand island in the back of the fridge here.

Hang in there!

Oh, John! Please let evrything go just fine for Pattimarie. We have such wonderful friends here on this forum and with all of their good wishes, all life's trials are eased and they just seem to send good vibes to fix all troubles.
Please accept all my best wishes for Pattimaire/s operation to go perfectly. All my love, Sue

Bets wishes to you both from New Zealand! As you say full recovery prob won't be quick but it's nice to have the support of your mates at times like these. Thinking of you. Cheers ;)

Hi all.
I just got an email from John, and he wrote, to quote,
"Just a note to let you know that her surgery was a success! The surgeon in charge said they were able to take care of all three bypasses, and she came through it A-OK. She's in Recovery now and they just got her off the ventilator, and she's breathing on her own. They said hopefully that in another hour or two she will be awake and alert enough for us to go in and talk to her. She will likely be in ICU for tonight and tomorrow night, then get moved back into a regular room. She could be discharged by Tuesday of next week, if there are no complications."
So far so good, and it sounds like everything's gonna be fine.
Let's all still keep them both very close in our thoughts. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

One of the best things about this group is the overwhelming support that flows to anyone in need. That and the uncompromising taste in motorcycles.
Best wishes for Pattimarie from Virginia.

Good wishes from the north too

Glad all went well.
First I knew of the consern with PM is just now.
I have not been here for a few days.

Today, JJ writes...
"As you might expect, yesterday was a very long and stressful one. The surgery was successful, all three bypasses were done, and she was in recovery by 1:00pm. The doctor was hoping to have her extubated by 7:00pm, but because some levels in her blood gases had not reached the level they needed to be at, they left her breathing tube in overnight and kept her on the ventilator. However, they did get her extubated at 8:30 this morning, which was an immense relief! She is talking some in between snoozing and coughing (which the doctors said is good, to keep out any potential pneumonia). They told me that they would get her to sit up on the edge of her bed later this afternoon, and would also start giving her some clear liquids and jello later today as well. And, if everything looks OK tomorrow, she will be transferred out of ICU and back into a regular room! Yay!!! They estimate she might be discharged next Tuesday or Wednesday if things progress as they should in her recovery. So, I'm a happy camper. Sleeping on the floor in the waiting room last night was not very pleasant, but it was worth it, now that Pattimarie is going to be OK..."
So, at this point it sounds like everything is progressing as it should!
John and PM, still thinking of you guys, fo sure... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Thanks for keeping us up to date Steve.
It's good to hear that Pattimarie is doing well through all this.
My thoughts are with you two, John! Don't forget to take care of yourself and get some good sleep. You'll need all the rest you can get so you'll be able to take care of her when she gets home. ;)
-
I just got another mail from John, and it sounds like Pattimarie is healing up nicely. He writes:
"...she might get to go home on Monday! Now, is that good news, or what?
She walked (or shuffled) up and down the halls three times yesterday, which really impressed the nurses who attend to her. She's also doing her breathing treatments every hour, breathing into this tube which floats a little ball when she inhales. She has to do this 10 times every hour, and it kind of wears her out by the time she finishes that last exhale. But it is helping her lung function improve, which is so important after heart surgery.
...Can't wait to get out of this place! Keep your fingers crossed that they do kick her out on Monday!"
Hang in there, guys, it sounds like the worst is nearly over! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
-
Yay! Glad to hear Pattimarie is doing so well! [smiley=clap.gif]
I finally found a card to send her. Gheez it's hard to find a decent card. Most of them are really awful. But I found one that I hope will give her a bit of a laugh.
-
Pattimarie is one tough cookie! Glad to hear she was up and about quickly and is almost heading home! John, take good care of her and yourself as well. Pretty soon you won't be able to keep up with her, I bet!
Thanks for the news updates Steve.
-
Aida,
We got the get well card from you and Graham yesterday, and we wanted to let you know how much we appreciate it!! Wow!!! At first, we didn't recognize the last name or return address, but as soon as she opened it to read the inside and I saw the names, I shouted, "It's from Aida and Graham!" Naturally, she responded with, "Who???" Then, I explained who you were, and then she said she remembered me telling her about you guys from Willville, and said she sure appreciated the kind gesture.
It really brightened up her day!!! Thanks!!! You two are the BEST!!!!! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
John & Pattimarie
-
Glad to brighten her day! So is Pattimarie home and all settled back in? How are you holding up?
-
She's doin' OK, mostly having difficulty adapting to trying to sit and sleep in the bed. (She can't sit on our sofa or easy chair, as they sit too low and she can't get up out of either.) Much more difficult for her to try and scooch herself into place without using her arms (the doctor said no using her arms for 4 weeks, so as not to damage the healing incision on her breastbone that they had to crack open to get to her heart). She's still kind of weak, as one might expect, but she is getting a little better with each day.
As for me, I've settled into becoming the cook, maid, driver, and nurse for the next month. MuShu and Willie, our Shih-Tzu and Pomeranian, can sense that PM is not well, and have given her a wide berth and are staying out of her way, which is good.
But being at home is a helluva lot better than being at the hospital, I can say that for sure! ;)
-
Glad to hear Pattimarie is back from the hospital John.
Our prayers are with you two.
Now (for a change) you can start taking better care of Pattiemarie than you have Britta.
;)
Best,
Ed
-
Yeah, but crap... She'll cost almost as much to take care of as Britta! ::)
-
Glad she's home and recovering John. It's better for you too as you're nearer to a fridge full of "cold ones". ;D
-
Crikey! More healing prayers...
